I asked Mikey Bahr not too long ago if this was a project he had planned. But seeing as how he was in California at the time, he missed the Arizona show. I think that with his track record, someone could be real cool and give him their copy of the show to make a bootleg with. Chances are, it will turn out real good and the show WAS great! I just wish I was a DAT-Recording guru, because the Detroit show was great for the fans and the band...they played 4 encores! So, if anyone does have the show on DAT, please take the time and consider the options for creating a boot that I am sure everyone would appreciate.

I agree with Jasom Something on his comment on "The Gathering"... Very emotional, very sensitive, very melodic indeed... I prefer "Mandylion" to "Nighttime Birds" but I agree that you should give both albums some time to get on you... My brother did not like them at all when he first heard it, but now he fery into it... I saw them two times live, and it was great... No show, but only the music... I can really recommend them, but the music needs some time I think...

Hi all
Yesterday I picked up the new album by Vanden Plas, and while I was in the shop, I also bought the last album by Orphanage. CD dealers are bastards (rich bastards, at that).
Vanden Plas - The God Thing
Without doubt one of the best releases this year, and for me the best release by a German band since Superior released Behind. The album opens with an instrumental, Fire Blossom, which gives you a good idea of what to expect. The violin and cello are very nice. Then comes 'Rainmaker' which is my favourite. A wonderful guitar intro before all sorts of wild shit starts happening. This could be the mini-version of the long-awaited 'Metropolis Part 2'. The whole album has an 'Images And Words' feel about it, but it isn't a copy, every track is very clearly Vanden Plas. Other highlights include 'You Fly', which is balls and chunk pure with quiet piano interludes. Then there is the obligatory ballad, 'Crown Of Thorns', which gets a bit harder after the violin and cello break in the middle. The last track, "Combien De Larmes', is a French version of their song 'How Many Tears', and is obviously a tribute to their French fans - a nice touch. This album is simply excellent and a must for anybody who likes Dream Theater. Stephan Lill's guitar work is spot on. This has to be 10/10.
Orphanage - By Time Alone
Orphanage are a Dutch gothic band, but they play gothic music with a difference. I am almost tempted to call it prog gothic. Like most gothic stuff, the album is dark, often heavy, and sometimes sombre, sometimes fast. But there are plenty of breaks, chops and rhythm changes in a lot of the tracks. It sometimes reminds me of Meshuggah a little. The band have two singers, one male who is responsible for the grunts and screams (Cradle Of Filth meets Elend) and a female with a very clear voice. The band also make extensive use of backing vocals, which are provided by the so-called Monkey Spank Choir. Anybody who likes bands like Theatre Of Tragedy, Within Temptation and The Gathering can't go wrong if they buy this album. Again 10/10.
We should be grateful that the English language has such a versatile word as fuck. You can use it in so many ways that it has become the Swiss army penknife of swearing. Compare "oh dear, it's broken" with "fuck me, the fucking fucker's fucking fucked, fuck it". See what I mean? Lengthen the 'f' and it almost sounds ejaculatory. Let bands use it if they want - much better than all those lyrics about elfs and goblins in my humble, fucking opinion.

Quite different from DT. They are an atmospheric metal band with a female vocalist (awesome Anneke Van Giersbergen). Their album "Mandylion" is one of the best in its genre! They are influenced by Pink Floyd a bit. I highly recommend them !!

Does anybody know?

I totally agree, Damon. It's all I've been listening to for the last 3 or 4 days (had to borrow a friend's copy, gotta get my own!). I too, as a keyboard player, am always looking for heavy-keyboard laden stuff. I find that Jordan's sound reminds me a lot of Vince DiCola (another player here everyone should check out). He scored the Transformers:The Movie soundtrack (hey, don't laugh!), and I'd classify it as progressive hard rock, very cool.

Well, I've heard a lot about Cairo, a Magna Carta band, they seem pretty cool (from what I've heard of the sound clips). I've heard some bad reviews, but it's usually that there's too much keyboard, so you and I would probably like it. Also, did I mention Vince DiCola? :)

Following up on the guitar messages, I think Petrucci is immensely talented and the albums so far haven't showcased just how knowledgable he is in music theory. If any of you have seen his instructional videos you'll know what I'm talking about. As far as his guitar style goes, his rhythm playing sounds like a combination of Hetfield/Lifeson, while his leads are his own style but remind me a little of Carlos Santana (don't know why? Dorian anyone?)
Someone here said that they prefer his leads on Images, I agree on that one but I don't think he had his own style. I don't think that sounding like someone is all that bad, as long as the people they're copying are awesome and it's not all they do.
By the way, does anyone here actually know many albums DT sell world wide?

Just wanted to say hello to the fellow Ytsejammers out there! My name is Leonard Berkoski, and I work at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD. This isn't my first time on the list, having discovered the Ytsejam right around the time Awake was released, but I unsubscribed after ACOS was released and just came back a few weeks ago.
I first discovered Dream Theater when in college, when a friend of mine who also loved Rush, Queensryche, and Pink Floyd approached me with this amazing song called Metropolis by you know who. Needless to say, that album stayed in my CD player for an entire summer, and I've collected many additional CDs including some by Mr. Bahr. (And naturally, all of my close friends are hardcore DT fans now; if you happen to go to a Baltimore Ravens game tailgate and hear ACOS played in it's entirety, it's probably us - Boy we get funny looks!)
Some thoughts on the upcoming album: am I nervous about this one! I've listened to about 5 of the songs from various web sites, but I haven't been able to discern enough about the songs due to the poor quality of my machine/speakers. I'm really trying to hold off on judging the new DT album until I can hide with it for a few days in a dark room. As to the other albums released this past year or so, I've been disappointed by Rush's 'Test for Echo' and Queensryche's 'HINTF', although I seem to be one of the few that really like the new Metallica album. The only album that has lived up to my expectations so far has been Fates Warning's 'A Pleasant Shade of Grey'; wow is that album amazing.
By the way, for the other few people in the Baltimore/Washington area, where is DT going to play this time? Hammerjack's is gone, and I don't see them fitting real well with one of the outdoor pavillion type of places.

Well, I'm very curious to know this also. And I couldn't decipher all the things he was saying on this boot during the pauses.

We have word - the festival (called Powermad 97 - no, I don't know who chose it) is on the last weekend of Nov. - 28, 29, 30. So far, the only bands that I know for sure are playing are: Psyco Drama The Quiet Room Divine Regale Mystic Force Gothic Knights Wyzards

Please, Eric!!! I've finally been able to stop going to therapy over WAYN's absence on FII! Another great tune along with RTK, Metro II and others. It'll be interesting to see how well FII sells? I predict very well! Can you say "Another release soon"? :)
Having said that, I haven't heard Anna Lee yet :) It could be much better than WAYN for me...
