To all norwegians and scandinavians! It should be at your local store
    NOW! Run and buy it!
Now I'll have to get home and give it a couple of listens.
I'll comment on it in the morning!

Before you read any further, let's just take it as read that "A
New Millenium" is a very hip piece of music.

However, the main rhythm of this song, especially during the instrumental
bit at the end, reminds me a lot of King Crimson. Actually, it
does more than remind me of King Crimson, it IS King Crimson. It's
palyed a little faster, but the melody is REMARKABLY similar to
"Discipline" from the album of the same name. Even the rim click
and tom stuff that Portnoy is doing is so reminiscent of Bruford,
it makes me wonder why they didn't just get Bill himself to the play
    on the record.

Anyone else catch this similarity? I've played this for my band and
the first thing my bassist said was..."Whoa, Crimson shit."

see how I redesigned it a bit ;-)

BTW, the rsabbs-pages seem to be a bit dated, still having clinics from March

I totally disagree with the KM show-off comment. Let's take a look at a
few tunes. Firstly, on Awake, the only songs he really shows off in are
6:00 and his solo in scarred. Outside of that, what does he do that is
such a showpiece? On IW, PMU, another day, for starters, have no solos in
them. Take the Time has a few keyboard spots in it, and Surrounded is a
ballad where JP does more fast runs than KM does. Need I go on?
Metropolis? Who doesn't show off in that song? In fact, name one instance
where the musicians of DT don't really show their stuff. In fact, I like
showoffs. JP, MP especially and JLB with those stratospheric notes are
all showoffs to some degree. If they didn't show off at all, you would
have what we call straightforward grunge music. Who wants that. Without
their showing off, you wouldn't have such classics as Metropolis, TTT,
and LTL. What about YTSEJAM? Instrumentals for me have always been about
showing off to some degree. What is a gutar solo but a showoff segment.
Isn't that the way with any solo? I am not saying that showing off is
good all the time, there is a time and a place, but I thought Kevin was
very tasteful in his playing. Unless somebody can show me a case where he
did overdo it. I never knew KM to rip out 32nd notes in TLF or anything
like that. Listen to Eve. I don't hear any KM overdone key parts. I think
the guys are very tasteful and only blaze where they need to.

    Message-ID: <199709241755.KAA09575@polaris.pacificnet.net>

Well, here is my story regarding FII...

On my lunch break yesterday, I ventured over to the Tower
Records across from where I work to pick up the new CD.
I check the "New Releases" section, and there, amongst the
multitudes of the Bjork CD's and others, was NO Dream
Theater!!!! I was worried that the release date had slipped...

Composing myself, I strolled over to the Dream Theater bin
to see if it was there.... Two copies left... I grabbed one and
    headed for the registers.

I was met at the counter by a seventeen year old zit-encrusted
kid who promptly told me to fork over 18 bucks and change!?!?!
Lo and behold, the price of the CD was 16.99! As some of you
know, new CDs are always on sale at Tower, and I informed the
"dude" of this and that the "CD should be on sale, right?" He
stared at me with this bloodshot glassy-eyed look, grabbed the
CD, looked at the price and said "uhhhh not on sale".

I considered raising a ruckus but the fever coursing through my
veins decided for me. Damn the price! I gotta listen to this CD!
I handed over my Amex and signed away on the dotted line.

    The moral of this story:
I am just glad that I am not a postal worker =)

The CD is great. Go get it if you have not already. Just don't expect
Images and Words and you'll be juuuust fine.

I have the following Dream Theater CDs that I'm putting up for sale.

all of Mike Bahr's DT bootlegs (all original, no replicas):

$50 Subconscious (Mike Bahr says $70-$130) $50 Acoustic Dreams (Mike Bahr says $140-$180) $15 When Dream and Today Unite (still available from Mike Bahr at $20) $30 Antiquities (Mike Bahr says $55-$80) $20 Scenes from a Memory (REPLICAS available from Mike Bahr for $20) $15 Precious Things (still available via Mike Bahr for $20) $15 Darkest of Winters (still available via Mike Bahr for $20)

( I have two copies of Scenes from a Memory. I bought the additional copy because of utter stupidity on my part, doh! )

    Dream Theater International Fan Club

$10 Christmas CD 1996 (may or may not be available for $15 membership)

    other bootlegs

$15 Dream Out Loud $20 The Dance of Eternity (2 CD set) $20 Lords of Sound (2 CD set) $20 Lost in the Sky (2 CD set)

    All are in excellent condition.

Even though I still fervently love Dream Theater, I've listened to these over and over again and it's time for me to move on. I still listen to the regular studio albums though.

If you're willing to buy the entire batch, I'll discount. If you're in the San Francisco Bay Area and are willing to come by to pick up the CDs, I'll discount (and you'll also get to inspect the CDs to make sure they're in good condition). I don't know how much to discount but it really depends on whether you'll take the entire batch or not.

Yes, I realize that the current "market" price for Subconscious is about $70-$130 and so on but I'm hoping that you'll be enticed to take the entire Mike Bahr package. I probably won't sell the Subconscious and Acoustic Dreams CD just by themselves. I also feel that some of the "market" prices are a kinda a ridiculous, even though I understand how prices can go high for hard-to-get CDs.

I'm less familiar with the prices for the other bootlegs that I obtained. I think I got some of them from cdnow.com but they don't list prices anymore. I think I paid more than $20 for most of them, but I've priced them conservatively.

Anyway, let me know (1) if you're interested and (2) if you're in the Bay Area. If you're offering to buy up the entire collection, you'll be favored over other offers I get.

2- Do I need to include an envelope ? If I do what size and how many stamps ?

    >< It should be obvious to you by now IF YOU ARE a Dream Theater fan that Dream Theater is neither Megadeth nor Cacophony. They have changed dramatically over the course of their writing, not just because they're maturing as a band, and not just because they're getting better as musicians, but because they are consciously trying NOT TO RE-WRITE the same old music they've been making. Dream Theater thus far has proven itself NON REPETITIVE. That's a quality I cherish in music, with so many bands releasing the same song over and over again ><

Is this some kind of shot at Megadeth? It seems you're saying Megadeth IS repetitive. Listen to Killing Is My Business... and then Cryptic Writings, I guarantee you won't even know it's the same band.

    >< Is that a windows (as in Microsoft) sound I hear in Lines in the Sand somewhere around 10:15? You know, that standard sound that you get when open a window. Sure sounds familiar. ><

LOL...I hear it, too...I think you're right, but I can't quite place where on my computer the wave kicks in.

Anywayz, my review coming up next.

I don't know about all of you but I really feel strongly about this whole comment of "grunge.' As far as I can tell "grunge" as many people define it, is dead. There is no grunge sound anymore. The only people who were grunge were Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains, Nirvana, and Soundgarden. And with the last two gone and the first two not even sounding like what they used to I think one could easily theorize that grunge is dead.

If one doesn't feel that it is dead than the only explanation I can give is that the terms "grunge" and "alternative" are worthless nowdays, because now it is just normal music, popular music if you want to call it that. There is no distinction any more, and the usage of either "alternative" or "grunge" just dates the user and also I think sounds like a "holier than thou" position.

That's just my opinion, I could be wrong... Take it easy!

    Hello there...

Well, I'm now listening for the 8th time to FII... and I gotta say:

This could have been a much much better album if the production was like in Awake or even I&W.... At least the snare isn't sampled....

    Anyhow...

Best song on CD: Lines in the Sand.... I just love the bass/keys unison on the beginning and after the 1st and 2nd verse.... you know, the electric-sounding ones....

    That's about all....
