    While we're on the subject of the liner notes... Someone
    mentioned a little while back that this was Portnoy's album.
    Well, the band member pictures would tend to support this
    idea. Check 'em out. They're all in this NIN-ish black
    and yellow sytle, stuck off in a corner of a page with
    lyrics all around. Except for Portnoy... He's dead center,
    full color, all alone on a page, inside one half of an
    infinity symbol.

    I wonder what he did to get such special treatment?

    And on the subject of the music, we've had four days of
    nearly continuous thunderstorms. I managed to sneak out
    between squal lines and grab my copy of FII. While
    listening to Take Away My Pain the second time around,
    I somehow became completely convinced that it was a bright
    sunny day outside. I was completely shocked when thunder
    shook the building and I spun around to see nothing but
    dark and sullen storm clouds outside my window.

    More musical impressions at a later date.

    So I go to Tower in Burlington, MA, where I used to be the night manager
    (sorry all the Boston people who I told I was gonna meet in town, but I
    just couldn't make it), and I walk in at about 10 of midnight to the
    hordes of EJ fans, and this guy gets in line behind me. He had the WORST
    body odor in the world. And he starts making conversation with me (well,
    at least, he tries, but I ignore him). So the line takes about 40
    minutes to go down, and then I see my friend Steve ringing people
    through. I say, "Steve, I'm gonna kill this guy behind me. Gimme the new
    Dream Theater." And he gets it and says, "Hey, I have the promo of this,
    I've been holding it for you for about two weeks now...."

    Grrr... /me takes hostages.

    Anyways, on with the review:

    Anyone who thinks FII is bad smokes pounds of weed every day. This is
    the most amazing album that I have ever heard. End of discussion.

    (Side note: any other bassists out there as aroused as I am over JM's
    sound?)

    Well, after my first blush comments, and fifteen more listens, I'll give
    my opinions...

    #1 Production. Hate it. No huevos, man...

    LItS, HY, and PS all benefit from the best production on the CD - which
    is still not great, IMO. BMS and ANM actually suffer from the weak
    guitar tones and metallic drums. Of course, there are only about three
    CD's that I've like the drums on that have come out this year, so I
    guess I'm not up on the current trends... :)

    I hate the snare on BMS. My coffee can comparison still applies.

    It's no surprise the guitar in PS sounds like Metallica - JP used the
    same kind of amp setup to record it. I wish his crunch rhythm sound was
    that good for the rest of the CD...

    #2 Songs. Fabulous, with the exception of you YNM, which I don't even
    listen to. I also don't like the neo - Latin moves in TAMP. I DO really
    like AL, which surprised me, and I think KJL did a good job lyrically...

    LItS is one of the best songs I've heard this year, period. It left me
    with that impression from the fix show I saw, and I now see why. I think
    Pinnick works wonderfully in this tune, and I love the groove.

    PS SMOKES! Good, moody feel to this...

    I like JLMB, but I'm not floored by it. JP's soloing is really cool...

    ANM is a cool structure, I just wish the guitar had more balls...

    #3 Performances. Excellent. JP's playing is restrained where it needs to
    be, JM is smooth and slick, Derek shuts up the KevMo supporters, MP
    kicks serious butt (especially LItS, where his right hand is out of
    control!), and, well, KJL does well, but doesn't transmit the feeling in
    some of the slower stuff.

    Verdict: Buy it, listen to it, love it. Hang Kevin Shirley, and torture
    Desmond Child. :)

    Personally ... I think Hollow Years is about the point in time when she
    realized that she was not the reason he left. The "hollow years" is the
    accumulation of time she wasted blaming herself for something that was
    not her fault. The realization of all the wasted time has had a profound
    effect...

    Well I've had the FII since 16th, and as much as I want it to grow on me,
    it doesn't. I find the CD dull, not a single song got stuck in my head the
    first
    4 times ...
    When I first heard LITM, I went "Whoa DT rulez !". Between I&W and Awake
    DT really got it right. With Awake beeing less cool than I&W, FII had to be
    even worse ....
    There are a couple of songs worth mentioning (in favour of DT):

        Burning My Soul (a bit Awake here ?)
        Peruvian Skies (Has it's moments)

    DISCLAIMER (Flame protection):
    This is strictly IMHO, and my taste of music is more in the range of I&W.
    The above statements have never stated that DT sucks or anything,
    I just got a little disappointed with their new release, that's all.
    Compared to other bands, DT kicks asses.

    I'm not a King's X fan, but I really like the vocals that Doug adds. He
    strangely reminds me of Murray Head who sang as Judas on the Jesus Christ
    Superstar soundtrack. Doug sings these parts very emotionally, almost as
    if he's a torn man or in some kind of pain. Very similar to Judas. I have
    no idea what LITS is about yet, so I don't know if these thoughts fit, but
    'pain' is the feeling I get from these vocals, and I love it.

    y,hello, all. this is pretty much the first time i've done this, i just
    subscribed to the ytsejam mailing list. first of all, though i've only
    been a fan for 1.5 years, Dreamtheater easily became my favourite band,
    and FII did not dissapoint me in any way. this is what i think based on
    the 24 hours i've had to study it:

    A New Millennium:

    one of the songs that i don't remember too well, however, i knew when i
    heard it that the rest of the album would follow in its majestic lead.
    somehow reminded me of PMU, kicking off the album and lasting about the
    same time.

    You Not Me:

    okay, i heard some people were dissapointed in this one. why? this has
    got to be one of the best laid-out songs. what really hit me with this
    one was the chourus, which is still running through my head. this song
    is not to be taken too lightly.

    Peruvian Skies:

    WAIT- does this not sound EXACTLY like a way slower version of Enter
    Sandman? and doesn't the guitar distortion sound like Creeping Death
    after it picks up? all in all, a very cool song, haunting in a way.

    Hollow Years:

    although i like dark, heavy music, i have a weakness for slower songs of
    a certain magnitude. if it can speak to me the right way, i don't care
    how slow it is. this song rules.

    damn i forgot which one is next. oh well.

    Hell's Kitchen:

    wow. *awestruck*

    Lines In The Sand:

    yes, this one is definetly "progressive," continuing the Dreamtheater
    tradition. again, somehow reminds me of PMU. very good song.

    ahh ....

    okay, i didn't memorise the tracklisting, but i remember some of the
    last ones .... ahh..

    nm 10, the soft one that KJLB wrote is sweet. i can see myself listening
    to that one again in the future.

    Trail of Tears:

    hmmmm... IAW again .... very very cool song. i especially like the first
    and last parts, and the fact that its 13 minutes long. i don't know how
    they do it.

    well, this is my primary review again, i'll try again after i've
    memorised everything.

    hey- do any of you know any really good progressive/metal bands i should

    the new album is fargin' awesome, i've been listening to it nonstop since i
    got it. i love it, but the two things that irk me a little bit are the
    chorus in You Not Me, i just think it's lame and so generic sounding, the
    rest of the song is fine, just the chorus sucks. Desmond Child can stick to
    helping Aerosmith stay on the charts. the other thing is that whole take
    the time lyric reversal in just let me breathe. what's up with that? i
    understand what they're saying, it's just sounds weird to me. otherwise,
    the new album rules!!!!

    Hmm....I'll have to listen to HY a few more times....My first
    intrepretation is based on only a couple of listens.

    As for the ocean/beach sand references, the album is loaded with them,
    both literal "I was standing by the edge of the water" and
    metaphorical "The tide is turning now baby".

    I totally agree with Mike...that's almost the only thing I could find wrong with this CD...it's fucking Awesome!!! I still think perhaps the order is a bit screwed...once I figure out the ultimate order for songs on FII I'll post it...other than that, this is a killer CD! Oh yeah, does anyone else think that YNM doesn't really fit in with the rest of the album? I mean lyricly it does...but it's like the one song that just seems to be in it's own little world musicly

    What can I say except the man is a genius! I think many of the recording types on here will agree with me. Listen to the tones of each individual song...Each song has so many unique qualities that it's just incredible...some of them the keys stand WAY out while the giutar is just kinda there...others the BASS is CRAZY while the keys are low...I love how the production plays a HUGE part of the listenability of the album. I have one minor gripe so far with one song other than YNM (which I do like by the way...just don't see how it fits)...I like Doug and Kings X...but does anyone else think his voice kinda doesn't work with James' voice? I mean I don't even think he's high in the mix...I think he's just got a lot more lung power and the whole "drawing lines in the sand..." part of LitS just kinda draws my ears from the rest of the song...which BTW is Incredible! Just a thought
