I caught the Dickinson show in Dallas, last Friday night, and he kicked
*major* ass! What a great, powerful show - Adrian Smith and Roy Z. traded
screaming lead guitar throughout the night. He's got a great band - don't
miss it!

Hey.
I actually found "Carved in Stone" by Shadow Gallery in my local
Blockbuster and decided to give it a try. It kicks much ass!
It has all the stuff I like about I&W: lofty lyrics, lots of solos
(musical masturbation?), big fat keys, and synchronous runs. Great stuff.
Plus it has a 20-min epic, just like every self-respecting prog band
should have.
Good stuff. I highly recommend it (esp. pre-Awake DT fans).

Great stuff! I found it on HardRadio's page. I can post the

No, they aren't. The owner prefers it that way, but exceptions can and
will be made - which show were you thinking of?
BTW, my fellow 'jammers, I'm going to throw this out for your
consumption.
Many of you know I play in the DC - area band Division. Well, we're
opening for Bruce Dickinson at Jaxx on October 4th, for you MD-DC-VA
types, or anywhere else. Since it's Bruce and Adrian Smith, performing
some Maiden songs as well as stuff from the excellent "Accident Of
Birth" CD, and The Geezer Butler band, it should be a good show. The
reason I bring this up is, as with the Fates show, we need to sell x
amount of pre - sale tickets. They are cheaper from us ($22 as opposed
to $24), and you don't get that ticketbastard charge, either. I'll be
happy to make arrangements to get them to you in the most convenient way
possible.
And if you're under 21, I should be able to get you in... :)
BTW, thanks again to all of our little family here that bought them from
me last time - it was well worth the trip, eh? :)
OK, sales pitch over - sorry if I overstepped my bounds, Skadz.
Now back to you regularly scheduled programming... :)

That's right, it's not even a cent, but 1/50 of a cent (I always thought
it's so funny when people say 0.02 cents, pardon me being so easily amused).
On to some hot topics!!!
1) Is KJLB an asshole?
Maybe. Maybe not. Neil Peart is known for being rude to fans. Geoff Tate
always seems to be an asshole in his interviews that I have read/seen.
That's not what worries me about KJLB. I'm much more worried about if he
will finally play an entire show without having his voice cracking up at
least once in a most horrible manner. Maybe instead of trying to put Angra
down, KJLB should try to be friends with Matos and maybe try to get a few
tips about keeping your voice intact while singing live (I know cuz I've
seen Angra live twice and Matos does everything he does on the CDs, and he
makes it look so easy).
2) Does DT sell more CDs than Angra in France?
Maybe. Maybe not. Angra is pretty big in France. They did not play just 7
or 8 dates there. They played A LOT of dates in France - I don't know which
Angra page I saw it on, but they had more than 20 dates listed only for France.
But the point is, who cares who sells more? Hanson already sold more CDs
than DT did in their entire career. So what.
3) What do I think about the new album?
It rocks all nadz. Nuff Said. It's all there: MP is playing superbly and
you can hear everything he does. JM is also awesome and we can hear him most
of the time. He should play more stick songs! Stick HAS to be the most
revolutionary instrument since the eletric guitar. Plus JP and KJLB are
stellar (KJLB is one of the best singers to explore the resources of a
studio, IMHO). And Derek... I loved his stuff since I saw the Japan
pay-per-view. He's just the perfect keyboard player for DT (considering KM
doesn't want to do it anymore).

I have been getting a mass of CDs this past month because of
recommendations from the Jam. That I would give me impressions (like
anyone is in need of that). My favs are:
1) Spock's Beard -- Beware of Darkness and The Light
They remind me at times of Supertramp (with their quirky lyrics and
music), King's X (with the background vocals), Steve Vai (when the guy
starts whalling on guitar solos...but not as technical as Vai), Extreme
(the orchestral stuff off of Three Sides to Every Story), Kansas
(Leftoverture days with the bass really kicking you in the butt), and some
Sunday brunch jazz group. These guys are great, but are not easy to
define. Some have mentioned that they are like Echolyn, but I never liked
Echolyn. Echolyn's music was never that emotional to me. These guys are
very emotional. Check out their website for soundbites.
2) Enchant -- A Blueprint of the World
Wow, this is one awesome CD, especially if you like a lead singer that
sounds like Steve Walsh from Kansas (well, make that the old Steve
Walsh...don't like how he sounds nowadays). I imagine Kansas without the
violin touring and living with DT for two years would sound like this.
Kind of sounds like Journey at times (music not vocalist). I have their
last two (Wounded and Time Lost) and they are great as well, but I like
this one the best so far.
3) Magellan -- Hour of Restoration
I like this better than Impending. The guitars seem up more in the
mix. And Union Jack is a fav. I love their vocal harmonies. I should
have gotten this a long time ago.
4) Shadow Gallery -- self-titled and Carved in Stone
Wow, this is Magna Carta day! This band rocks hard. I like both
albums, but they sound almost like two different bands. The first sounds
more like Night Ranger with some DT members filling in. The second is more
neo-classical at times and heavier (to me). A lot have mentioned how SG is
now their favorite band, and it is not hard to see why!
I also got Lemur Voice, and have liked them, but these above have stayed in
my CD player.

The only thing that I don't like about Spock's Beard is their choice of
words on the first album. One song is called FU and contains the word
"fuck" about 10-12 times. This bugs me (even though the vocal melody by
which it is sung and music is great). I hate to hear prog groups use words
like these. And I don't say this from a moral point of view, either. So
if you don't like my opinion, please understand where I'm coming from.
There is so much crap music out there; anybody can record an album of rap
music using thousands of such words and sell millions of copies. Or be
like Kiss or Motley Crue or Marilon Manson. These are the type of bands
(IMO) that have to use such generic phrases to illicit emotional response
from the listener, because their music or lyrics by themselves won't.
Now I understand the song context of which Spock's Beard wrote this, and I
can see where they thought it fit the mood of the song. But to me, I
listen to prog music primarily for the music, and secondly to hear some
refreshing, intelligent lyrics. The type of lyrics that make you say,
"That is the neatest way I have ever heard of expressing that!" Or at
least lyrics that leave you asking, "What are they singing about?!" But
the whole point is that they make you _think_.
Not that I'm harping only on Spock's Beard (which by the way, I'll still
continue buying and listening to their stuff . . . this is just something I
don't like that they did on _one_ song out of half-a-dozen others . . . for
the most part, their lyrics are _so_ interesting). Our own favorite band
DT introduces their first on the new album, using the word "shit." Please
understand me. . . I'm not on some religious or moral crusade, but I just
hate for them to do this. Whether they use it in daily conversation or not
(like on the Live at Tokyo video)...I don't care. I just think they could
have come up with more interesting lyrics.
There was a big debate before ACOS about them using the term "mercy fuck"
in the song, and then they decided to change it. I was glad they did,
because to me it takes away from the song, not adds to it. To me, their
strength lies in the power of their music, and the intelligent lyrics they
create (which has already been debated concerning their upcoming album).
I will continue supporting DT. I just hope they don't stay too long in any
"commercial success" mentality for long. To me, the people need to change,
not DT. Look at Fates Warning. Records a 50 minute song. Maybe they are
not as popular as DT, and not on as supporting a label as DT, but they do
what they want. Why does DT have so much trouble doing what they like (ex.
Portnoy's drums on I&W, the inclusion of ACOS on I&W, no ACOS until our
petition, no double album, no Metropolis II on FII, cutting 5-6 songs off
the album, constant pressure for more "commercial" songs, etc.). It is
just not right.
Please feel free to write me if you agree or disagree. I don't really want
to start a war on the Jam about the use of such words.

I have to say this, since everybody is trashing JLB. At the Birch Hill
show last year, when I got to do an interview with Derek, after the show,
when everybody came out, everybody in the band that I got to speak to was
nice to me. Maybe it's the whole be nice to the blind routine, but James
actually came up to me while I was standing against the wall recovering
from the show and the resulting migraine and asked me if I was all right.
Maybe he was putting on a show for the radio guy, maybe he was being nice
to the handicapped. but I got to talk to him for a few minutes and he
seemed pretty cool to me. I wasn't left with a bad taste in the mouth.
During the interview, I found derek to be a little cold, especially
towards KM, but I guess you can expect that when you are always being
compared to him. He was even icy towards the Internet, which has been his
harshist critic. Don't ask me to quote, I can't remember. After Derek
realized I was blind, he was a lot warmer towards me, even asking me
after the show if I needed a drink or anything. So, I guess it all
depends on the experience. As far as James being rude to international
audiences, you have to understand. Not being able to understand somebody
isn't exactly an insult. Maybe the way it was said was wrong, but you
can't fault someone for not understanding you. I won't say any more about
that. I think the bootleg mentin, which I heard on Milan 93 was, "you
don't expect me to be able to understand what you're saying, do you?"
Which I took as kind of a joke on himself as opposed to a rip on the
audience. And it's true. How should he be able to understand the Italian
audience. if he never took italian, what do you expect from the man? He
is human. They are all human. They make mistakes on stage. They have
character flaws. Let's stop pretending that we're dealing with people who
are demigods.

And Andre' Matos is a very loveable man. We (me, Rogerio and
Cassiano) met him at the DT's Brazil show last Friday. He talked to us (in
portuguese, of course), treated us very good. Not as LaBrie and his show
off pose. Petrucci, Derek, Myung were very kind too. LaBrie could put his
brain to work before he speaks...

what you like... What's the problem if it is commercial or it sold 10

Hey fellow Jammers!
Been a while since i posted anything on the Jam, but after recieving an
E-mail this morning, I just HAD to post about it. Seems like DT is
getting more popular in the good ol' USA. Been reading about all the
radio stations playing BMS, so I figgered I'd join the revolution (to
quote someone else's post) and E-mail Rock 105.3 in San Diego. The
response I got form one of the DJ's today was as follows: "I'll look for
the new Dream Theatre (SHE spelled it that way!!!!) single and see if we
can get it on".
Just out of curiosity's sake, does anyone think she was making a pass
at me? :)
I'll keep my radio glued to 105.3 (even if I have to dig out the
superglue!) and see if I hear it. Whelp, that's all for now.

Was that a jammer I saw last night at the midnight sale at Record
Service here in Champaign, IL wearing an Awake shirt?
Record Service really toyed with my emotions. They had DT under
the new releases for Sept. 16 instead of Sept. 23. Obviously I knew
it was a mistake, but I was hoping they'd follow it up with a second
mistake and put it on the shelves a week early. But it was too good to
be true :( They realized their error.
And to the person inquiring about the Lie CDS a few days ago. I
looked on the web and Alta Mira had them. I e-mailed them and they told
me that they just sent out the last copy. I asked if they'd ever get any
again and they said that it went out of print after a couple of months,
so I'm taking that as a "No." Again, my emotions were toyed with :( But
to anyone interested, Alta Mira said that they do still have vinyl copies
of the Lie CDS. I didn't even know they made vinyl copies of singles.
