Hi Jammers!
I don't know if it's too late to say this to y'all, but:
A HAPPY CHANGE OF SEASONS!!
A new DT album is out there, it's spring here and I didn't get a copy of
FII yet. :(

Well, in the shows DT made here in Brazil, JLB sang all Doug Pinnick's
parts, so... BTW, the new version is incredible live, you'll see.
Especially the solo and the intro.
Oh, and adding to the Anyone else hear... series:
Anyone else hear:
..Steve Morse in the YNM solo?
later!

Time for me to add my contribution to the long list of FII first
impressions....
Let me preface my comments with the remark that I was one of the people
who waited for the CD to come out rather than hear sound files of
questionable quality of a few of the songs. So I got to hear the entire
album at once, the way it was meant to be heard, and I'm glad I did. I
think I would have missed out on part of the experience otherwise.
[Descends from moral high ground...]
Like all DT albums (and pretty much any music that's worth listening to),
it's impossible for everything to sink in on the first couple of listens.
This is one of those albums that's going to take a long time and a lot of
listening to to fully appreciate. But, after hearing it, I have no doubt
that the time and effort put into this album will be worth it.
It wasn't at all what I was expecting, but that's hardly surprising. Yes,
it has some industrial touches. Yes, there's even a (gasp!) grunge
influence in a few places. Well, (in the immortal words of Garfield),
big, fat, hairy deal. It's still the Dream Theater that we know and love,
and they've produced another CD packed full of first-rate music.
The only real criticism I have so far is with Doug Pinnick's vocals. I'm
going to have to side with the "what the hell were they thinking?" camp.
No offense intended to all you King's X fans, but IMHO he just doesn't
fit in.
A few comments on the album cover, while I'm at it: When I first saw the
cover, I didn't like it at all, but now I think it's quite fitting. As
somebody recently pointed out, the mathematical symbol for infinity is an
'8' lying on its side. Well, a view through a pair of binoculars (two
circles lying next to each other), is basically the same shape. In
addition, you're gazing off into the distance....into "infinity", if you
will. Finally, as somebody else pointed out, the ocean is a pretty good
metaphor for infinity as well.
As for the two guys looking at each other, well, for some reason that
reminds me of two opposed mirrors. You know, if you set up two mirrors
facing one another and stand between them, you see copies of your image
reflected back and forth, receding to, well, infinity. Two guys looking
at each other through binoculars isn't quite the same thing, but for some
reason it conjures up the same sort of image in my mind. Or maybe I'm
just weird....
One final random comment to all the Rush fans out there: The beginning of
"Trial of Tears" reminds me rather strongly of "Xanadu". Anybody else
notice this?
Well, I've definitely exceeded $.02 worth of random comments, so I'll shut
up now. Happy listening, everybody!

My guess would be either Suicide as you mention, or just someone leaving
the relationship (and family). Anyway, the focus seems to be on the
"survivor" of either case, and how he/she has kept their head under a
rock, "Once the stone you're crawling under is lifted off your shoulders",
and not realized what is going on. The consequence is loneliness,
"crashing down of Hollow Years". The message seems to be pay attention
in your relationship.
What do ya think?

reminds me of the game Discs of Tron the way the go up and down.
You can also make the guys on the stools do other acrobatics also by doing the above and instead of rotating bring the sides forward one at a time (bring left side towards you then drop it back and bring the right side to you) almost like one guy is jumping of the page at you. BTW an unstable chemical balance in the brain is helpful for doing this stuff

haven't seen any responses to the original yet, but does anyone know about the credits to the Del Fuvio Monks??? I tried twice listening to the album just trying to find the monks, and when the CD ended, I realized that I'd stopped concentrating on that about halfway into New Millenium :).... Just can't do it... The music is just TOO enthralling... can't concentrate on something so petty when listening to a work of art such as this. (i.e. research papers)... ahh... procrastination... I have a whole new excuse to do it now!!!

totally agree... I have never heard a Kings X song before... (fairly new to the prog. music genre (not DT, but prog in general)) but due to the sound and quality that Pinnick helps add to this ***REMARKABLE*** song, I think I will purchase one in the near future (again -- any recommendations from KingsX fans???)

I've been trying to get merchandise (i.e. posters, shirts, 8x10's, etc.) for a while, and all I seem to be able to find are crap (or high volume stuff I already seem to have - a very few "awake" things)... much less the rsabbs.com site has nothing listed for new merchandise (and they stopped listing *any* merchandise at all about the time I thought about getting some of it)....
1) does anyone know when the rsabbs.com site will have the new merchandise out 2) does anyone know of some cool DT paraphanalia at other sites? If so, please indulge me...
>can somebody do me a favor.. if there are any studio pics of dream >theater in the studio get those scanned in so I can see them?
heh.. check out the AWAKE booklet. :) But yeah, I agree, other than those shots, a few studio pics would be cool...

uhhhh... no. Do you understand what JLMB is? It's mocking the music industry they just showed that they're the exact opposite of what everyone (in the industry) would have them be...
>Anyone figured out what Hallow Years is about - my guess is Suicide.
HOllow Years IMO seems to be about wasted time...
oops.. the cd player just rolled over to a savatage disc... time to roll back to FII.. :)
HEY ECKIE... dude... chill out... than/then who gives a shit... we're here to express our opinions/learn/share about Dream Theater... don't make it a formal restricted forum for grammatically correct posts. I hate reading emails with spelling/grammar errors as well (since I usually TTT to proof my posts... I guess you could say its a "pet peeve"... sorry, just had to throw that in :) ..)... but, on the jam I don't care and let it go .. I'm here to enjoy the stuff people have to share about DT/prog... not to get pissed off at minor mistakes they make.

READ FIRST: I'm sorry I took so much space, but I RARELY post and I figured this made up for it. Also I REALLY want feedback on my thoughts. Thanks in advance.
I know I know. Just what you wanted to hear....more first impressions of the album. Well here goes anyways:
Just to let you know I took Rush's Hemispheres out of the CD player to listen to this so I gotta get into a different mode here......but I'm already jazzed on this because I found the CD for $8.99!!!! (oh yeah..got headphones too :)
I'm just going to type as it plays, so here goes....
New Millennium: Whoa....kewl intro. Kinda reminds me of the time when I first heard 6:00. JM and DS do nice jobs here too. What a weird sound at 2:04. Ok first impression of the singing on this song reminds me HEAVILY of Layne Staley's of Alice In Chains in the "Dirt" period. Werid sample around 3:40, sounds like the windings of a clock. I LOVE the drums here. Sounds like MP is hitting cowbells somewhere in there too. I like the groove at 5:20 or so, goes into a cool double-bass part. DAMN is JM present. He stands out a lot more than ever. I like it. AWESOME instrumental part towards 6:30. Seems that I've heard the riff at 7:20 somewhere before but I can't place it.All in all.....VERY cool song.
You Not Me: Weird...opening riff seems familiar again. Ummmmm trying to take this song in, but I'm not sure about it. The guitars sound like AIC "Dirt" era again with that 'waa' on there. Personally I think MP could have done something else here. Just seems kinda repetetive. Harmonies huh? Well I guess they work here, but it's not doing much for me. Hmmm what are they saying at 4:20? Can't make shit out. Well...this song was...ummm...interesting. Didn't do much for me, but still a pretty cool song.
Peruvian Skies: Ok before I satrt this one, I hope I'm not biased with all the hype I've been hearing about it. Whoa...sounds kinda like a slow mettalica song. That is until JLB comes in :). AWESOME chorus. "Under Peruvian skiiiies" :). Ahhhh the JLB that I love. JP is in top form here. The best I've ever heard him. I like DS's little elec. piano thing in there too at like 2:20 or something. I KNEW IT!!!! IT HAD TO GET HARD!! Heheheh. "Poor Vanessa" :). AWESOME!!! This is one of the best songs I've heard in a LONG time. Whoa gets even HARDER. I'm still trying to digest JP's new guitar sound. It's not that I dont like it, it's just that it's different than I'm use to. This instrumental part is INCREDIBALE!! All I have to say about this song is: "Poor Vanessa!" :) Awesome.
Hollow Years: Wow....JP shows a little different style here. I like it a lot. Groovin'. What a cool ballad. A whole different approach. Nifty little licks by DS in here too. This is a really nice song. It flows good and has a great groove. Mike looks really happy (Just admiring the picture on the other side of the page :). Great ballad.
Burning My Soul: Ahh the single. WOW! Hi JM! Nice build here. Oh....hi JP. and then of course the tradmark MP double-bass. :) Yup..sounds like a single alright. Did MP tune up his snare for this song? Damn things ringing like a SOB. Hmmmmm.....don't like the voicebox deal. Reminds me of Motley Crue for some reason. Cool riff there at 3:30 or so. Right over the solo too. I like it. What???? He doesn't give a "WHAT"? Hehehehe.....no wonder it's the single! :) Well the sum of this song : Ummmm it's the single alright.
Hell's Kitchen: Hmm no lyrics must be an instrumental. Anyone ever hear Mr. Bungle's Disco Volonte? Boy that piano sounds a lot like something off that album. Cool though. AWESOME! This get GOOD....damn what a solo by JP. Cool 5/4 there. Oh oh oh do i hear a little tinny sounding keyboard there like in I & W? Cool. WOW....... 3:00........ go there.......it's good. This song rocks the shit out of everyting I've heard so far. Incredible chord progressions going on.
Lines in the Sand: Another hyped up song. Here goes....Weird samples at :40. This will be AWEOSME live. Can't wait. Yup...that snare sounds different again. In fact the whole set seems tuned lower or something. Whoa....2:00...weird. Cool riff that it goes into though. Hahahah little double splash there. Boy you know lemme comment on how well rounded Kevin Shirley has made the band sound. I really like the new sound that they've acquired. YEAH!!!! Doug!!!! Sounds great!!! Hell yeah!!! Damn is this song just groovin'. Nice break at like 5:40 or so. I like the pino mixed in with the guitars. Kinda a dual solo. Wow...JP is awesome here. This is really great stuff. Uh oh, did MP make a mistake at 7:55-7:56? Just a little time skip I think. Not to be THAT critical. Just thought my CD was skipping or something. Cool breakdown at 9:50. With the keyboards in between the drums. Oh...almost forgot about Doug, but he came back. And even harmonizing with JLB. Cool. Awesome ending. Lemme digress on this song a moment. There is a LOT to take in here, and I probably made some lame comments, but I have to go back and listen to that one a couple more times.
Take Away My Pain: Cool intro!!! Totally unexpected! JLB sounds different here. He sounds more...ummm...'real'. Is that the word? I dunno, I guess the other songs had some kind of effect on his voice. So is this a ballad or just a cool song? Either way, I like it. Heheh cool triangle added in there at like 3:20. I think it would have been cool if JP would sing a little here. I mean it is his dedication.
JustLet Me Breathe: Another cool MP intro. Whoa...great riff by JP. Here's something I've noticed on this album. MP is groovin' A LOT. Especially on the toms. I like it though. Intersting lyrics. You know what I'm talking about if you're a fan. Holy shit....FNM keyboards at 2:12. Boy this song gets really industrialish. And damn fast! wow. What? Go to 3:56. Sounds GREAT!...... I had to back it up to get the time for that one. And back to the toms MP goes :). Awesome ending too.
Anna Lee: Ummmm Elton John anyone? :). Of course right above Derek's picture. Now, I think some people said they didn't like this one. Why not? Seems like a cool ballad to me. I think some of you don't think Derek can replace Kevin still. I think this song should prove you WRONG! Dead wrong! This is great stuff. Congrats to JLB for some great lyrics too.
Trial of Tears: I won't break this one up into parts because I'm tired and I think this post is too long. So here goes: Ummm "Xanadu"? Hahah totally ......can't miss it. Cool. I like this so far. Nothing striking yet though. Except for the ultimately low bass :). And of course another set of awesome lyrics by JM. This song seems more of the Awake era to me. I think this one may be my personal fav. Ok going into Part II here. You can tell by MP's awesome intro/solo. JP really lays down the law on this solo. Classic stuff. Another one I hope they play live. This would be a monster. Cool groove at 8:10 or so. JP playing with that fuzzy shit on the guitar. I hate that. Oh well....doens't really lessen the song though. And Part III with the acoustic intro. Great harmonizing here. For some reason I always pick JM's songs as my fav. What a perfect song.
Well...now that I've take up a whole jam by myself I have to say that I am going to have to sit down and work on this album. With songs that have such diversity and rich detail, it's going to take a while to get used to it. MY first impression of the album though is that I think it is the best thig DT has EVER put out period.
More after a couple hundred listens.
