i read that here and on the tony levin webpage, and i came all over myself.

peter gabriel is on lucky bastard to have a guy like tony levin playing bass.
it's funny that in the age of billy sheehan, tony can still outplay him (and
always will). he's one of those guys (along with chris squire and doug
wimbish) whose bass tone i can tell virtually anytime i hear it.

to hear that a lineup like petrucci, poRNtoy, levin and rudress is getting
together for even a coffee break makes me salivate. i can envision myself
getting more exicited about this than fii, but due to its tentative-ness, i
    can deal.

wow. that made my day (whoever posted that info, you the man).

    Subject: My FII review
    Message-ID: <199709131617.MAA27505@ruby.cs.brandeis.edu>

Well, I guess I'll post my review of FII for now... its more of a
feel for the songs than an overall review, especially since all that I
have heard are MP3's of the songs (well, MP3s of everything but TAMP,
since I have not gotten that yet to put on my mirror site), so while
these are pretty high qyality MP3s, they still are lossy
    compressed...

First off, I don't know what everyone was complaining about with the
new CD... I think its another incredible piece of work.... yes, it
is different than WDADU, I&W, Awake, and ACoS, but thats what I want,
if I wanted the same songs over and over again, I would not be
    listening to DT...

New Millenium has a real proggy feel to it, some cool keyboards etc

You Not Me is the one htat I think the most people have heard. While
it is more pop driven, it still is DT, I don't think it is a weakness
to the CD, however, and shows that diversity

Peruvian Skies is as of now, is by quite a bit, is my favorite song on
the CD. All of the instrumentation are there, its a really heavy fast
pasted song, possibly the heaviest track on the CD, however, in a
proggy way, more like Pull Me Under is on I&W than Lie is on Awake (to
me, Lie is more of a metal track, and I end up skipping it about 75%
of the time I listen to Awake). This will be a moshing song at
concerts. I'd also love to see them follow this by PMU on the tour as
they did on the Fix tour, I think that they blend in together well.
My one question will be is, is Venessa, the main, ahh... character,
of this song someone real, or made up for the song... the song is
basically (in a quick non-analytical sense) about a very bad
    relationship(s) between her and another...

Hollow Years is again different than anything that DT has ever done.
Its a slow track, very accoustical, but something is different than
Silent Man, this is another track that really could get good radio
play, IMO. An interesting contrast, placing this after Peruvian
Skies, really shows that DT is a diverse band (sorta like the feel you
get by having TSM followed by Mirrir/Lie). There are some really cool
accoustic guitar parts on this song, although I am not sure if it is
    guitar, or some other instrument.

Burning My Soul has remained close to the version from the Fix tour,
without Hell's Kitchen in the middle. It is one of the heavier
tracks, maybe as heavy as Peruvian Skies. A good track, that however,
does not stand out in any way (not to say it is bad, but it doesn't
really stand out). There are some cool double bass drums in the
beginning, though. There are some cool vocal harmonies (is that the
    right word) in the here.

Hell's Kitchen is a great instrumental, in the same way that all of
DT's instrumentals. Again, not changed much from the Fix tour, but
seperate. Starts out slow, and really progresses into a faster track,
a very nice transition from BMS to LitS, I think that these 3 tracks
should stay together when played in concert, b/c they really do flow
well, or at least HK and LitS, b/c they flow perfectly, if there was
no break between the tracks, it would be as good as the from from
    Erotomania into Voices.

Lines In The Sand is another great track, also not changed too much
from the Fix tour, however I was quite shocked the first time I
listened when Doug Pinnick came in, I knew someone else did vocals in
the track, but it really startled me... This track is maybe my 2nd
favorite. Another quick proggy track, although I guess just the
length of the song gave that away... :)

Take Away My Pain: I am in disagreement, I guess, with many people
here, in that I think that I really liked the version that they did on
the Fix tour. I think it lost some of its impact as far as been a
deeply personal song when they turned it into a more, hmm, Carribean
(I am sure that that is spelled incorrectly) track. The new version
is good, but I think the one from the tour was better, and I'd love it
if they released it as a B-side some time down the line...

Just Let Me Breathe: I did like this song from the Fix tour, but now
that I cna understand the lyrics, I almost have to start laughing
every time I hear it... It really is a strong cut against the music
industry... I'd love to see some eMpTyV exec's reaction to this song
if we could somehow force them to play the video... :)

Anna Lee: I have not listened to this track enough to formulate a
good opinion, however it is a good song. This really doesn;t sound
like a DT at all... I am trying to think of what band, but this
sounds much more like one of their main influeces band, then DT
    themselves...

Trial Of Tears is another long song, the longest of the CD. Again, a
good prog song, trying to figure the lyrics...

Overall, I think that this is another winner here, and also a CD that
could get some real air play if Elektra/EastWest/whoever they are not
got off their ass and did some promotion. There are too many songs
here that are radio friendly (and DT fan friendly) for it to fail in
    getting radio time.

Anyway, this post ended up being far longer than I had first planned,
so I am going to end it now...

    Hey all.,

I called KSJO while I was stuck in BART-strike related traffic and asked the dj to play the new DT single. He said "You want to hear it huh?" , I said "YEAH, I've heard it's out but haven't heard it yet" (Lie :) ). Four songs later it came on. After the song the dj said that was the first time he had heard it, he seemed to like it. Said he had gotten a few requests for it. It came on at about 4:30 p.m. That's the quickest a request I have made has gotten on the air. Anyways, it sounded AWESOME!!!! Much better than the .ra file. I think we will really dig this album.

They have two CD=B4s : * Tiles * Fence the Clear Both are on Standing Pavement Records. The first CD has a strong influence from Rush, specially the style of the guitar player that can be compared to Alex Lifeson in some cuts. They have an instrumental song where you can find many Rush influences (Presto). The second release is a little bit different than the first. Fence the Clear show a small influence of DT in some cuts, but the whole CD is good IMHO.

Well the only difference I can see between the radio version of YNM and the album version is that the mixing is much better on the album version. The radio version is all snare HH and bass. You can hear everything much better in the album version. I still don' know where the extra 20 seconds comes from. The album version of Hell's Kitchen is sped up and so is a few seconds shorter and about a half-step higher, but I didn't notice that with YNM. Anybody else know where the extra 20 is? maybe the repeated outro is longer.

I got the feeling you got turned off by the video and not the music which is weird to me. But, just to show everyone that Savatage puts some meaning in its videos check this out. I got it from the Savatage list...

[Side note: I've never saw a video and liked the song. It's not because it's MTV or anything it's just that I watch the video more closely, than listen to the song.]

Okay, everyone sign up for the progressive tape swap, already! You only got till the 23rd!

Also, thanks for the 3 or is it 4 jammers who are going to help out with emailing radio stations, and stuff like that. It's sad that there are more people from outside the jam that are willing to give up a minute or two a day, so that more people could hear DT. Our current number of people is 11. So, if you want to help out, please email me or Ernesto. We're not asking for you guys to cut off you're toes or anything, just help out with requesting DT in an origanized way.

For those who are subscribed to one of the other four official DT fanclubs... There is *no* need to join The Official International Fanclub, just to get the special x-mas surprise. According to the Dutch Theater of Dreams fanzine (great job, Denis Schoen and co.) the band is working on a project that isn't exclusive to just the UK fanclub, but all five official fanclubs (around x-mas). That's all they could say about it.

    Those five fanclubs are :

    1. Images And Words (UK) 2. Theater Of Dreams (Dutch) 3. The Mirror (Germany) 4. Carpe Diem ! (Japan) 5. Your Majesty (France)

I've included subscription info for all *five* of these fanclubs, on "Under A Cyber Moon". If you're only interested in the Theater Of Dreams info (Dutch), check out Itchy's Dream Theater Homepage, at http://www.prognosis.com/itchy/indexdt.htm

    Hi Jammers!

I just came back from MP's workshop, here in Sao Paulo. Do I need to say it was AMAZING?! Man, the guy kicks ass! And more, he's a lotta funny! Here's what happened:

I arrived at the place at about 10:40 am (the workshop would star at 12:30). I was too tired because of last night's show, but, yes, I woke up 9:00 o'clock in the morning! :-) The gates were opened at 12:30 and we got in. When MP was announced he came and sat on the drums. He hit the cymbal one time and got out of the stage... hehe.. that was funny. Well, correct me if I'm wrong, but that's what I remember: when he came back he started playing a solo, and, from this solo he started playing "6:00". Then, he talked a little bit (with that ridiculous interpreter that didn't understand about music in any way). He played two new songs, with the guitar, bass, keyboard and vocal parts in the background: "New Millennium" and "You Not Me". The second one you all may know (as I already did) but the first one I didn't and I can tell you: that's DT! It is a really cool song! Between that he explained his technics for playing his odd time signatures, he played some parts of Metropolis to demonstrate what he was saying. And he did a lot of funny things: talked like Beavis and Butt-head, asked the crowd to sing the guitar and keyboard parts while he was playing Metropolis and more. At the end the audience asked him some questions, including one about Metropolis part II: he said they got it ready, but it is too long (25 minutes) and they do not know when they are releasing it (I dunno if it is new for ya'). To finish, he played "Erotomania". Well, I think I'm being too long, but I have one more thing to say, and that's not good: as MP had to get hi flight to Rio de Janeiro for their concert there. He was in a real hurry. But the guys from Modern Drummer Brazil (that's was organizing the event) said he would autograph and take photos with everyone (About 200 people). The guys told us to sit down so each one would get an autograph and etc. BUT, everyone got up and went to MP just like animals. I, as the dumb ass that I am, sat down, and, of course, I didn't get my autograph neither my picture with him. He had to go away to get his flight. Well, I'd like to say the guys at Modern Drummer sucks and I'm not buying any magazine from them anymore... (hehe, just kidding)... At least I got a lot of pictures from MP. You'll see it in a week or two in my Home Page at: http://www.geocities.com/Broadway/3551

    That's it.

Nevermind my earlier post as it appears that all mp3's are sped up ~10 seconds depending on their length. The album as a whole is extremely well done and there is not one dud on the whole thing. early faves are LitS, TAMP, and ToT.

Anna Lee, while being a cheesy power ballad would be one of my favorites, but a certain young lady by the same name just left me for a different college so I can't listen to it :( Least favorites so far (they're still not bad, just not as good at the moment) are PS and YNM.

Hollow Years really surprised me. Very unlike previous DT, but isn't the whole album that way? HY would also be in the early faves category, but the whole "lets repeat the same thing over and over to fill up another minute at the end" strategy isn't very cool. The lack of any fade-outs is a definite bonus as I've always thought the only reason for a fade out is the inability to write a coda. We already went there though. There's definitely something here for everybody. It is not therefore possible for anyone to say that the whole album sucks, unless you're a country or rap fan :) JLMB is very heavy and aggressive and is really cool right now, but as ppl have already been saying, it will date very quickly. To a point it's dated already as Cobain and Hoon are old news as it is.

In other news, JP's rendition of Purple Rain is one of the better JP jams I've heard.

Well, decided to put my theory on FII to the test... one of my friend's girlfriend was in town this weekend, and we all ended up going out, so I took my copy of FII with me to play in the car... got a pretty good reaction overall, from non prog fans, in particular, as I mentioned in an earlier post today, Hollow Years got a very good reaction from the group... I really do think that this CD could be the break that DT needs for overall popularity, as well as being good for us, the existing fan base... I do really think that Hollow Years needs to be one of the planned release from FII.

In terms of radio friendly tracks (not counting time restraints):

You Not Me Hollow Years Take Away My Pain Anna Lee Just Let ME Breathe Burning My Soul Trial Of Tears New Millenium Lines In The Sand Hell's Kitchen Peruvian Skies

This is not, however, my order of evaluation... I still think Peruvian Skies is my favorite... Of course, this order could never happen... I could just see a radio station playing something like Trial of Tears, or even New Millennium... never would get an 8 min track on radio...

Now here's something I never expected:

I was listening to the ASU vs Miami game here in beautiful Mesa Arizona and during a game break, but just before the commercials, they played about 15 seconds of.....

    Pull Me Under

Wow...They won't play DT on the radio here in Phoenix but AM radio plays their stuff during a football game.....

BTW - Any Spiral Architect fans out in Ytseland? Just curious..Anybody wanna gimme a review?

I just ordered Conception's Flow Cd to get me thru the next week and a half. Hope it's as good as everybody says it is.

    'nuff said
