Regarding the recent glam thread...glam is horrible music...Glam is
short for "glamor," folks...that should tell you something. (Remember
that Poison song Unskinny Bop? Wonder if those guys are related to
Hanson...ya know, MMMBop....just wondering...) Anyway, glam was about
how much style you could away with without actually having and
substance. Some bands have taken some glam ideas and turned them into
absorbing, interesting, *valid* music, such as Queensryche and DT (WDADU
is very glam-influenced, and Chuck sounds a lot like Dennis DeYoung of
Styx). Sorry, but if I ever hear somebody on my floor playing Grim
Reaper or L.A. Guns, I'm just going to change dorms.

As for those who subscribe to the "analysis = death" school, I humbly
request that you SKIP THE POSTS WITH MUSICAL ANALYSIS. JB's post in 3037
was perfect--"I get more out of it when I analyze it than when I just
play it in the background." IMHO, good music is more like a painting
than wallpaper. You're supposed to analyze it, instead of just banging
your head and whipping out the lighter.

Small amount of DTC: Dave K. noted the "variations on a theme" technique
DT often uses, most noticeably in Learning To Live and Seasons...yup
Dave, that's great stuff, isn't it? It's actually known as "thematic
development" or "elaboration" in music theory, and there aren't many
bands that can develop a theme the way DT does--how long is the intro to
Seasons? Four minutes or so? Essentially, Derek is playing the same
melodic material, but everybody else keeps messing around with the
ideas, and it never gets boring. =)

    Hi jammers!
I wanted to ask if anyone could e-mail me personnaly to give me info
on DT Fan Club with Elliot... I'd like to join, I have the address, but
I don't know if I have to send any specific messages or money to
    subscribe.

Another thin I wanted to say is about the new album, FII. God, I
really don't understand these people complaining that DT has lost their
spirit, that their album is not good at all compared to the others. I
don't agree at all. I'm listening to it right now for the ... time, I
don't even count anymore. It's true that their music is really
different from what it was, but it's not bad. Their music is still
awesome, same for the lyrics. I think that their working some other
sides of their talent they didn't use that much before. I mean, their
going deeper. Listen to it carefully. As a musician (not really
advanced), but a real maniac, I can tell you that their really good.
Also, for those who said that the majesty logo wasn't there anymore,
look a little more then that, cause it's right at the bottomof the front
cover, just down at the intersection of the binoculars circles. It's in
a kind of a shade green.

                                                            Take care all!!!

    S. LaMonica asked about the quote from "Hamlet" at the end of Pull Me
Under which isn't in the lyrics (for some weird reason). It's from one
of his soliloquies, somewhere in Act I, scene iii: "Oh, that this too,
too sullied flesh would melt". DT cuts it off there (I love that effect)
but the full quote is "Oh, that this too, too sullied flesh would melt,
and resolve itself into a dew."

Maybe it's just me, but I always thought Stryper was talented. Sure they
had the image thing going big time back in the day, and they had that
typical 80's sound, but I love those solos and grooves :) I may only be
19, but I am truly a child of the 80's "glam" bands. So shoot me if
Poison was my first tape. I still cling to my roots, I guess.

on their new album. Something about it being a crazy song.

Well, we are almost there. This is really the last week I will be taking
corrections before I send the TAB off to Petrucci. This is the last week
you can be classified as a checker for the project (so let me know).

I have finished up some recommended corrections from fellow Jammers. And
they have been GREAT suggestions. _Most_ of them have been incorporated
into the TAB. A lot of you have seen Petrucci play certain parts, and that
definitely helps. I'm checking some parts sent in by Ernesto Schnack and
Chad Cook (the last ones sent in). Once I finish with them (probably
Tuesday afternoon), I will send them to Kevin Hammer (who has been doing
the web page). Hopefully, he can have them up by Wednesday for everyone to
look over (once more). Then, everyone will have until Sunday to make any
last minute suggestions. Monday morning I send a copy to Petrucci.

That doesn't necessarily mean that I won't still take suggestions. But
then we will probably wait on making any more changes until we've given
    Petrucci time to respond.

I want to thank everyone who has been a part of this. There is _no_ way I
    could have done this myself.

Kevin Hammer has been a tremendous help in making the TAB available on his
web site. We are even talking about doing a Dream Theater Project similar
to the Rush Project at http://cartoon.ecn.purdue.edu/~branden/rush-tab/

I would highly recommend all musicians to seriously think about emailing
Kevin and encourage him in this (not that he'll be doing this my himself,
of course). If you look at the Rush site, it looks massive. But it would
be great to have this for DT.

Ok, here is the web address for the TAB. Remember two things. 1) This is
not necessarily the final version (but it is close). 2) If you want to be
acknowledged as a checker, you _must_ email me.

Also, there have been many checkers that have been added on to the initial
list. We'll see about getting the credit section updated this week as
    well.

    Get the TAB at: http://www.getaway.net/khammer/acos/

Now it's my turn to completely disagree with you. =)
Nowadays DT is, by far, my favorite band, which used to be Metallica
before. BUT, my favorite album of all time is Metallica's "Master of
    Puppets".
            I'm a musician (huh, ok, I try to be =) ), I play the guitar, I can
play MoP almost in its entirety, but only a few parts from IaW. Does
that mean IaW is better than MoP? I don't think so.
I won't begin a discussion about how IaW is far more complex than MoP
musically speaking. But, if complexity by itself was the thing that
counted to rate an album... (I think you see where I want to get to).
What we're facing here is much more personal taste than any other
thing: you prefer IaW, you have your own reasons for that. I prefer MoP,
because it makes me rock more than any other album I have (I love IaW
too, it's there right after MoP in my favorites).

I'm just trying to avoid another one of those stupid threads "which
band is better", and all that stuff that just pisses people off.

    > If I were a member of DT, and some fan mentioned that I&W was "as good
    > as Master of Puppets", I would feel very dissapointed knowing that
    > there
    > are people out there who can't distinguish between a piece of gold and
    > a
    > piece of wood.

I don't think any guy from the band would feel disappointed with that.
I can bet they like Metallica, and also think MoP is a very good album.
And your comparison (gold x wood) is pretty selfish: what we have here
are two pieces of gold: you just take the one you prefer.

Now the request: could you guys who have your MIME/HTML mail enabled
just turn it off??? The only reason that I do not use HTML mail,
personal certificates, and many other things that I could be using is
that my messages to the jam would be all screwed up. I think you could
all do the same, or at least take the time to turn these features off
    when writing to the list.

    >Yep, it is indeed a concept album. It's also slightly progressive if you >ask me.

Yep, Phish IMO, is a lot more progressive than many bands mentioned here, mostly because of the way they approach music.. The are always willing to experiment with different styles, .essing around with rhythm, counterpoint, etc...

    >Now if you've read through this, you must all go out and buy "Junta" right >now! It's Phish's first album, and has many epic progressive songs - >Divided Sky, You Enjoy Myself, Fluffhead... don't be fooled by the wacky >titles, this stuff is awesome.

Oh, I know. I don't own Junta, but have a lot of their other stuff and heard a couple of songs off of Junta. Awesome stuff.

    >the conclusions that i think you all should get from it that the >band,on the comlex of the song, they steped a step BACK,a big step >back! and the bigest step back in this album is the orginality!

How can it be a big step back, if they've never played these styles before? It'd be kinda like falling into infinity... Woah!

It's reasonable that many songs sound similiar to other bands, since they started experimenting with new styles. They've always said they were influenced by this type of music, but their songwriting concentrated on the prog-metal. Now they're branching out, and since it's a 'first step' the influences are going to be more apparent. Sort of like when one starts to write songs altother. It takes time to develop your own voice.

Secondly, I'm glad they moved away from the prog metal, both sonically and visually. I'm really getting tired of that stuff. And I think they needed to kind of, stand out, from the clones they created. That after all, was the downfall of Yngwie.

DDTT: Those 2 guys on the FII cover, looking at each other...they must be thinking "Man, what a dork"

One correction though - HAIRS nor HAIR'S is correct in this sentence." Hair Is" would be right. HAIR'S is a posessive as in "My HAIR's oder is quite fragrant" HAIRS is just plural of HAIR.

Gosh, do I feel better now......

It will be interesting to take note of some of the posts about how bad the new album is and then watch these same people post in 6 months about how much FII has grown on them. I know it will happen. It always does. As a matter of fact if more of the posts were positive reviews and they were all the jammers read, it would probably change a lot of opinions right away. Often a positive review written from a similiar perspective as the artist had when composing will change an opinion dramatically and immediately. RE: Certain famous paintings, plays, movies, books, etc. So how about some more positive reviews jammers.

Yes, I believe FII is a work of art and I continue to peel away the layers more after each listen.

Listen man. I can't even stand to read you're posts from a grammatical view let alone what the contents hold, but I have a couple of things to say to you.

    1. I am SICK and TIRED of you taking up space on the Jam to FORCE you're opinions on others. Telling people that everything you say must be taken as "God's" word is really starting to piss me off. NO-ONE tells me what I think is good or bad music, I believe I can decide that for myself pretty fucking well.

    2. Do you see anyone else taking this to the extreme that you are? I sure as hell don't. You don't like the album, FINE, but to go on and on telling people to listen to it, and you're sure they will agree with you is rediculous. You must think that you're opinion has some profound impact to be saying that. Well here's a little update for you're closed-minded-ass : IT DOESN'T!!!!

    3. Do us ALL a favor and take FII back. Do it right now. Don't even finish reading this post until you do. DT doesn't need "fans" like you. I'll give DT the $18 for the CD you bought, just so they make up from the loss of the sale!

    4. I want you to understand that I can respect opinions and criticism of the band and the album, but when you start to tell me MY opinion, thats when you have gone just a little too far.

I'm not going into my opinions about the album, because I have already stated them. I just want to let you know that you are getting on my nerves, and I'm having thoughts of strangling you with chicken wire. So please calm down and keep MY opinions out of your mouth.

    Thank you.
