Hi there, if you want the lyrics for FII drop me an e-mail and I send you. Now I have FII... I really like MP's lyrics for JLMB, especially the lines about Nirvana and Blind Melon: "The big machines take care of you Until you kill yourself And then the sales go through the roof Calculated, formulated Feed my head with simple thoughts And let me breathe instead of being taught All bottled up and tearing at the seams I'm bored Just let me breathe A daily dose of eMpTyV Will flush your mind right down the drain Shannon Hoon and Kurt Cobain Make yourself a household name" I would be glad for people who can put the lyrics on their web page... Cheers, Bungle

Interesting how opinions will differ on something like this. From a pure lead standpoint, I think that JP's playing on Awake was a step down from IaW. (Only one step down from my favorite album of all time is still pretty fucking good, though). Certainly, there are high points on Awake, like the end of IF, the insane quintuplet section in Erotomania, the solos to lie. However, there are a few spots on the album that I just don't get. To this day, I still cringe when I hear the solo to Voices. Again, I think it's funny becauseI've seen other people call this their favorite JP solo of all time. But to me, the tone is totally inapropriate, and the solo itself just wanders aimlessly. The phrasing is totally straightforward, and there's not a single note that makes you sit up and say "woah, that is not what I expected". There are other spots like this on Awake, as well. IaW, on the other hand, seems to me to be much more melodic. This is true in general, but especially when it comes to lead guitar. Petrucci makes that guitar sing on Another Day, PMU, and especially the mind blowing instrumental section to LTL. LTL is a good example of what I like about his playing, because there's really no shredding to speak of. But every note is *perfect*. Not that shredding cant' be beautiful and melodic; it's just that I think there's a time and a place for it, and I like fast playing that accents a good melody. To me, this is what's missing from most of Awake. I am, of course, speaking in simplified terms for the sake of argument. I don't actually usually separate guitar playing into "shred" and "melody" in my mind. To me, they should, in a manner of speaking, be one in the same. But this is what I feel is missing from Awake. Again, this is just my opinion, and I already know that ALOT of people on this list feel exactly the opposite. I'd be interested to hear what exactly it is that people like so much about JP's lead on Awake, though. I might as well toss out a few of my favorite JP moments while I'm at it. Besides the ones I've mentioned, I love the solo to Surrounded, Under a Glass Moon, and especially, that wonderfully bluesy little thing he does at the end of TLF on LIT. Man, was he ever cooking on that. OK, I've talked about nothing for long enough. -Clark

For those that have heard both songs, which would have rather seen on album? Personally, Where Are You Now fits better than Anna Lee, although both are catchy. AL sounds too much like the beatles and James voice is worth having Where Are You Know on the album. Take the time.

I read this quote in Carl Sagan's book "A Demon Haunted World" last night. The only reason I didn't stand up and start cheering is cause I was working in the computer lab at the time. I think this quote really expresses what I've been feeling for quite a while. In most cases I think ppl are too closed-minded, but in many cases I think there are a bunch of brains falling out. Just something to think about. Incidentally, this whole book is amazingly interesting and raises some very cool questions, especially about mainstream society and what people will do to be popular. I don't want to give examples cause I'm sure a bunch of people on here smoke, etc. (oops I just gave an example) <grin>

I brought this subject up a while back and nobody wanted to discuss so I'll discuss it now. I agree very much with this. All the uneducated bands need to use swear words cause they can't think of anything else to say. DT on the other hand has a very good grasp on the language and therefore need not say such things. I'm not being a square either cause I just got rocked in my racketball game this morning and I was spouting fairly well, but my spouting wasn't being immortalized on a cd either (at least I hope not :) yet another "something to think about."

In a word, it's "AWESOME". Instead of lugging my bag of CDs to work every day, I can just take along this wonderous creation. The sound is great, even through my computer speakers. I had 6 of the disks already, but it's soooo cool to have them all together.

It can never be again... I will NEVER see Fates and Dream Theater on the same night. That could cause a rift in the space time continuum. This was destined to be my fate, ever since the Awake tour when IME opened at the show I attended (and were quite good), but I found out that Fates was filling that slot immediately AFTER the Chicago venue! I am being punished by God, and because of this, none of you will see Fates open for Dream Theater on the upcoming tour. My apologies.

I dunno. I think it's this album where he really shows his own style. Awake was sort of "Getting there".... he didn't sound like anyone else (with a few exceptions) but he didn't sound very unique either. The solos I've heard on FII are what officially seperate him from the realm of guitar wankmanship. He's gettin' damn good.... :)

I think this whole load of crap about JLB being a jerk is all just that... crap. When I met him, he was really nice, and anyone I know who's met him has had a similar experience. It's only these people who I've never met who seem to have these "negative encounters", and really I'm not prepared to believe these few accounts over my own experience and the experiences my friends have relayed on to me. The same goes for Geoff Tate and a whole bunch of other amazing players that seem to get badmouthed by some of the people on this list.

    >From: Shane Liebling <jusenkyo@uclink4.berkeley.edu>

    >I think the cover of an album is one of the most intergal parts of the >ALBUM itself.

I couldn't agree less. :) I think the cover is a piece of paper, with little value, except for pictures of the band's gear, notes, and maybe lyrics, if some of them seem to say things like "Death is the first dancing turtle" until you have the sheet to tell you what's really being said. The cover art can be a cool bonus, but it'd be a fool who would complain if the greatest album ever were released with just a white cover that said "Fates Warning" (or insert YOUR favorite band here) and had no graphics. It IS the music that means everything. If you lose the case to your copy of Images and Words, does that mean it's not the same great album? Every time someone complains about the cover art to an album, I want to vomit. But I guess in the Ytsejam Tradition, there has to be SOMETHING to complain about. In fact, I'm sort of complaining about someone complaining about an album cover! I hope you don't take this too seriously... I'm just disagreeing with ya, Shane. I am not in a position to tell you "You're wrong"... I just don't see eye to eye with you.

I don't have any problem with that at all. As long as they're making the music they want to make, and not making it just for the money, then I say "go for it".... in the Dr_Mosh way, I will decide for myself if the band sucks, and let the band do what they want. All the complaints in the world will never change the direction of an intelligent band like Dream Theater. If they're happy with the music they're making, then I hope they just keep on making it! I'm sure most of you agree (though I'm sure there will be a slew of fucking Ytsemorons who write to the jam saying "Dream Theater SUCKS!!! They SOLD OUT! I hate this!" as if any of us give a shitmorsel!)

You know what? I think that the next steps I'll do to obtain the "Lie" single will be stealing and killing... I'm really a dumb ass. I should have asked Petrucci to play "To Live Forever" on the new tour (how many of you think this is one of the best songs Dream Theater has composed?).

I'd really love to see an official video from each tour (I've already said this on this list, when I subscribed, but let's repeat this again) or even a live album containing this marvelous, terrific, awesome, incredible, unbelievable, breathtaking song.

Ok. Now and unrelated topic: I think that I'll start an Opeth homepage (can you say I like them? :-) ). First, I'll ask Mr. Akerfeldt if I can put some samples on my homepage and then I'll inform you of what I have done. I think that I'll need to learn some new HTML commands (talking about putting something available, D-Man, have I sent you the caseliner program for Linux??)
