To followup on my previous 7W (seven wonders) cd post, I've had a chance to listen to a bit of it. The only one of the 7 CD's I currently own is Subconcious, so that was the only one I was able to compare quality of the MP3 with the original. There is a little loss in quality, but not too significant, and I have a nice speaker system connected to my computer so I can pick up the differences a bit easier. On lesser speakers, you might not even be able to tell the difference.
IMHO, it was a job well done Ryan! Mind Control came out really well, and I've been jamming to those tunes for a bit :). So to repeat what someone else just said, thanks for the efforts to provide this Ryan! And thanks for even making it possible Bahr!

Wow, thanks. =) I try to have a paid disc out the door at *most* the day after I receive the money. So far I've kept up with that pace. There might be a slight gap soon because I only have around 20 liners left, and I just ordered 100 more liners today. It takes a week for the printer to make the liners, so if I run out before then, don't worry, it will cause at most a 2 or 3 day delay in getting your order.
Anyway, the CD he's talking about is "Seven Wonders" (obviously). It's a disc containing all of Mike Bahr's past Dream Theater bootlegs (and as a bonus, Mind Control). I gotta say, this was a waste of $32. :) It's an OK boot, but it sure the hell wasn't worth the asking price. I have yet to see it in any other catalogs, though.
First the essentials. I'll have scans of the packaging on my page tomorrow. The cover is the DT Awake Postcard, the back cover is the picture of the guys from inside Awake (yet without their names on it) and it has the tracks labeled and such in a very web-page-y sort of way, almost like a box of laundry detergent. Overall the packaging just says to me one thing: "Cheese attempting to be classy". Using the Awake postcard was classy; it looks _cool_. Using that www.wisk.com layout wasn't cool. It looks dumb. And since the spine only says "Dream Theater", Melissa is gonna have fits trying to find TTR for cloning when I'm out running errands and orders come in. :)
The sound. Well, how do I put this? It's not as good as Mind Control or A Kick Into a Dream, so it's not an essential Awake tour bootleg. However, it _is_ FM/soundboard, and it _is_ clear, and it _does_ sound good. I guess it wouldn't be bad for $20 or so (heh) although I really wish that had been the original buying price. It sounds better than the scores of IAW audience boots out there.
The boot is made by KTS... Knit The Socks. In Malaysia. Or so the packaging says. The ad said KTS and I assumed Kiss the Stone like everyone else did... pretty blatant rip there. The disc itself is a painted CDR, probably a gold/gold generic, since the bottom surface _is_ gold. It seems an awful lot like a US release. There is no detail anywhere on the boot about its contents, other than the track listing and KTS blurb. No mention of source, though I know from James saying "Hi Denver, we always like to come up here and breathe your thin air, and now I'm out of breath" that it is Mammoth Center, Denver, CO, 11/22/94. The painted image on the CDR itself is the Awake postcard design.
The tracklisting is the standard Awake tour setlist minus Caught in a Web, Another Day, and the encore Metropolis. It's...
1. Pull Me Under 8.27 2. 6:00 5.53 (written out as "Six O'-Clock") 3. Take The Time w/extended outro 13.13 4. Lifting Shadows off a Dream 9.25 (Awake Heavy Jam is present but not mentioned on the label) 5. The Mirror/Lie 15.43 (A Crack In The Mirror is present as "A Crack") 6. Erotomania/Voices/Silent Man (sic) 20.38 (I half expected it to be labeled "A Mind Beside Itself").
It clocks in at 73:19, so we got about as much as we really could have out of a single-CD release. The bottom line? For the DT boot collector on a budget it's a good grab, for the heavy collector who already has MC and AKIAD it's the next boot to get from the Awake tour, for the completist it's of course mandatory, and for the "best-of" collector or audiophile, it probably won't make you happy. I've already added it to the replica boot list, which will be updated tomorrow.

I have "Yes Story" and it spans the aeons from when they started right up to "Big Generator", it should help you to decide what period you'd like to come in at - or - you might just want to get hold of all of it (er...that would...rock). As for the "Is JLB a wanker?" question - I have never met him - but I would have to say... probably not. He may well have a bit of an attitude (who wouldn't in his position - in fact I'm amazed that any successful musician hasn't). But at least he's not completely up his own arse like alot of the bigger stars (Jackson, most rap stars, the Artist formally known as Prick etc...). I don't think that the rest of the band would put up with him if he was that bad - they seem such a nice bunch of guys - why would they tolerate it? just my 2p's worth... WFS is one of the most beautiful pieces of music that DT has ever composed (IMHO). I replay the track over and over before hitting LTL which is a great track as well. But just one question...Why is it that for the three versions I have heard on bootlegs, it is never played as it was on the CD? It's always an acoustic guitar version. I would love to hear it live as it was on I&W, does anyone know why DT chooses to play it in the different style? Is it some kind of revenge on Kevin Moore for leaving the band ;) *Joking* But seriously, if anyone knows why they chose to change the song, please clue me in.

I knew this year would finally have a boombastic end.... And you know, the best part of this year just started yesterday, when I went to my local record store here in Hannover, Germany to buy the new Savatage! Wow! It's really great. A bit tougher and straighter than Dead Winter Dead, which is my personal Sava CD of all time. The wake ... has this spirit of pirates, Bounty and stormy seas thing. You know, I liked the atmospehre of DWD much more, cause I'm more into the balladesk side of Savatage, but on the new one, they ROCK! Just listen to the 8 minutes 'The Hourglass', which calls a 72 tracks recording its own...
But that's just nothing when it comes to my enthusiasm about Dream Theater. Hell, I'm feeeling like I small kid waiting for birthday and christmas gifts all in one day!
So, gotta listen to Savatage to prevent me from calculating the hours and minutes to wait for FII.

Hello everyone, I'm coming out of lurker mode once again to praise Ryan Whitaker's MP3 CD "Seven Wonders." I have been a member of the Jam for only about six months now, so I missed out on all of the Mike Bahr CDs. Ryan's CD was a godsend and it now is one of the best CDs I own. The sound quality is excellent, but the thing that jumps out at you right from the get-go is the packaging. Ryan did an excellent job with the booklet, with track lists of all the songs and similar comments about each CD like Mike does on his website. Great job Ryan. And, of course, thanks to Mike Bahr for making the CDs in the first place.

Well, I know that your comment was just you kidding, but do you really think that the Black Album would have sold that much if it were not released in due time? I think that part of its success was the perfect timing, giving people things that they had never heard (I mean, the mainstream). And I really appreciate it.
