I just call HMV here in Quebec City and the guy said to me that he has
the CD but the can not sell it until September 23, but he also said
something special to me,that they do on the night monday-tuesday the
Official "lauch" (i hope my English is correct) at the bar call
"le D'AUTEUIL" . That means the group is very popular because they
don't do that with every group.

OK, it's about time for me to make another big order for some new CDs, and there's a few that I know I want, but also some that I'm not so sure of, so I thought I'd appeal to the 'Jam for assistance. So, if anyone out there has any opinions, reviews, descriptions, or ideas about the best CDs to start with for the following bands, I'd be eternally grateful if you'd share:

Also, if there are any Angra fans out there (and judging by the recent discussions around here, there must be at least a couple....), I'm looking for some opinions as to which of their CDs would make the best first purchase......

Rusputin record store is my fav too. li might be able to answer your question regarding these prog bands.

Doctor Nerve (U.S.A.)

- What can I say, Doctor Nerve is a weird band from Cuneiform records. All bands from this record company are interesting for people who like experimental stuff. Doctor Nerve are an ensemble band, led by Nick Didkovsky the guitar player. It's hard to describe their music because nobody sounds like them. If you like experimental music, let's try "Skin". They might sound close to avant garde jazz with heavy music and some weird sound effects.

Renaissance (UK)

- Dinosaur prog with a killer female lead singer, Annie Haslam. Renaissance music is not rather soft (not metal at all). I might compare them with Camel. Their old stuff are good like "Turn of the cards" and "Sheherazade and other stories".

Peter Hammill (UK)

- Hammill is the lead singer of a n engliah dinosaor prog band named Van Der Graff Generator. He is also a good song writer and keyboard palyer. Hammill has many his own solo works, all are very emotional with his good quality voice.

Hawkwind (UK)

- Most people who like Gong will like Hawkwind too. Their music is very heavy, psychedelic music with lots of tape effects. "Space Ritual" is a good album.

Gong (UK/France)

- Psychedelic space rock/prog band/fushionjazz music can describe Gong music in different periods. They have trilogy albums "Flying Teapot, Angel's Egg and You" that are very good if you like old psychedelic space rock with vocals, but if you like fushion jazz (no vocals) you might want to try "Shamal" or "Expresso". I just saw Gong concert last Monday in san Fran, good show.

Mike Oldfield (UK)

- Dinosaur prog with new age. This depends on which album you listen to. If I think of Mike I think of "Tubular Bell", "Ommadawn" and "Platinum" are also good. Tubular Bells is his trademark. If you want to try some of his stuff please do not start with the ones in the 70's, don't start with anything in the late 80's.

Both "Angels Cry" and "Holy Land" are great albums. "Holy Land" (their second), is a little more progressive and is influenced by Brazilian music in a few places. "Angels Cry" (their first) is more straightforward speed metal (if you can call any metal with that much classical music mixed in "straightforward"). If I had to pick one, I'd say to go with "Holy Land", but I honestly don't think you can go wrong with either.

Hey, people! A pretty cool thing happened to me today (friday). I went to my local record store to pick up FII. They didn't have it, or maybe they just hadn't found the time to unpack it yet, since this was right after opening. So I go back a couple of hours later, and not only did they have like 30-40 copies of it, but they were actually playing the album (Lines in the Sand was on when I was there). I think this must mean that at least someone understands the significance of a new DT release! The only thing was I knew I wouldn't be home for another 4 hours. Just imagine the frustration of walking around with this year's most anticipated album in your bag for half a day, and no chance of listening to it :-)

Allow me to advise this one. ELP are Keith Emerson (keyboard master), Greg Lake, (vass, some guitar but not much, and vocals) and Carl Palmer (drumming maniac). They are not metal by any means, so if you are into metal, forget it, well maybe not. Their music can tend to get totally crazy, and may need some time to absorb, but if you can get into it and wrap your head around it, it's awesome shit. I would say that they sound like nobody I have ever heard. As far as a staring point, here are a few ways to go. Firstly, if you have the money, get the Return of the Manticour box set. If this seems overwhelming, start with the Best of ELP. It will give you a good idea of what they sound like. If you can find it, there is an album called The Atlantic years which is a double album and will give you more than the best of. If you don't want to start with a compilation album, there are a few things you should know. Stay away from Love Beach. I haven't bought this album, but I have heard universally that it is horrible. I plan to buy it just to be a completist, but this may not be a good starting point. There is also two albums in the 90s, Black Moon and In the Hot seat. The latter suffers from being kind of poppy, and Keith's arm surgery inhibitted his playing. Black moon is good, but not a great starting point. That album is not classic ELP, although it is good. Works, both volumes are not good startingpoints either. You can get any of these albums. ELP, Tarkus, Trilogy, pictures at an exhibition, which is live, and has about two songs on it, and Brain Salad Surgery. I couldn't say which one is best, I love them all. There are two other live albums, Welcom back my friends, and Live at the royal alber hall. The latter is from 1993 or so, has Mr. Palmer on electronic drums, and while it is good, just doesn't have the same magic that Welcom back has. Welcom back suffers from poor sound quality, but it is a great starting point. If you are into long songs, pIctures at an Exhibition, Tarkus and Brain Salad surgery are the ones you may want to start with. I hope this helps.

Actually as far as I was told, the reason you can't make out some of the lyrics is because they pump the vocalist's coice through a bunch of synthesized filters to give it that almost electronic feel too it. Take it easy and be rady for it on the 23rd!

Hey, just to let you know, my computer has been in a sort of overhaul in the last few days, so the FTP was taken down... When it is up, it's usually for about 8 hrs at a time, (the service cut-off is 8 hrs), so sorry if you get cutoff, but there's really nothing I can do about it... My only suggestion, Use WS_FTP Pro or somthing of the like, so that you can resume your downloads... as of now the service is back up, though I've had to limit the # of concurrent users, as I need to get some work done too.... (VHDL modeling and such)... so anyway, if you missed it earlier, the info is

YES ! I just bought "Falling Into Infinity" in Holland ! I am still listening to it... Almost heard it ONCE (track 9 of 10), so I guess I'm ready to post my review, like a good 'lil 'Jammer. ;-)

ALL I can say is that it FUCKING SUCKS !!!!!

My stereo, that is. ;-) (the album's great, as expected)

My laserdisc player either doesn't have any taste, or it just can't play cd's that last over 60 minutes any more (probably the latter).

Luckily, I also have one of those hifi sets that has *more* buttons than the Space Shuttle... It's one of those sets that has a zillion different settings (rock, pop, classis, dance club). Of course, all of them sound like shit. Oh well... Here's my review :

Seriously, I think the guys did a great job ! I have listened to it three times now, and love it... I think I spotted another reference to Learning To Live (just like they did in "Wait For Sleep"). It think it's "Only A Matter Of Time" before that happens, though ! Don't be surprised when they add a rap to one of their songs on any of their next albums ! Rush did it on "Roll The Bones". Fish did it on "What Colour Is God?" too (complete with Scotish accent). :-)
