    Yeah, it does, but I think this album screams PORTNOY even louder! I
    gots two words to support this argument: Double Bass.....

    As for visualizing the music in my mind, I find this album to be in like
    a dark shade; it's like they mixed the melody of I&W and the dark emotion
    of Awake, 'n it fuckin' KICKS!!! Well, 'cept for TAMP. For some odd
    reason I see Labrie singing this in a floral silk shirt with a lei around
    his neck. Go fig.

    Then again, I might see this as a dark album 'cuz we spent all night
    drivin' across the state listening to it...bwaha (That ruled!) Nachos rule!

    Just a few Disturbing Things I noticed about FII.

    1. On the cover, that looks like Kevin Spacey on the left and Ed Kowalczyk
    (lead singer of +Live+) on the right.

    2. The back cover of the CD booklet. I distinctly remember some Jammer
    saying that that blurry thing there (it's one of the binocular guys, out of
    focus) looks like a giant erection. Which it does. With that in mind,
    take an even wider perversely Freudian mindset and you'll notice that the
    photo's frame is rather vaginal in shape. Hm. (Combine this with all the
    water imagery on the album, and maybe we should start calling them "Wet
    Dream Theater.")

    3. John Petrucci's photo in the CD booklet makes him look like either Dave
    Grohl or Baba Booey.

    4. This is the most disturbing thing, to me: you'll notice in the credits
    that "You Not Me" was written by Dream Theater and Desmond Child.

    Do you all know who Desmond Child is? He's a professional song doctor, a
    hired gun, a hitmaker, a guy that record companies hire to come in and
    "help" a band write a hit song, give them a little boost. He worked with
    Aerosmith quite a lot, co-writing a lot of their newer hits (Dude Looks
    Like a Lady, Angel, What It Takes, Crazy, plus a bunch of their other songs
    that aren't hits -- in fact, Aerosmith has more songs co-written with
    outsiders now than they have written by just band members, which is pretty
    sad). He even came out with his own album, "Golden Child," undoubtedly
    titled in sly reference to his ability.

    So, is this good or bad? I mean, it's the first EVER time that DT has had
    an outside source brought into the songwriting process. And the guy is an
    industry name, not a friend, like Neil Peart's friend Dubois or whatever.
    Then again, I guess it's kind of a heartening sign to see Elektra take such
    an interest in DT that they'll hire some high-paid stooge to help them out.

    At this point I'd like to say that I am most assuredly NOT part of the "DT
    SOLD OUT" opinion group. But I'd be interested to know just what Child's
    role was in the songwriting process; like, did he just come in with a chord
    progression or vocal melody and the band just added it in? Or did the
    record company bring him in after the song was done and get him to "fix"
    the song? And was the band OK with this? I mean, they never mentioned it
    before. Sounds kind of sketchy.

    If any of you get a chance to talk to the Theater boys, thru interviews or
    on tour, this would be a great question to ask them.

    And if Elektra releases that bitch as a single, well, that'll confirm at
    least their side of the conspiracy.

    Just wanted to stir up the shit.

    Anyway, so far this record kicks ass, and I'll subject you all to my review
    of it eventually.

            First off. I just have to say that I am bummed. We have three record
    stores here on campus, and none of them had Falling into Infinity. And my
    schedule did not permit me to take a stroll down the hill. Alas, the quest
    for my own pesonal holy grail will be put off another day (one), until my
    schedule permits me trekking time.
            I have, however, had the luxury to find a site last week with the MP3's of
    each song in a high-quality form. Not the CD, I know, but, they have shown
    me that there is little reason why this CD should not spend the next month
    in my Disk changer!
            Rather than give a full, song-by-song review, I'll just state a couple of
    impressions.

    TAMP
            Remember Mike and the Mechanics? Remember their song "In the Living
    Years". The verse reminds me a lot of this song. I think that's cool.

    New Millennium
            That second verse is very cool. The samples and aux percussion adds a
    cool flavor.

    Trial of Tears and Hell's Kitchen
            It's nice to hear extended JP solos on CD. He really has a feel for
    constructing a dynamic solo. Props.

    Derek
            He's good. No question. If you listen to the CD enough with headphones,
    you will here all the subtle things that he does. And that rhodes sound in
    PS is the nut.

    Anyway, the bottom line is, this CD is worth the wait, easily. I'm
    looking forward to my trek down the hill tomorrow.

    Why is it that many of you out there seemed to be looking for Awake 2 ??
    Doesn't it make sense in the time between Awake and FII that the band
    could have grown.. dare I say progressed into new areas.

    Simple fact, if a band doesn't grow, and take chances now and again, they
    become stagnant and boring. Sure.. you run the risk of alienating some of
    the resistant to change fan types.. but so be it.

    DT is a clear example of this need for change. So is Queensryche. When was
    the last time you had a QR cd come out and find it to be EXACTLY what you
    expected or wanted.

    Besides.. I've found that the music that grows on me, tends to live longer
    than something that I get into easily. Every time I listen to FII I get
    something more out of it..

    Ok.. no more soapbox..

    Well I forced my coworkers to endure the new DT in the computer lab.
    Afterall they made me listen to Simply Awful (I mean Red-no offense to SR
    fans...) this morning. Well after 1 listen on crappy computer speakers,
    this cd rocks. It sounds way better from a cd on crappy computer speakers
    then over the net via real audio. I can't understand how anyone can call
    this album a sell out. It is not a sell out, it is definitely DT. I can't
    wait to get this cd home to crank on a real system... I'm not sure Doug's
    voice fits on Lines but I need to listen to it some more. I need to
    listen to FII again...

    Maybe my coworkers need to listen to some Sepultura? heh heh heh

    In all honesty, I like the production on "Peruvian Skies", "Hollow
    Years", and "Lines In the Sand" MUCH better than the rest.

    Having said that, they sound like CRAP compared with any of the previous
    releases - maybe even WDADU.

    There are some killer songs here, though, and "Burning My Soul" would
    have been BLISTERING if the guitar had any balls to it... :)

    Oh yeah, except for the coffee can Mike's hitting... :)

    Just looking to get a piece of history, first of all. :)

    Secondly, to the comment about the tape/CD covers being different:
    Storm Thorgerson has a knack for doing just this (I haven't been able to
    verify this, as I haven't seen the tape liner yet)...just look at Pink
    Floyd's _The Division Bell_. The CD cover has the steel heads, while the
    ones on the tape appear to be carved of wood.

            LITS: It's Voices meets Over My Head. Can it ever get any better
    than this?

            Doug Pinnick adds an ingredient to that song that DT sorely
    needed. KJLB is a good vocalist, but he plays the voice like an
    instrument, taking it to heights and breadths unheard of to add power and
    polish to the songs. King's X is a different animal, conveying an
    incredible amount of emotion in vocal-driven songs while playing
    prog-worthy but less crucial instrumental accompaniments. Those of you who
    are turned off by Doug's addition to DT may not have had a chance to
    experience the KX musical direction enough, because it's almost the exact
    opposite side of the progressive coin from DT. I think the combination of
    the two makes quite possibly the most complete DT song I've ever heard.

    A couple of comments:

    1) The new issue of Bass Frontiers has a couple of words from yours truly
    in it. I've got reviews of the last Queensryche and Altura records in
    there. I know...not all that useful now, but I submitted them a while ago
    -- it ain't my fault they're only just appearing now. They're on my web
    page ( http://www.cfmc.com/music/music.htm ) in longer format, along with a
    couple others. I'm gonna move a whole load of 'em over when I get the
    chance...there aren't too many in there now.

    2) "Roll The Bones?" YES, man! I know it's blasphemy, but I actually
    like that record better than, say, "A Farewell to Kings" or "Power
    Windows." Actually, there are a chunk of records -- "Moving Pictures,"
    "Permanent Waves," "Hemispheres," "Counterparts," "2112" -- that are all
    kinda vying for the title of Adam's Second Favorite Rush Album ("Hold Your
    Fire," far and away, is my first), but I think I'd generally say that "Roll
    The Bones" is IT.

    That's it...I gotta go back and slave for the (wo)man.

    I know some people that can be nice at times of stress and this is because that's just the way they are, a person with an assholish personality will just become more of an asshole at times of stress (since it's harder to hide it) and a nice person will stay nice (maybe more impatient, though) at times of stress...and here's an example for why I think it's possible (& better) to judge people at times of stress: I knew a girl that when things didn't work the way she expected them to, she would just start yelling at everyone around her...when things were all right and everything was fine, that girl was nice to everyone (and I mean EVERYONE) no matter what she thought of them (can you say 'hypocrite'?)...anyways, only at times of stress was when the "real" her appeared and she said what she thought, not what she needed to say for everyone to like her...so there, this was my story, I ain't gonna re-read so I don't know if it progresses coherently, but oh well...

    now seriously, I think that it sucks that it's only in plain view...on the other albums I was wondering where they will stick it this time and it was quite interesting...it took me a while to locate it on the I&W cover, though...my point being, I don't like the way the majesty logo is thrown all around the cd, I rather have it put somewhere on the cover, yet in a different prespective than the plain 2D one...

    ok points made on first-hand listens - the WORST TYPE OF REVIEW KNOWN TO MAKE............

    1.) First off, a lot of times in the songs, LaBrie's voice just doesn't fit....his enunciation of words in the high registers are very noticeable, he growls where it doesn't fit, sings I&W-like when it doesn't fit, and there are times where his voice just doesn't do anything for me in the songs. Don't get me wrong,, his voice is good a majority of the time, but some- times it just doesn't at all.....

    2.) The production seems quirky...sometimes the production absolutely rocks, others it is just terrible, veery inconsistent IMHO.

    3.) You Not ME is a great song, if they got rid of that chorus. Very cheesy, takes away from so much of the song...may- be the Desmond Child influence on there....

    4.) Peruvian Skies is a great song. 5.) BMS and Hell's rock, though BMS lyrical structure are so blah.

    6.) Lines in the Sand is a great song too, but DOUG PINNICK has got to go. I like the guy, but totally ruins it with those harmonies....

    7.) Take Away My Pain - would sound better with a SDV-type effect on the vocals. Seems like LaBrie is singing without any emotion on this. Overall, the song is emotional, but the vocals don't add to the emotion.

    8.) Petrucci, Portnoy, and Myung rock. That will never change.

    9.) Gotta give kudos to Derek. He does a great job. It seems like there might be some bad choice of keyboard sounds on some parts of some songs. Dunno if that's him or if it's the producer. He's got some killer chops, but he's definitely got a different style than KevMo.

    10.) Like Just Let Me Breathe - don't like LaBrie's singing that much on some parts, but I like the song a lot. The quick vocals part, with the keyboard in the background reminds me a bit of One More Astronaut by I Mother Earth....

    I'm sure my views will change on a lot of this, once I do the typical sit-down-and-LISTEN job on this CD..........but I know that some of them won't. For me, I&W hit me right off the bat, I guess that's why it's my favorite album. This one may take a while, but I'm sure I'll like it. I won't say that DT sucks or anything like that, cuz I think they're great. I guess the best way to put it is that FOR ME, they're having a lull for me.
