Well, in Australia I've heard a couple of cases of long songs making it
onto the radio (commercial radio, I should say) - I heard "November Rain" a
few times (how long was that, anyway? Back then, before my prog days, i
would have considered a six minute song an epic) and all of "Shine on You
Crazy Diamond".
Just thought I'd mention that it has been done, so nothing is impossible.
Well, almost nothing. I have still yet to receive widespread praise for a
particular Princess Diana joke I heard last week, but I'll give it time...

I went to one of the sites to see the album cover and I printed it out just to see how it would look. I remember people saying the Majesty symbol isn't on there anywhere, but I think I found it. Look at the very bottom in the black part, dead center. It is very faintly there. I didn't even notice it until i printed it on my printer. but anyway, I just thought i would let you know.

I'm starting to dislike Labrie a lot. Much more after his very unkind attitude with me (Cassiano and Alexandre were there witnessing the fact). I think that he is suffering from what we call in Portuguese "estrelismo". He wants to be a star, he doesn't care what he has to do to become more famous. He is a complete dumb ass that doesn't know that fans can get sad when he says things he's not supposed to say.
Ok, down to the facts: after we talked to the very, very cool, humble Myung, Derek and Petrucci (man, how this man is loveable! He is really incredible as a person, pays attention to all his fans -- maybe he, Myung and Portnoy are the reason Dream Theater are so big), we tried to talk to LaBrie and I started something like this:
"Hi, James. We're from the Ytsejam international mailing list and we'd like to ask you some questions..."
He promptly replied:
"I can't understand your language!"
He turned his back on me and went to talk to other people. Now, tell me this is educated.
And to everyone that has the "Lost in the Sky" boot, you may pay attention to the time where Dream Theater finish playing a song (I don't remember which one it was) and the italian fans were saying something. James promptly replied again: "I can't understand anything that you're saying" (I don't remember the words exactly, but it is something like what I put there). After that, you can hear the silence of the crowd, who, obviously, weren't prepared for such an unpolished treatment.

These two King's X albums are very different. I have long considered Dogman pretty much a Doug Pinnick (bassist and vocalist) CD. He sings lead vocals on most of these tracks. Dogman has a heavy feel to it, particularly on the title track. However, it also contains some really beautiful slower tracks like "Cigarettes" and "Flies and Blue Skies". Not their best album, but still a very solid effort by these guys.
Now, by comparison, Ear Candy is more of a group oriented CD. All three members have at least one song that they sing lead vocals on (I love Jerry Gaskill (drummer) on "American Cheese (Jerry's Pianto)). All of the songs have a much more psychodelic feel to them. This is definitely a headphone CD...you will miss a lot of little nuances if you try to listen this without a really good stereo. This album also returns the band to more of their gorgeous vocal harmonies that led me to become a huge fan around the time they released Faith Hope Love ("Life Going By" is a great example of this).
Last week, I received my copy of Ty Tabor's (King's X guitarist / vocalist) recent solo release, Naomi's Solar Pumpkin. This was self produced, and self-distributed via the King's X official web site. Again, this is not prog...but Ty comes up with quite a few really good songs (Had to Move and Hollow Eyes immediately come to mind), and his guitar playing is still exceptional. Most of the songs sound like King's X songs that maybe didn't quite fit the past few albums. Ty is currently in negotiations to have this CD released and distributed by an actual record label. In the meantime, his limited run of NSP CD's are going fast. The only complaint that I have about this CD is it's length (less than 50 minutes). Anyone who claims they are a King's X fan should own this CD!

When I heard that Doug Pinnick was going to be doing guest vocals on Lines in the Sand, I was doing backflips. After hearing the new version (MP3), however, I wish that they would have given him some actual lead vocals rather than just an occasional background vocal. I still like what Doug offered, but it's not what I was expecting. Wouldn't you love to hear Doug doing Moanjam with the guys in DT!!

The DEBUT album of Tiles is due soon? So what the hell is standing amongst my CDs since 1994?????? ;-) Comparisons with Dream Theater? (Sigh) Sometimes I think whenever someone doesn't know how to describe a prog metal band he claims it's like Dream Theater.... IMO Tiles actually do not sound like Dream Theater at all, indeed they are a Rush-clone. But a real good one, I think. (But who knows, maybe the newest Tiles CD "Fence the Clear" CAN be compared to Dream Theater rather than to Rush? I haven't heard it so far.
