LAst night was one very interesting night. I went out to hang out with
friends like any typical day, wearing the same old clothes that I
normally wear. Last night it was an old Waking up the World t-shirt.
But the weird thing was check this one out, 3 people in the streets said
hi to me and commented aboutmy shirt and DT to me! I was like damn.
Trst me guys, I was not at a concert or aclub, etc...I was just hanging
out with friends, first at a diner and then a poolhall, and then a diner
again...I wear this shirt and other DT stuff like 5 other shirts and a
hat almost everyday and almost all the time no one ever says a word to
me and last night 3 seperate people, all strangers come up and talk to
me! It almost felt like I was in the twilight zone or something.
Anyway, it sucks that I'm gay because 2 of them were girls and they were
aruond mya ge and damn, one of them was hot! I was talking to the girl
at a pool hall for like 10 minutes about DT and how she saw them in 1989
and how similiar she thinks they are to QR and her love of all the bands
that I love. It was definitely a real cool night and to tell you the
truth, I love the visablity that DT is starting to get these days! Could
they finally be saying hi to me beasue of the new stuff that's starting
to be played here on the radio? Who knows. I just know that I love it
and hope it keeps up because I'll still be wearing my DT stuff. But for
now, I'll just stay the same wasy that I've been since last night, Dazed
and confused.

No. After I sent the last message, I realized that I wasn't as
clear as I would have liked to be. What I meant was that I like the
original intro to "Status Seeker" better than "Puppies On Acid." I was
saying that I like that general style and mood better than the style and
mood of "Puppies On Acid." My point was that I am perhaps the most
atypical list member who would be one of the most likely to be disappointed
by _Falling Into Infinity_. I'd apologize for cluttering the list, but
since I normally don't post that often, and I take up little bandwidth
compared to many others, I won't.
On a completely different topic: is anybody going to see Yes at the
Orpheum Theatre in Boston on October 18? Does anybody want to go? If I go
alone, my mother will have a stroke (which she almost had when she found
out I went to see Kiss in Providence alone in March). Please send me a
note if you're interested.

Hiya, It's just me, Seth Hatlelid, back on the jam
Fun thing to do with the FII CD booklet: open to page one (the one with
the fuzzy binoculars) now hold the picture up to the light. the people
on the front cover come into view as if you were looking through the
binoculars! Do the same on the back page (with the fuzzy Kevin Moore
penis) and the third man on the posts comes into view clearly and so the
photograph composite is a first person (you th viewer) looking past
someone (fuzzy kevin penis) and looking at someone else (man in back). A
little bit of don't look past me perhaps?
Interesting stuff:
Everyone seems to be comparing FII to HitNF by Queensryche. When I saw
Derek and JP on their clinic tour, Derek tore HitNF to pieces, he hated
it (or so he said because he also said that he hated Load in response to
a question becuase I think that he thought it was what the audience
wnated to here.
About DT selling out.
Derek said that Eastwest hated them and the only reason that Eastwest let
DT have any controll over their own music was that DT was making money
for them and Eastwest had no idea how, so Derek said that they get pretty
much left alone becuase they were making money without any outside help
and EW was afraid to screw that up. So I have a feeling that the new
sound is a progression of DT's sound, not of Shirley's or Eastwest.
About Derek:
When I met him, he was about as nice as they come, very friendly, and he
can wail like no other, bravo. like 'em
About FII: Hated it a first, listened to it about about 70 times strait,
can't get it out of my CD player without going into convulsions. Love it
(except Anna Lee)
About Mustaine:
I also hear Mustaine in KJLB voice (especially in the "can't give a shit"
line) and I love it. I do miss some of the vibrato but I feel that going
without it at least for now is the best way to go. I know a lot of
poeple who don't like prog who liked the music for DT but couldn't get
inot it because of the HUGE vibrato. I think tha they realized that the
vibrato was dating the music and putting people off. I do wish he used a
little of it in a few songs though. AS a side note, Cryptic Writings
(Megadeth) is the best album from these guys in years. In fact, this
album put Megadeth in first place for my favorite band over DT when it
first came out, althou FII has reversed that. I'd heavily recommend this
album to any DT fan, these guys can play their asses of (although David
Ellefson's bass playing has mellowed out too much) and all of the songs
on the album are great, some even have keyboard! I hope the keys become
a permanent addition to the 'deth lineup.

oh yeah, before I forget, I must say...
I am very disappointed w/this cover. The liner notes, the disc itself, all
works together. But the front cover stands out, to me, as pretty boring. I
mean it takes more than just a bunch of infinity references and slightly hidden
messages to be a good album cover, and I don't think this one holds a stick(candle?) to any of the Rush covers or the Division Bell cover. It's too damn placidfor me.

Well, I finally got FII. My god, I'm so pissed I had to wait so long, but
it made the final reward much better. Basically, I don't have a car, and
neither of the 2 music stores on campus had the fucking album (one of which
is an HMV, so I was sure they'd have it... but it must be the shittiest HMV
in the world). So I ended up biking - since the transit system here has
about 5 busses - to a mall 3-4km away today and found a store that had one
copy left. I really miss living in a big city.
Anyway, my reaction: FII FUCKING KICKS
ASS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's different... but MY GOD, Trial of Tears blew me away! And Anna Lee is
a GREAT song (I don't know how ANYONE could complain about it)! Why the
hell isn't James writing more lyrics? And same with Myung. IMO, TOT and
Anna Lee are the 2 best songs on the album lyric-wise. And I usually don't
pay that much attention to the lyrics.
Lines in the Sand of course is awesome too. Although I don't think Doug
Pinnick's voice fits at all... in fact, the whole chorus doesn't really fit
- that kind of ruined it a little, but otherwise it's great. TAMP, Hell's
Kitchen, Hollow Years, Peruvian Skies, and New Millennium are all great as
well. My impression of this album right now is that it's almost as good as
I&W! And even if you were to cut out the songs I don't like (YNM, BMS,
JLMB), the album would still be longer than I&W too.
And James LaBrie... IS THE FUCKING MAN!!! This album is the best he's ever
been, by far! On I&W, I don't think he wrote all the melodies, and was
kind of trying to replicate Chuckie D's style a little. Awake was a bit of
a bad experiment in places, but on FII, he's developed his own style, and
the vocal melodies are incredible. Especially on TOT. And Anna Lee is one
of the most beautiful DT songs ever (probably just behind "Eve"). And what
got into Mike Portnoy's head? He goes totally nuts on some of the songs!
I'll probably be flamed for this, but my only real problem with this album
is the keyboards in some parts. Don't get me wrong, Derek is very good,
and his style offers a lot of things Kevin's didn't, but during a lot of
the instrumental sections, and the heavy parts of the album, it just seems
like there's something missing. On I&W and Awake, on heavy songs like PMU,
TTT, The Mirror, CIAW, etc. the keyboards really complimented the guitar.
On FII, in those same places, the keyboards instead blend with the guitar
(I know others have mentioned this as well). But IMHO, that takes a lot
away from some parts... and makes them just sound like crappy generic heavy
metal (ie. Megadeth, Metallica, or something). The end of PS is a perfect
example, and there are places on YNM and BMS where there seems to be a bit
of a void as well.
But otherwise, this album is great! My first impression of FII is almost
like my first impression of I&W was. Meanwhile, the first time I heard
Awake I didn't like it very much. Awake ended up growing on me and now I
think it's a really good album, although not an incredible one like I&W.
It looks like this album could reach the same status as I&W though. It's
definitely different, and definitely less "prog", but I don't what the fuck
it is - it's awesome!
One other thing: is it just me, or do a lot of the "heavy" parts of this
album just not seem that good? Again this may be due to the change in
keyboardists, but it seems like DT have matured a bit in their songwriting,
and the softer/medium type songs are really awesome. I hope this trend
continues, because I found some parts (the "Metallica/White Zombie"
sounding stuff) to just be very bad. I wish they'd replaced JLMB, BMS, or
YNM with Where Are You Now.
Anyway, this was longer than I wanted it to be, but what the hell... I'm
not going to be able to do anything productive for days, 'cause I'll be
sitting here listening to FII non-stop! Can't wait for MetII!!

Who is your source? I did a little math to see how much KM contributed
lyrically when he was in the band. He wrote 33% of the lyrics. I
omitted TTT and the instrumentals, since everyone contributed equally on
those. It's also funny that in an interview KM admitted that DT was a
guitar dominated band, and that he had to pick his spots to contribute.
Somehow that does not go along with writing 80% of the material.

Pt. 2 is their most prog and intense song and KM had nothing to do with

This makes no sense. Just because you like SDV means nothing in this
discussion. SDV has very few trademark prog elements. It shows KM's new
music style. I think had KM participated more on Awake, it would have
sounded more like SDV, which is 180 degrees from every other song on
Awake except The Silent Man.

Again you are using your opinions about whether you like a song justify
how much input KM had. There is no correlation. It's like me saying SDV
and Surrounded are the worst DT songs. It proves nothing.

It says that DT wanted to be more radio friendly. But there is nothing
wrong with that. If you look at the songs they played at the Uncovered
Show, you will find out that Elton John, U2, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles,
Queen and Journey are influences. Those bands are not considered prog
and they either got or still get radio play. DT was never anti-pop. JP
has said that some members listen to some pop and alternative music.
Please think before writing.

So, I have just got my copy of FII and here is my own review..... When I was listening to the record for the first time I really thought: 'What does this all mean??? Do these guys really want to sell 3mln copies - this is really shit!!!', the album seemed totally xxxxxx for me.... But when a friend of mine arrived and we got to listen to it once again, I really found some interesting stuff there - and now, when I am listening to it for some fifth time - WOW, it's really cool. First of all, I would like to say that the album is really cool, but it is not Dream Theater - at least not what I expected from these guys, and this work can't be compared neither with I&W nor with Awake - it is really different, but still cool. The thing that I really disliked when listening for the first time was that LaBrie's voice is not clear - I mean he used some effects - and he really shouldn't use any - he has a wonderful voice and the songs that he recorded clearly sound much better vocally. Another thing is the BASS - whatever anybody says about Dave Prater (I mean that one can't hear bass on any of his records), but he really put the bass on its place and her it's driven in the very front, and because of this New Millenium sounds a little bit techno-alike (those who like the song, please forgive me, that's just MHO), I mean JM still plays great as he did before, just the bass part is too loud. And in some songs the bass reminds me of Red Hot Chilli Peppers (though Myung plays really better than Flea) - e.g The New Millenium. Drums are also recorded not the way they were on Awake and I&W - the snare is louder, and that also sounds like some alternative. I can't tell for sure about other instruments cause I ususlly play attention to the rhythm-section first of all, and inly then to all the rest. And also the lyrics.... As I wrote to the jam before, if there are any MP's lyrics the album is worth buying - and it really is Mike's JLMB lyrics is just great, so is BMS (I don't really like The New Millenium) - they are much better IMO than all JP's lyrics. And (please forgive me once more) I can say that JLB should not have written any lyrics - as he did on I&W and Awake - it's not really good, though I like Anna Lee's music really. And in the end a few good words for JM - his Trial Of Tears really reminded me of good old Dream Theater - like I&W, but still I didn't like the words much, and the music is just cool.
