I went to the record store last night here in Chicago to pick up FII at
midnight. While standing in line, there were these two guys with a camera
and a microphone filming the people standing in line. The camera wasn't
marked, and between not being able to tell when it was on or not, and not
wanting to sound stupid on the air ("uh...what's this for?"), I didn't
    bother to ask.

Well, today I was watching the news, and low and behold, I see the record
store I was in and a bunch of people standing in line. The story they
were reporting? "People lined up at the record stores today to buy Elton
    John's Princess Diana tribute single."

Gosh...I thought I was there for DT....

call me ignorant, call me FW impaired, call me a new fan of FW (which I am)... but what does ApSoG stand for... I've seen many many posts referring to it.. (i.e. it's a 50+? minute track, it's cool, it's this and that)... but what is it, what album is it from, etc. Just interested...

And speaking of VIDEO's, who wants to bet that there will be no video for it... (a 50 minute video?... Thriller x 2!!)... I think the guys would die after about 25. :)

    YOU FUCKING RULE!!!!!

the percussion on this album rocks my ass... I love this shit!!! MP is as close to God as we will see on the earth... Not that I like his playing or anything :)

Review ------------ All songs kick ass (except Anna Lee, and even that is fair)... Burning my soul is catching up, now in 3rd to LiTS and HY...

I don't see what the huge stink about the chorus of YNM is... sure it's not *great*, but it's catchy and I like it... (was it just because it was the first song everyone heard? So they had to find fault with something?) I don't know, I don't care... This RULES!!!!

There... that was quick, painless, and to the point.

News at 11! Bill Gates is yet again bombarded by the Justice department as they investigate his alleged use of subliminal messages in popular music!

I believe I can hear what you're talking about. It shows up right between 10:14 and 10:15 on my CD player (you can hear Derek drag across several keys going down the scale...). At a quick listen, it can somewhat resemble a similar Windows sound (chimes.wav), but it's not...just Derek ;)

Goes to show how conditioned we can become to something we hear every day. (Microsoft knows what they're doing ;).

I can just see it know... New person being introduced to Windows for the first time (or Windows with a sound card at least)... "Hey...is that a Dream Theater sound I hear in Windows?"

    OK:

To clarify my previous "jumping the gun": There is no grunge here.

    Some various ramblings now:

    1) Microsoft sound at 10:15 in LitS (I hear it!). The piano plays a "twinkle" down a few notes, resembling the windows sound.

    2) New Millenium, lines in the sand, and Hell's Kitchen are AWESOME!

    3) It will take a while to get used to Hollow Years, Take away my pain, and Anna Lee. I'm not crazy about these ballads yet, but they sound nice.

    4) I'm overall disappointed with respect to lack of odd times. They have heavily included the 6/4 time, though...

    5) Trial of Tears intro and outro remind me an awful lot of the intro to "Xanadu", by Rush.

    6) Not many metal sounds at all on this CD. More of funk/fusion sounds.

    7) Yes, I hear many cool riffs in the realm of Extreme's "pornagraffitti". i.e. --> "You not me" and "just let me breathe".

    8) I think Mike Portnoy could do a lot more on this CD, but he HAS altered his style somewhat to include some more rhythms and "latin" type beats. Good job again, but wish he "showed off more".

    9) I wish James' voice came out more clear and had more melody in places....

Anyway, I shall be thoroughly enjoying this one for a LONG time. I was pretty skeptical and negative about it at first, and after having accepted the fact that not much creative time sigs are present (except for Hell's Kitchen), I am listening for all the really cool riffs they play.

I also here some HitNF/Queensryche influence present.

That would be "A Pleasant Shade Of Gray". Their latest album. It's the name of the album, and the song (it's just one song in 12 parts). I don't recall it's actual release date (not too long ago), but it can be hard to find in your average record store (I didn't see it in Tower Records). I bought mine from one of those new/used record stores. They could do a video on just one part of the song if they wanted to (some parts can stand on their own). As for a "live" concert video, definitely, and I believe some others on here mentioned there are already plans for it.

The two circles created by looking through the binoculars on the front cover could probably be interpreted as infinity, also. I'm sure the binoculars themselves probably have some other significant meaning, though.

    Ahoy mateys,

This album simply rocks! It is filled with great instrumental parts, and the vocals are great. Doug Pinnick is a fine addition on Lines in the Sand. Derek fits right in with the gang, and in my opinion, adds a great flare to the songs in his soloing! Bad ass work by every member of the band! Great recording. I couldn't possibly call this album over I&W and Awake, but it ranks just as high (which is pretty damn high) as the others. I don't think that there is anything missing here. I do miss the original logo, but since they incuded the Majesty symbol, I'm quite pleased. As long as that Majesty symbol keeps on popping up! THIS ALBUM ROCKS. Dream Theater, if you are reading this one, GREAT WORK and see you on tour!

I hope that was sarcasm; if not, look at the rocks, then look at the binoculars above them, then look at the rocks, then the binoculars... :)

Something different to try; take the cover picture, and hold it about 5-6 inches from your face. Unfocus your eyes and stare through it (like you do for those 'Magic Eye' 3-d pictures). Rotate the cover, and the fellows with the binoculars won't be looking eye to eye, even though they are still 'parallel' to each other. Song connection? "Don't look past me." :)

If you don't care, then skip this post.

I have had this album on CD since Friday. My initial impressions were very harsh, and I'm glad I didn't write a review then. Now that I've had time to get inside this album, and to let it get inside me, I think I can offer a much fairer review than I would have been able to four days ago. So, here we go.

    New Millenium

Wow. This is the last thing I expected to hear from Dream Theater. I love it. OK, so track #1. First chance to see what the boys have been up to, see where their creative impulses have led. Right away, I love the production. I have to say, I was worried. But this sounds crisp, clean, but still dangerous the way DT is able to sound. This is definitely different, but hell, 6:00 was different than anything on I&W. I HEAR MYUNG!!! And thank Ged for it - he did his homework. Derek sounds great... but more on him later.

This is definitely not balls and chunk, but it definitely has that progressive feeling to it. That interlude/bridge thing in 4/4 4/4 4/4 3/4 is nice. And Derek and JP really rip it up with each other the way Kevin (sniff) and JP used to do. So far, I like. James sounds weird here. But this is a nice introduction to FII.

    You Not Me

Wow. This is the last thing I expected to hear from Dream Theater. I hate it. Once again, the production is great - I can hear each instrument rather clearly. And they're all played well. That's not the problem. This just sounds so... It's not even grungy to my ears. The chorus is Bryan Adamsy to me. Mike tried as hard as he could to make this cool, bless his little heart, but it wasn't enough. The *sound* is great. The *song* leaves something to be desired. Well, I guess I hope the alternakids will like it.

    Peruvian Skies

Holy fuckin' shit!!! Now, I mean, I'd heard the Fix version of this many times, and I thought it was good *then*. Somehow, they managed to make it even better! That opening guitar riff sort of floats around your head like a smoke ring if you wear headphones (and with this album, it's a must). Yeah! This is the James I know and love! This man is the best singer in rock and roll, bar none. Harmonies!!! They listened to me!! :) (OK, so it's no TLF... :) And the build-up really sneaks up on you, till you're air-drumming those double-bass patterns and screaming "Under Peruvian Skiiiiiiies!" and thinking, "Waitasec, this started as a slow song." Lock the doors and windows, Martha. They're back.

    Hollow Years

The wheel. The automobile. The microwave oven. The Internet. Hollow Years. It's a wonder that mankind survived at all before these innovations. Can you imagine - or even remember - what life was like before these gems?

    Burning My Soul

Ahh, the next Fix track. Good song. I'm glad it's the lead single. It's almost as good as I remember from the Fix versions. I'll play it over and over again, cause it's good, but it doesn't really blow my skirt up the way the rest of the album does. (But at least it wasn't hacked apart by the so-called "Song Doctor.")

    Hollow Years

Yeah, I know, I wrote about this one already, but I just wanted to make sure you have given this one a good listen. Listen again now. If that chorus doesn't give you that warm fuzzy feeling, seek psychological attention. You *can* be medicated to be relieved of that ailment. As someone said a week or two ago, this is *the* song to use to introduce your non-metal, non-prog friends to DT. All my top-40 friends want copies of this one. (Naturally, I told them to buy the album. Heh heh heh. :)

    Hell's Kitchen

Are you shitting me? Is that legal in New York State? Jumpin' Jesus on a pogo stick. I have to practice more. (Come on, guys, fess up. Did you slow down the tape to record that one?)

    Lines In The Sand

This is your father's Dream Theater. All you fuckin' wankers that are whining because you want to hear more Awake-type stuff, put the FII disc back in and just repeat track 7 over and over. It doesn't get any better than this. Balls, chunk, prog, and 12 minutes of generally good stuff.

Coolest moment of FII: Mike's double splash hits right before the vocals start. Second coolest moment of FII: JM's little harmonic thing going on towards the end, coming out of the bridge. (I must have played that part 20 times in a row when I first heard it.)

There is, it would seem, a rather definitive schism regarding the Doug Pinnick issue. Those jammers that love King's X the way we love DT are all sorts of goo goo over Doug's vocals. The rest of us realize that they don't really fit the song. Oh, well, I've learned how to ignore him. (Hint: just sing along with James really loud.)

    Take Away My Ballad

I ordered the Japanese import so that I can put the demo version of this on my car tape. Nuff said.

    Just Let Me Breathe

Yeah! This is the other song that will satisfy the old-schoolers. Mike has come into his own as a lyricist (as if ACoS wasn't good enough). James' growling just fuels the fire on this one. The thing I like most about this song is how it sounds like controlled chaos. There was once a phrase used to describe Led Zeppelin: "tight but loose." The production is as crisp and perfect as it is on the other songs, but it still has the feel of a song that was recorded all at once, with everyone in the same room, feeding off each other like they do live.

    Hollow Years

    Did I already mention...

    Anna Lee

If there is anyone at Elektra with half a brain cell left, they will begin to promote this song heavily, starting tomorrow. And not just because it's such a beautiful song. Because in the first three seconds I said to myself, "Oh, yeah, Derek's a big fan of Elton." And with Elton's soon-to-be-world-record-breaking single being released this week, what better time for a record company to release something that can ride on his coat tails? James' voice gave me the warm fuzzies on this one again. I could *see* Derek emoting as he played this. (Anyone remember the post about how much Derek got into what he played at JP's clinics last summer? *That* look.)

    Trial of Tears

Wow. This takes a while to digest. I know I like it, but I can't yet speak intelligently about it. I think this one may become DT's "The Camera Eye" though. (That's a good thing, you non-Rush fans.)

The production: Top notch. I'm glad they got Kevin.

Derek: Top notch. I'm glad they lost Kevin. (Though I do miss his lyrics.)

JP's sound: Yeah, right. I'm a bassist. I'll probably notice before Christmas, but I make no promises.

Weird sound #1: Take Away My Pain, about 56 seconds in, what the *fuck* is that? A car alarm? Derek fucking around?

Weird sound #2: Anna Lee, at 5 seconds and 13 seconds, you can hear James breathe really weirdly.

Typo #1: You Not Me, last line.

JP's picture: Good Ged, he *does* look like Baba-Booey!

Derek's picture: Hey, look, it's Paul Stanley! :)

Mike's picture: Is it me, or does he look about 10 years younger there?

Please send all flames to /dev/null. Oh, yeah, I updated the FAQ again. Version 5, baby!!!
