We all know DT kicks a$$ but how would 'Joe Q. AlternaGrunge' know
unless they lure him in with a song closer to what he currently listens
to? My first DT experience was hearing PMU (a 'commercial' DT song) on
the radio. It was close enough to what I liked so that I didn't change
stations, yet it was different enough to get me interested. The result
was that I bought I&W and was blown away.
My point: I would never have heard them if they had only recorded
'100% ALL-NATURAL PROG'. None of my friends listened to them. Would
that radio station (WAAF-Boston) have played songs like 'Metropolis'?
No way!! By shunning the 'commercial' songs, you're denying other
people the chance to fall in love with the dream that is Dream Theater.
You're also denying the band the opportunity to get the widespread
recognition and popularity they deserve. Sorry to get corny near the
end, but it had to be said.

            Hey,

After the first few listens I must say that the 2 songs that
"reached" out at me are the 2 that everyone is complaining about. Anna
Lee is my early fav. You must listen....theres a lot of emotion kickin'
around in there. Hollow Years too! I'm quite impressed. Once again the
band I enjoy the most has created another masterpiece.

                                                    Enjoy, It's Finally here

Just wondering what the past/present keyboardists of DT used... Can't
remember what KM used, and haven't ever seen what Derek uses... (is that a
    Kurzweil sound?)

also... I guess in opinion of the FII album.... the "Showboating" of the
electrical instruments (wild solo's, bright sounds, fast tempos, etc) isn't
as much there as in the previous albums, but I still love it... the only
song I don't care for too much (from a DT perspective) is Anna Lee....
This is the kind of song that If I heard on the radio, I'd be saying
"that's kinda cool"... but since the DT grading criterion is much higher, I
can say that this song isn't very impressive (or passionate as it seems it
should be). All in all though, the album is great. A departure from the
style of the previous 2 albums, but a parallel move... I don't think it can
be judged against any of the other albums... it's a different style.

I'd have to say the "weird" song award goes to the Myung trilogy (trial of
tears)... I like this song immensely half the time, the other half the time
I just skip it and go back to LitS or HY or something else....

The "Lyricist award" has definitely changed hands... from Kevin Moore to
John Petrucci. Petrucci has had some cool lyrics in previous albums (but
in my opinion was always just edged by KM)... all his songs in this album
kick ass!!! Whoever said that Hollow Years sucked... WHAT???? That song
is awesome... Sure it's slow... but listen to the thing!!! Portnoy's
getting there... A definite improvement (IMO) in every album he's written
for... (except ACOS... no topping that). Myung just needs more than one
song on an album to accurately give it a judgement... but he's always been
the silent man I guess. :)

    >Well my friend at the radio station got the promo copy of the album a week
    >ago and asked if I wanted to listen to it. I told him that I'd be waiting
    >for the release date. Call me crazy but it's a much more rewarding
    >experience when you get to go down to the CD shop after class (or
    >sometimes even DURING class) and buy a new album and then just listening
    >to it in your room for the first time.

alright... you're CRAZY!!! :) No, I understand both sides of it, the thing
of it is, the elektra rep sent a copy to the radio station, and another
copy to the radio station (care of me!), so the station had 2 copies, gave
me one of them, I came home after class, and listened to it in my room for
the first time (didn't wait for my show that night, so that I could have an
advance opinion of it 'on the air').... I don't think the "buying the
album" makes it a rewarding experience... I think the listening to, and
appreciation of the music makes it rewarding... (i.e. if I was given an
album as a birthday gift, I wouldn't hold it in any higher esteem than one
    I purchased myself)...

By the way... I've been listeing to this album for the past week in my room
(decent speakers), but just today went out in the living room (where my
cerwin-vega 15s are) and jacked it up.... WHAT A DIFFERENCE.... Most
albums (even awake), I don't notice much difference between my
AcousticResearch speakers and my CerwinVega's, but this one definitely had
    a huge difference.

    >Heh. Anybody else ever run into another 'jammer *without* benefit of a
    >DT-related T-shirt to help out? :)

Well, does one that I introduced to the jam count?? :)

    Hi all

some time back I promised that I wouldn't send a review of the new
Dream Theater album to the list, and I'm sticking to that promise.

On Friday, my CD dealer gave me a promotion copy of 'Falling
Into Infinity'. I drove home faster than I should have done, nearly
running over several small old ladies on the way, fired up my stereo,
slipped in the disc and thought "...." Let's just say that a lot of you are
going to be disappointed, like I was.

I guess I'll buy the official release today anyway and hope it grows
on me, that way I can give the promo copy to my girlfriend.

If you're looking for wild, crazy, heavy prog stuff, then your best
bet is to go and buy 'The God Thing' by Vanden Plas.

    stay safe and happy listening

Hi Jammers, i bought the cd in italy (18-9-97).....and surely I&W and Awake
    are better.

My question is: How can be in the same album of DT two songs as "Follow
    Years" and "Peruvian Skies"?

P.S. I would buy the best Rush album, can you help me?

    P.P.S. Anyone knows Ayreon?

    Hi

I just can't describe how I feel right now.
Yes, I have Falling Into Infinity :-)))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))

First of all, a story :

In Germany, most (all) of record shops open at 10:00.
I went to the CD shop about 09:50 and wait until they're at 10:01.

Well, I came inside and the guy looked at my shirt (Lie/Waking Up The World)
and he smiles and said : (just before I sopke a world) "Do you want the new
Dream theater ?. It's here. But you have to wait because I must first open
the box and calculate the price". Then he took a box and opened it and
    there were 30 x FII CD's :-)
After 5 mins (He tried to give the ID number to his PC and calculate the
price), he said: " I'm sure you are the first one in the hole City (250 000
people live in Krefeld), that now have the new DT-album" :-)

    Now my review :

I like DT because they are unique and I love Falling To Infinity.
Every album of DT is something very special with a unique style.

Like John Petruccie said (in an interview just after Awake was released) :

"You can't compare one DT-album to the other one".
"I like each Rush album for different reasons"
"A real DT fan should try to analysis all our works one by one"
"Sometimes, it will take a lot of time but don't try to judge too early"

    This is exactly my opinion.
Yes, "Falling Into Infinity" is diffrent, but it's another great DT opus.
Music In Progress and not always the same thing.

    - A New Millenium :
Incredible. Prog at his best. Derek is awseone.

    - You Not Me :
Well, a good song. Not my favorite but I like it.

    - Preuvien Skies :
One of my favorite songs. The Pink Floyd's touch in the chours is really great

    - Hollow Years :
Another good song. I think they've put it on the album because the pressure
from the record company. Anyway it's a good ballad.

    - Burning My Soul :
Wow ! This one rocks. Really heavy but excellent. After the cut of the middle
    part, it's still great.

    - Hell's Kitchen :
I love this one. One of the best DT songs ever. Derek is once again awseone.

    - Lines In The Sand :
Prog, Prog, Prog ... Another masterpice.

    - Take Away My Pain :
Now, after listen to the real audio sample many times, I love this version
a lot. Both versions (the Original from the fix shows and the album version)
    are really good

    - Just Let Me Breathe :
A good song. I like the instrumental part most. Progressive and Melodic.

    - Anna Lee :
Great piano ballade. When Queen and Elton John unite :-)

    - Trial Of Tears :
One of my favorite songs. It's another long great prog song.
There are some Pink Floyd influences here. I love it.

After all, I love FII. It's really good.
I hope DT will sale a lot of FII copys, so the Record Company will maybe release
"Metropolis II", "Where Are You Know ?", "Rise The Knife", "Cover My Eyes",
"The Way It Used To Be" and "Speak To Me" in 1998 as an album.

    Let's hope.

Sorry about my English. I try my best :-)

    ARASH

For those of you who have not yet been introduced to Soundscape's music, =
let me tell you: you are definitely missing out on an extremely talented =
and refeshing band. Soundscpae can be categorized as Progressive Hard =
Rock but yet their songwriting goes way beyong that. The musicianship of =
this band affords them the luxury of erasing the boundaries between =
genres and breaking the barriers of what progressive music "should" =
sound like. I can liken them to "Images and Words" era DT or a younger =
more modern sounding Yes but thi still does not begin to explain the =
originailty and true sound of their music.
"Discovery" is Soundscape's latest CD and it is packed full of 78 =
minutes of progressive mayhem. The album starts with the 23 minute long =
epic "The Christmas Carol". Right from the dissonant keyboard melody in =
the beginning, you know that this is not going to sound like a typical =
    band or a typical album.
I could go on forever raving about the superior musicianship, =
songwriting and originality of Soundscape and their music but my words =
could still not do it the justice that it deserves upon listening to it. =
To get in touch with AngelThorne Music, (who is handling Soundscape's =
album "Discovery"), you can go to http://www.angelthorne.com and you =

    Hi all,

Let me explain what I want to do and I would be very happy if someone
can tell whether I can do it or not.

I run the Blind Guardian web page at http://porter.desy.de/bg and I
want to get the band to buy the domain name blindguardian.de. When
purchasing a domain name is it possible to have it linked to one page
on a server and not just an IP address?

So I want people to be able to go to http://www.blindguardian.de and
this would then redirect them to http://porter.desy.de/bg

Keep in mind that I do have root permission on porter so if something
needs to be done there I could do it. And for various reasons I can't
just use http://porter.desy.de, that would be the easiest of course.

So any help would be appreciated, thanks.

    Jason

Wahey! Someone actually agrees with me! I like all the Paradise Lost albums (my favourite before One Second was "Icon") and when I heard how different the new album was supposed to be I didn't expect it to be much good. I bought it anyway (I hate incomplete collections :-) and couldn't believe how good it is. Interestingly, the more up-beat songs (the ones which are more like the older material) are, IMHO, not the best on the album. I can't really describe it any better than you did above - haunting yet uplifting. Brilliant.

This is, for me, Bruce's best solo album to date. Forget what people are saying about how this should have been the new Iron Maiden album - although the Maiden influences are more noticeable on this than on Bruce's previous albums this is a Bruce Dickinson album from start to finish. Another brilliant album.

Thought some of you should be treated to this most excellent post...oh how I laughed...

Posted by hank on September 17, 1997 at 00:31:21:

Just my half a cents worth:

    Record Company: "Roll Call!"

    Record Company: "Metallica?..." Metallica: "present"

Record Company: "Queensryche?..." Quensryche: "present and accounted for"

Record Company: "Dream Theater?...Dream Theater?...Dream Theater!?...oh, there you are, it's about time!"

Record Company: "Now that I have you all here I'll begin the lesson... Metallica and Queensryche you've heard this before so bear with me.

In the beginning a band is like a flower, putting down roots and reaching for the sun. Then as the flower grows it puts down what we call "grassroots" which are very, very strong. These grassroots are very powerful and loyal and their voice is strong. These grassroots then join together and circle around the little flower calling out to the animals of the barnyard (the cows, the horses, and the sheep)..."come eat of this flower, for it is good for your mind and your spirit". The smarter animals hear this call and seek out the flower and devour it, ingesting its wonderful and powerful essence. These animals become enlightened and seek out more flowers like the one which they have found with the help of the grassroots. The sheep watch the other animals search and ask:

"Why do you work so hard for your food? There is plenty of grass here to eat, I don't have to search for my food, and I have all I can eat."

"But your food tastes so bad, and we do not feel at all enriched by it", reply the other animals.

"But all of us sheep eat it, and there are more of us than you...so it is obviously much better".

The other animals shake their heads.

"The grass is rewarded for its part in feeding us too" say the sheep, "it is well watered and fertilized. The flowers YOU eat whither, for there are so few of them and they grow on the edge of the field."

Record Company: "Now what do you want to be? A flower on the edge of the field whithering, or part of the huge field that the sheep devour?"

Metallica and Queensryche: "The field is good"

Dream Theater: "uh, is that field that you metaphorically refer to BIG enough for us?"

Record Company: "The field is big enough for EVERYONE! But, the field IS crowded and there is no room for anyone to spread out. If you want to live in the field you must become smaller. You must throw away all the things that you have carried with you since you were born. You must become more appetizing so that the sheep will seek YOU out and reward our expenditure of fertilizer."

Dream Theater: "Do we have to throw away everything?"

Record Company: "Not at first...right Metallica and Queensryche?".

    Metallica and Queensryche nod.

Record Company: "We will give you a little extra space in the beginning, as the sheep start to enjoy you more we will fertilize you more, metaphorically that is of course."

Dream Theater: "where do we sign!" ------- End of forwarded message -------
