I just read this in the FW newsgroup.

    > Hi everyone
    >
    > I have a buddy who owns a prog metal store here in
    > dallas, and he received a call from his Metal Blade connection
    > last night with the news that Fates will be opening for DT
    > on their upcoming US Tour... Just thought y'all might be
    > interested... Sorry if this is old news to y'all.

Anyone else hear about this?! Damn I hope this is true..mainly cuz I
know that FATES will be playing a lot better venues (remember the Lodown
    fiasco...what a nightmare!)

Although it should be DT opening for FATES.

    cheers,
      Carlo (aka Fates)

Just interested in knowing how many guitar players there are on this list. Seems like most subscribers are keyboard or bass players. What do you guys think of Petrucci's guitar style? I think on Awake he finally discovered his own unique guitar style (on Images and Words he sounded like a combination of his influences). However it is a little hard not to think of Alex Lifeson when someone plays those suspended open string chords.

    See ya,

Well, those versions seem to be recorded while they were still looking for KevMo's replacement, because there are zero keyboards in there. I don't think they've played WFS on stage since Kev left (I could be wrong). In any case, they play with piano on LiT, only that at the end the whole band comes in, but other than that, it's pretty fauithful to the original (actually a lot better, IMO there's a lot more emotion coming through.

    >For those who want to read a fairly short review of FII goto: >http://www.westnet.com/consumable/1997/09.15/revdream.html

I went to read that review, and something that was said there by DT caught my attention: The stuff on I&W was written over ten years ago. Wow, has it been that long? I recommend everybody to read that review, it's pretty cool.

    >Is it just me, or does the intro to ANM remind you of >the theme music to a PBS "science & technology" show? ;)

You know, now that you mention it, it actually does:)

    >The only thing that I don't like about Spock's Beard is their choice of >words on the first album. One song is called FU and contains the word >"fuck" about 10-12 times. This bugs me (even though the vocal melody by >which it is sung and music is great). I hate to hear prog groups use words

I know what you mean, but I really don't mind that if its used the right way. In that song, he's letting out frustations...the kind that make you go 'Fuck You' to the rest of the world. And it seems to me thats the best way of evoking that. All i know, is that when i listen to that song (including the 'I'm Sorry' part) it makes me think of all those times i've hurt somebody I've cared about by not controlling my frustrations.

Another perfect example, is (yet again i bring up that band known as,) Tool's 'Ænema'. I don't know if you've heard it, but it says 'fuck' a considerate amount of times. And you know what? If you remove that word from the song, you lose the whole point. This song i can relate to myself, because i've often thought to myself: 'God, this world sucks. I can't stand it. I wish it'd all go away'. And that song just evokes those feelings impressively.

To summarize, I agree with you that using cuss words all the time is stupid, but sometimes, 'fuck' is the only word that'll truly express what you feel. And there's nothing wrong with using a word used in everyday language...as long as you use it at the right time.

Or just read what it says on the sticker on my 'The Light' CD:

Warning: This CD containd the F#$% word. If you are offended by this, you are very sad, and should not buy this fine CD.

    :))

Besides, this goes for real life too. I generally don't cuss much (no, really:) ) but sometimes, when something really gets too me, i just let it out. And I don't think there's anybody that doesn't do that every once in a while. No one is above cuss words:)

I'd really like to know in what context James said that. It just seems odd to me he'd just say, " By the way, Angra only played 7 or 8 times in France, but DT sells more records than them" That doesn't make any sense. Could the person who originally posted that explain the whole thing a little bit better?

    Hey all,

well the broadcast of FII on 94.1 WJJO was cool, and I managed to get everything on minidisc, so I now have my advance copy. Too bad there was a thunderstorm which gave me some static during Anna Lee, but this should tide me over until the 23rd!

Maybe with all of the support DT is getting in this area (WJJO & WMJB) they will decide to come to Madison on their tour. I can dream can't I?

Can somebody post a list of where on FII JM uses a stick?

I think the cover of an album is one of the most intergal parts of the ALBUM itself. When one picks up a good album, the entirety of it as a whole are going to lead toward a certain theme, and I am not just talking about concept albums, though I might later. A good album is made up of numerous parts, the music, the lyrics, the production, the booklet, etc. But the cover is the coup de grace. With a good cover everything is brought into focus and the true essence can be, in a sense seen in the album in addition to being heard.

I have listened to (am listening to) the entirety of the album, and my feelings on it are positive, but I am not writing about that here. What I am going to try to do is explain why I feel the cover is perfect for it.

What we have here is the shot, through a pair of binoculars, looking out at a pair of men on stands in the ocean. Firstly we have a picture of the ocean, something that has been around longer than anything else and that will be around longer than everything else. The sea is infinite, it is Infinity.

Next notice and think about the viewpoint that we, as the person looking through the binoculars, are in. If you notice, we are lower than the other two, we are sinking lower than the two other fellows. We are falling into the ocean. Falling Into Infinity.

Now that was just the title, next we should move onto the chosen lettering and placement of the Majesty symbol. If you really take a look at the lettering of Dream Theater you wil notice that except for the fact that there are crossbars witin the A's that what we are looking at is a "fuzzy" version of the old lettering. Which fits into what happens when you look through binoculars. When you look through binoculars things exactly within your field of vision are perfectly clear, but as you move out from the center things get "fuzzier." And anything not within the viewing radius cannot be seen, and only can be filled in by your mind.

Continuing along the same lines I would like to comment on the album briefly. This is a new Dream Theater album, remember the NEW part. They are doing alot of stuff with this album, all of which is only pushing them further and further in their musical repoitoires. WDADU was made for anyone to listen to, they needed anyone to listen. But also they new that they were in a sense doing it just for themselves, so they did what they wanted to, not what they thought would sell, focusing on the songs only. I&W moved to focusing on the music, and developing an audiance (IW is still the album that brings the most people into DT). Awake was for the fans, it was giving us what we wanted to hear. We said to ourselves, "this is what DT is all about man." And they knew it. DT was a feeling, a sound, etc. in our minds and this solidified it. FII is an album returning to WDADU in a sense. It is what they want to do now, it is focused on the songs again, and whether or not it SOUNDS like Awake or IW doesn't matter. We will hear it and it will get into our minds and we will know it is DT, whether the sound is the same or not.

How does this relate? Well the DT logo is "fuzzy" and the Majesty symbol is out of our viewing radius for a specific reason, to let our minds do the work. DT has always been "the thinking man's music (prog at least)" and this is a symbol of this fact. They don't have to say "Hey were DT, this is what we sound like, watch us, listen to us, we're cool!" They just know that we and the new people will hear it and just KNOW it is DT and love it and take it into our hearts and minds like we have for all the other albums.

In their own words: "Close your eyes, you can find all you need in your mind."

One last comment focussing on "Just Let Me Breathe." They parody themselves by reversing the above statement, "find all you need in your eyes," I think it is. They just want to make sure that you know that they can parody themselves, but can parody you if you think for some odd reason the "sold out." (Shane physically restrains himself from going off on the whole idea of "selling out.")

Take it easy, and everyone have some fun on the 23rd!!!!

    -Shane

Like many 'Jammers before me, I applied for a college radio show. WMUC, University of Maryland, College Park's very own waste of space on the airways - symphonies of industrial noise, the worst punk bands known to man, and third-rate punk-ska bands straight from the garage to you, 24-7.

(Can you tell I didn't get the job?)

Anyhow, I applied for a prog/progmetal show, figuring, hey, college radio's about diversity, right? I checked out the webpage and found they didn't have any shows of the sort, and I figured it to be a good sign. Wrong. Here's the reply I just got.

    >hi there, > >some of you may have already gotten my informative message, but this one >is on a slightly different topic. each of you applied for FM slots, but >for the most part, alluded that you would do AM or FM. anyway, each of >you had music preferences a bit out of our range, but if you are >interested in doing a shift on AM despite the differences in music, you >would be welcome to interview for a slot. > >another option is to train as a sub and fill in every now and then, which >would still give you some radio experience, and be helpful if you ever >want to reapply for FM. > >my office hrs for THIS WEEK: > wednesday: 4-6 > thursday: 2-5 > >please let me know if you're interested, or if you have any questions. >rachel > > <>><<>><<>><<>><<>><<>><<>><<>><<>><<>><<>><<>><>><<<> > Rachel A. "...music preferences a bit out of our range..." That's the part that pisses me off the most. It's a f'n free-form radio station! The point is that there's *NO* format! Well, I can think of one word to describe these high-and-mighty-jocks and it rhymes with shipocrytes... I can think of a lot of words to describe 'em, actually.

Anyhow, I'm thinking about doing the sub position, but I'd like to toss the question out to the 'Jam community as a whole. What do you kids think I should do?

AM is a structured top-40 type station, btw.

Without knowing the people there, it's hard to say. But if I had received a message like that, I would have gone right back to the station and ask them how they can call themselves a "free form" radio station, yet target only a certain market. However, you can't be rude to them, or you could kiss any chance of getting in goodbye.

I'd basically go in there an try to make a case for progressive music, and show them that you are dead serious about it (I just don't like "no" for an answer). Maybe (just maybe) they would consider you if they knew you were serious about it and know your progressive music well, instead of just some guy who wants to headbang on their radio station.

Of course, it may make no difference at all (closed minds). In that case, if you want the experience and can stand the alternative (pun intended :), take the sub job. At least you might be able to sneek a song in here and there.

well, it's hard to see on the pix (on the net) right now, but if you have either 1)gotten the album (*grin*), 2) printed it out or 2) gotten the postcard, you can see the faint image of a majesty logo in the bottom center of the picture. Hi, Whenever there's a thread slagging JLB I always think - stay out of it, don't encourage it etc... - but I can't. He seems quite open and honest about DT's push to become more popular, commercial even, and he's not afraid to admit that they want to grab a slice of the Floyd/Rush market. Do some of you jammers think that, perhaps, he is spearheading their "more commercial" direction? Just a thought on why some people may not like him at the moment. I have only heard YNM so far (and that's the way I want it to stay - I want that "whole new CD to look forward to" feel when I finally get it). If YNM is the most commercial on the CD - I can't wait - I know I'm gonna love it! Whoever was raving about "Where are you Now" not making the cut - I can't believe it either. I finally got to hear "Eve" and "To Live Forever" - I must say that TLF may well be my fave DT song ever...er...it rocks..! Was there a 2973 Jam? - if so I didn't get it. Dave (a UK Jammer).
