Ok..sorry to send this big message to the jam..but i think people should
take this as an example of someone who maybe was dissapointed at some
aspect of FII..but stated his opinion *very* tastefully... I got it
    from alt.music.dream-theater

    it follows:

Well, to tell you the truth I was a little confused too. The album is
a great work . As we all know these guys are really talented, but I was
really expecting more complexity on the pieces themselves. One of the
things that really define DT is their taste for creating a kind of music

that is rythmically complex ( more than what it is in FII ). And a kind
of music that chalenge the listener. The FII albun is certainly good,
but it would never make an impresion and I&W did.

DT are the only band that have awaken the musical tastes of many
listeners and musicians arround the world. Most of DT's fans are
atracted by the surprises that we find in their music. Their time
changes, polyrythmic ideas, melodic richness, and also heavy content.

The new DT album FII is of course a great piece of work and certainly
a tremndous piece of art. But what happens to the non-comertial
material? The musical complexity of FII is not enough for a DT fan.

DT has shown its growth as a band. And FII proves that they are loyal
to their musical style, and their talent is still amazing. It not the
purpose to make a negative remark on FII, but rather motivate DT to
never forget the need of their fans to be chalenged by their music. So,
the making of FII have been a blessing after so long, but now we just
have to hope that in the near future DT will prove they still have more
"Dream Theater" , and give us ( DT fans ) more surprises.

Hi All, this is what you get when you sub to the ytsejam, obviously some of you don't read these sort of things, so here it is, please read it and take note. To the guy hassling D-man, I don't know your name as you don't put your name to your email to the jam, at least have the balls to put a name to you whining drivel.

    Introduction ------------

Welcome to YTSEJAM, the Dream Theater mailing list! This list is for fans of Dream Theater, and will discuss them and any related topics. (Related topics include other progressive metal bands like Fates Warning, King's X, Crimson Glory, Inferno, etc.)

Topics that are considered non-related include religion, politics, abortion, etc. If a non-related thread lasts for too long, the list managers may issue a warning, followed by suspension or expulsion from the list.

Also the list managers reserve the right to reject messages, unsubscribe users, etc. This list is paid for by the managers and it is a privilege, not a right, to be part of it.

NEWS ---- (Make sure to check the date at the top of this file, since this part can go quickly out of date.)

If the digest number makes it look like you missed an issue, you probably haven't--listproc has a bug where the digest number sometimes increments by two instead of one.

DT played some dates in the Northeastern US this month. Reviews for the following dates were posted in digests 1207-1213.

12/27/95 El N Gee, Connecticut 12/28/95 Malibu, New York 12/29/95 Birch Hill, New Jersey

The next DT album is due out in September or October 1996 according to the band.

The rumors of the Ronnie Scott's gig Video Tape (mentioned in Heavy Rock Magazine among others) seems to only be a rumor.

The last official release by the band was the "A Change of Seasons" EP was released September 19th in the US. It contains "A Change of Seasons" (a 23-minute epic which was written during the I&W time frame), and some live tracks from the Ronnie Scott's gig (covers of Elton John's "Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding", Deep Purple's "Perfect Strangers", Led Zep's "The Rover/Achille's Last Stand/The Song Remains the Same", Pink Floyd's "In the Flesh?", Kansas's "Carry On My Wayward Son", Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody", Journey's "Lovin' Touchin' Squeezin'", Dixie Dregs's "Cruise Control", and Genesis's "Turn It On Again". The first 1000 copies of the Japanese version of the EP will contain a coupon that can be redeemed to get a 3" CD of the Ronnie Scott's gig version of Rush's "Tears" (the 3" CDs have reportedly now been sent out).

To get a copy of the Kevin Moore demo tapes (that Kevin has thoughtfully provided to the list) send email to airdance@aol.com and she will direct you to the closest dub site.

Kevin More FAQs (from <airdance@aol.com>) - Yes, Kevin Moore recorded some demos with Rich Kern, but they aren't working together anymore - No, Kevin doesn't have a record deal yet. Okay, Okay

Since I started this silly war over the use of" Hair's" in the lyrics, I will try to end it now. I agree with you Chris, It could be used in that context. I realized what you were getting at after I pressed the darn Send Key. Oh well. I am a pretty good speller most of the time though....

We really should take it easy on the grammer and spelling errors found in the jams, but in no way is it necessary to be forgiving in regards to the booklet in FII. THOSE ERRORS should have been fixed long before they ever made it into our discs. This kind of thing only lends more credence to the theory that this CD was rushed out by East/West. I do not buy into this idea but I have read that many do. Unforgivable, given the amount of time the label had to get this thing out.

    Agreed?

    >As for those who subscribe to the "analysis = death" school, I humbly >request that you SKIP THE POSTS WITH MUSICAL ANALYSIS. JB's post in 3037 >was perfect--"I get more out of it when I analyze it than when I just >play it in the background." IMHO, good music is more like a painting >than wallpaper. You're supposed to analyze it, instead of just banging >your head and whipping out the lighter.

<bows>... I guess we'll play on each other's posts here for a while... Right on! If you don't want to analyze/learn/pick-up-new-things/etc. skip the posts and go on. Personally I love the analysis, because while I'm appreciating 1 aspect of their style at one point, 4 other things happen that just fly by me, and I hit rewind until I gather all the parts going on... then I can FULLY appreciate the music. Analysis helps to expediate, and even enhance the musical enjoyment (no one picks up *all* the nuances immediately, but different people/trainings hear different things in the music, and by sharing those things, I can understand more things from a (for example) bassist's perspective, when a bass player shares something he heard... etc, since as a keyboardist/guitarist I listen for different things and pick up on those things more readily.

    >First of all, there's a FAQ. You're supposed to read it *before* you post >*anything* to the list. Have you read it? Apparently not.

guys, cool it... I know I haven't read the FAQ in a few months, (and I would venture to say that many of the posters on here that did read it originally, haven't done so since they subscribed)... that's no reason to go ballistic... Thank you for so diligently maintaining the YtseFAQ, Your efforts are Appreciated... but you must understand that posts on here are about as diverse as they come... When that little bandwidth-waster (don't remember the name) was posting all those (5 per digest) one liners "DID DT EVER PLAY STAR WARS MUSiC" ,etc... I don't know, but I'd rather have intelligent questions of the Hamlet sort on the JAM. I'd venture to say that the Hamlet question was alot more pertinent to the list.... People forget, and (believe it or not), there are some people out there with only email access (not web)... so just cool down... take it easy, refer them to the FAQ, but let's not resort to namecalling for it.

    >b) so that the rest of the list members don't >have to wade through your bullshit questions.

First off, they aren't bullshit questions. They're merely uninformed. I can understand your point, but for every one that doesn't care for the posts, there's another one who enjoys seeing a newer DT fan with questions that we all (older DT fans) asked earlier in our lives, and doesn't mind at all answering the questions. (by the way, this is not meant to sound derogatory to either of you... just my opinion of the growing trend toward "violent behavior" on the jam.)

    >> (I'm taking a course this semester on natural language >>parsing. Don't > fuck with me about grammar. :) > >Well, okay, I won't fuck with your grammar. How about your >spelling though? Check out your spelling of the work "awkward" >above. Just a typo? Maybe, but those who live in glass houses.. ;^)

given that 'q' and 'w' are one key apart, the typo'd be my guess... but if not...hey, he didn't say he was taking a spelling course... :)

and finally... some closing (deep) thoughts...

The use of abbreviations for DT songs/members/etc. is fine... but for the benefit of those who may not be familiar with other band's or their albums, yet are interested in the material you post, can we refrain from abbreviating non-DT things? Not like it wastes a whole lot of time... (ex. I've still yet to hear the actual title sans abbreviation of the Queensryche 'sellout' album that people refer to). And when I asked what APSoG stood for, I got 15 responses... the best way to avoid it, is to keep the abbreviating to DT.

Just a thought..... Later, Jason (who thinks nazi's suck)

p.s. I lost count somewhere between 214-220 of how many time's FII's been thru my CD player... A nice ACOS/IaW/Awake tempered in here and there really threw me for a loop... (an endless while loop actually). BUT IT'S STILL LIKE THE 1ST TIME!!!! DT ROCKS!!!! If only sex were that good... :)

    Hello, Ytseland.

    Warning: this is long...

Having just recently resuscribed to the list I'm very suprised that there's a lot of interesting discussion going on! FYI, I unsubscribed when people were celebrating the death of the lead singer of Blind Melon...

Anyway, a couple of jams ago someone asked what's the difference between a producer and a sound engineer. Having been an engineer myself for a few years I guess I should sorta know, although I don't live in the States. It should be about the same everywhere, though.

Basically, the producer is there to make sure that the record company's money is well spent and the band doesn't go over budget. He's also the only person who's there through the whole process of making an album, from the rehearsals to recording, mixing and mastering.. He also makes the schedules and things like that. During the actual recording, he is the one mainly responsible (after the musicians, of course) that all the performances are the best they can give.. This is BASICALLY.

I've worked with many different producers, and some of them don't know ANYTHING about ANYTHING.. They just keep screaming at the musicians "MORE EMOTION MORE EMOTION" or other completely stupid meaningless things, and of course they bug me that everything sounds terrible (it hasn't been mixed yet), or Metallica had such and such kind of sounds (they have an 18 month budget for godssakes).

Sometimes they are really nice and say meaningful things like ask the drummer lay back a bit or "let's do it once more from the top, and this time forget everything I've told you". They can also be very involved in the actual engineering, i.e. move mics themselves and look for "sweet spots" in the room etc. My guess is that Eastwest have enough dough to get quality guys like these.

I guess DT just have a relatively small budget, and Kevin Shirley in particular has his own ways of working. Everything I've heard from him is very 70's sounding (Anna Lee could be from Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, IMO). It's all just a matter of taste. In fact, after a few gazillion listens, I'm starting to understand the way each song on FII sounds - they're very different; even different tunings on drums and probably different kinds of snare drums etc. The variety of sounds is incredible, and it still sounds like an album, which is sort of amazing. It's something that's very hard to do.

This post is starting to be as long as your basic 'jam..

VIBRATO! I know a little bit about singing..

Without vibrato, it's almost impossible for a human being to sing long notes in tune. As someone who has trained his ears for quite a long time, it's really terrible to listen to the lead singer of Oasis... Of course there are some people who don't use vibrato and still are quite well in tune, at least Sting and Elton John come to my mind.

About the healthiness of vibrato - there are quite a few ways to do it, the most common ones being abdominal, throat and vocal cord vibrato. The ab one is the only "healthy" way to do vibrato, and it's the one JLB used a lot on I&W. In Wait for Sleep, for example, it's obvious because it's so slow. But when I sam DT live, I noticed that JLB used throat vibrato a lot, which is very bad for the voice, because it requires throat tension to achieve.

    Take care, Timo

Hi, Sorry for shouting in the subject line, but us UK Jammers don't have a lot to shout about. GOOD NEWS - I've just phoned EastWest (pronounced WankWank in the UK) and they confirmed that FII will be released in the UK on the 17th of October (woo hoo - I believe you would say State side). This means that we can finally join in on this crazy love/hate thing that's been happening. I spell checked this. Dave (a UK Jammer).

    Attention, UK jammers!

You shouldn't have much of a problem getting FII on import. Tower (Glasgow) have 6 copies last time I checked . . . but they were charging ukp 17.99 for it! :-(

I got a friend to bring me it over from Greece.
