I don't have their CD, but they are on tour. I just saw them
last tuesday night. It was in a local bar . . . not many people
there, maybe 40 if you count the bartenders, waiters, and sound
people. I think there were some Magna Carta people there too, since
Magna Carta is based around here (Rochester, NY). Anyway, I don't
really know what to say about their music, since it was the first
time I've ever heard them. Alls I can say is that they sound like
they're described: Norwegian Folk Celtic Rock. With an electric
Violin (or fiddle or whatever) and a double neck electric Mandolin in
the band, you can see where they would sound like folk rock.
         I don't know what to say . . . I guess I enjoyed the music . . .
something different. But they were definately talented, I can say
that. Oh well, I may have to order one of their albums sometime.

To Parmet and anybody else wondering-
Metropolis is by a German director named Fritz Lang who
made the movie in 1926 and subsequently had it hacked to absolute
pieces by American "editors" (what they called psychopaths back then)
and it was released with TWO HOURS cut in the U.S.
anyway- you can still get it now at video stores (sometimes)
in a slightly different version that was put together by producer/composer
Giorgio Moroder- it has a rock sound track and has a lot of frames actually
tinted, as Lang had indicated was originally an intent of his.
Anyway- the point is- Metropolis is actually the name of the city
that the rich people live in - while the working class- the slaves-
toil endlessly in the depths to keep the city running for those elite few.
The robot, who has no official name, but was dubbed "the Maria robot"
as it eventually takes on the likeness of a girl named Maria- was the
basis for C-3PO and a host of other "robot" movies.
Incidentally, the movie is being restructured at a museum in Germany who
have tried to re-create many of the lost scenes, since after being cut, the
    prints
were badly burned, through old out-takes and still photographs.

Check it out- it's worth it.
But there are too versions out there- beware- personally, I prefer the
    newer
1984 remaster- but if you get a chance to see the original (shorter) B&W
    version
    do it!

Sorry if this is too long

    Hey fellow jammers,

Listening to FII right now, although I have had a three song promo for about
a week and a half now. My only opinion of it is......brilliant!

The production is excellent, I can hear JM, and it's a total band effort. I
think every open-minded DT fan is going to dig it.

I also think the boys have a hit on their hands with YNM. Any song that
stays in my head for a week non-stop.....

I manage a record store in Canada, and I'm determined to get this CD in the
Top fifteen the week it comes out, maybe even the top 10! I have a lot of
cool prog customers who I know will buy it, and some of my regulars (who
don't even like DT) really liked BMS and YNM. Unfortunately, we are
competing against the Bjork and Boyz II Men in the same week. Yuck.

I also stock every available domestic and import CD that I can get. How
many votes do I get for the coolest record store.

Enjoy the CD's jammers! Can't wait to hear your comments in the next week!

After listening to the CD 6 times, it finally got me hooked. I think it's definitely more "accessible" for the average listener.

My only complaint is on "Take Away My Pain". I think the live version from the Fix for 96 show was so much more passionate. On the CD, it sounds like just another ballad. I definitely think it will become one of my favorite CDs once I get more familiar with the songs.

Well. I downloaded the 44 KHz MP3 files for all of the new songs of off FII(From a Web-Site in Hungary), and finally hooked up my computer to my stereo. All I can say, is that I am thoroughly impressed with the material on FII. Result: I'll by this CD in a new yourk minute!!! I must admit, when I was introduced to the low-quality version of "You Not Me", I was a little bit worried. I thought for a second that they had gone low-fi. That, however, is not the case. I love this CD!!!!!! I have been listening too it day in and day out for the past 3 days!!! For those who were worried about Derek, don't. He has certainly found his niche. Anyway, I don't want to get into it too much. I'd rather wait for the real CD to come out. So until then,

    WOO! Okay, here's a thought...it's cheating, but for a good cause.... ;D

When it comes out, advertise that DT is the number 1 new release, ahead of Butts II Moose and Bjoke, and if people ask you what the hell is up with that, then well, KICK THIER ASSES....no no no, tell them DT is the "next big thing" and everybody seems to be buying it before everybody else knows about it (We all know how cool those people are who buy albums from bands that aren't well known and then say they suck after they make it big....)

Heh heh heh, that'd be cool.

The only band I think of as 'keyboard metal.'

Uh, um, well, actually, Mastermind's "keyboard" stuff is actually Bill Berends playing MIDI guitar. No real keys, at least on the two albums I have.

    >If you can find it, the British band "Shadowland" is awesome; it has Clive >Nolan on keys. Clive is also keys for >"IQ", "Pendragon", and "Arena", but they aren't keyboard-driven the way >Shadowland is.

I guess two out of three ain't bad. :) Actually, the keyboard player for IQ is Martin Orford, not Clive (tho with all the projects he has, it's an easy mistake). I own both the first Arena album and Shadoland's _Mad as A Hatter_ and find nothing special about the keyboard playing on either one. Same with the one Pendragon I heard. I guess that's just me, tho'.

Just thought I'd clear that up.

    Ok, ok...

I *know* that Tool has been discussed a lot here, but I didn't care for those reviews until I saw their video "Aenima". It is really strange, but very interesting. And not very heavy (like I like :-) ). So, I'd like to know what you can say about this weird band and what I should try to hear first.

I've seen some reviews from "common" people on some webpages. Comments ranging from "They're *THE* greatest band in the F@CKIN' world" to "Please, do yourself a favour and don't buy their trendy album". I must say that I got a little confused. Could you clear this situation to me, please? Any comments are welcome.

The only things that I know is that they have 2 albums and that everyone seems to find their songs strange, with unusual lyrics (are the lyrics interesting?)

Thank you very much for any comments, Roger...

    Greetings ye 'jamanoids...

    Our resident Lemur, Marcel, quoth:

    >Long time ago !!!! I've been off the web for a while, I was really busy >lately, but I am back now, The homepage is also updated with some things, >nothing special, but we are making arrangements for our forthcoming release >(second album !!!!!!!!)

Wahoo! Marcel, keep the updates coming to the 'Jam. A new Lemur Voice album would be really high on my want list. Is there a working title for the disc yet?

    >Well, we did write seven songs now and we are >making the eight right now, so when that is done I guess we have enough >songs to fill our second CD, the songs are quite different from our first >release "Insights", it is heavier (definately !!!!, more chunky guitarparts >!!!!), more experimental, more emotional and a lot more experimental, so be >warned........

And forewarned is forearmed :) Seriously, I'll bet a lot of 'Jammers were as happy to see this as I was. Eight songs...please tell me that one of 'em's a kickass instrumental like "Akasha Chronicles" from the first album....

And you can add all the crunchy guitar parts you want, but make sure that Franck isn't buried in the mix. One of the things that make "Insights" a great album is prominent keyboard parts; a lot of prog bands just tend to mix them way down, or something. Keep the keys up front!

New FW, new 'tage, new Magellan, new DT, new Eldritch....new Lemur Voice? '97's a great year to be a prog fan.

    Cheers, Phil

I am hearing alot of news about getting Dream Theater on the Radio. Lets not stop. Here is the response I jsut got from my Radio Statiosn here in CT

    > > thanks for the recent email regarding D.T..... > > ...we're starting to play the cut more and more and possibly > will put it in regular rotation... > > ...thanks for listening to 107wccc. >

Anyways, please anyone with some spare time, send them a request at mailto:fmamwccc@aol.com. And Connecticut Area Jammers - please give the station request line a call at 523-WCCC.

Also, dont forget to go to Nicole Stachowicz McWatters Page (http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/Set/5039/radio.html) and start E-mailing those radio stations.

On September 23rd - we should start trying to get DT some exposure on the late shows - any ideas, organizers, etc. . . .

Also, dont forget that Dream Theater will be releasing more than one single, so lets not get complacent after the 23rd. I know you will have the album in the CD player, so why should you try to get Dream Theater played on the Radio? - Simple, to encourage Radio/Music Industry/ etc.. to support this type of music. I hate to hear about bands as good as Fates Warning playing in Shithole Bars to crowds of 50-100 people. How much longer do you think they will stay together and make music if the market stays this way???? Then, all of us will be bitching about how there are no good bands anymore.

Also, it is important that this album sells well, so that the record company will have incentive to get Dream Theater back in the studio for Future albums, and incentive to put out LIVE CD's and Videos.

Lets keep it up, starting now - get off your a** (actually stay on it if you are at your keyboard) and lets start requesting BMS. (And dont forget to get you non-internet friends involved, too)
