band, Heathen? Well, if so, I am REALLY looking for a copy of their album
"Breaking the Silence" on CD. Can anyone help out??

    Private e-mail, please. Thanks!!!

    Hey -

A few Jams ago, Mike Bahr referred to LTL being about AIDS? I haven't heard
this one yet... is it broken down in the FAQ? If so, my bad... sorry. If
not, I was wondering if anyone at one point had broken it down line by line
like that dude did with YNM being about commercialism.

Also... recently I read about the last line of PMU being "... too sullied
flesh...". I always thought, and I *thought* that the FAQ had it as "...too
solid flesh...". Does anyone know which is correct? What I'm wondering is
that at some point WAY back, when the question was first asked of the guys,
they said the line, and it was misheard by the listener. Meaning, maybe the
band explained that it was "sullied", but the listener heard "solid" (an easy
mistake, to be sure), and it just grew from there. Just wondering if anyone
    knows for sure...

    Gotta go eat... Bye!

I hate to butt in here, but I'd have to disagree with you here. Obviously, I
can't tell you what the feeling is that the band was trying to convey.
However, the feeling I often get from DT is that they've taken their
ever-so-diverse influences and crafted something new from them which, while it
is unmistakably DT, still sounds like Rush and Yes and Metallica and Sting and
<insert more bands here>. That feeling sits really well with me, because
they're not afraid to say, "Hey. It's all been done before, just not in this
    combination."

Just my 2% of a dollar.

Well, if we get a lot of newbies, I"m expecting a lot of them to ask "Who's
John E. Petrucci?". I think a part explaining what TAMP is about, and its
relation to AD and (possibly) Scarred would be a good idea.

    >What's the deal with society when2 young boys want to wear makeup and look

    Ever heard of Poison? :)

    > For starters, I feel that this album has shown a lot of jazz feel to it.

Agreed. But aside from the sound, there are also parts (the guitar solo for
ToT comes to mind), where instead of just repeating the same riff, the keep
on laying down different chords and modulating...something more common to
    jazz.

    >jazzy approach and feel to the album has a great deal to do with the
    >education of DT's members at Berkeley (a school that is almost totally

ahem. that's 'Berklee'. And according to Ytsejam law #165, paragraph 3, you
must include the phrase "no fucking guarantee" in every post mentioning
    Berklee.

    >2) if someone wants realy bad the tabs for ACOS i allready know 3
    >parts, and with a little will power i'll transcript the rest....

Apparently you missed all of Brandon's updates. It is already transcribed,
in the process of being checked, and eventually will be sent to Petrucci
himself for the official seal of approval.

About Derek's sound... From the beginning of LITS, I'm guessing that his
Trinity (or Prophecy, whatever he uses) allows him to morph between two
patches? That would explain how he switches between the moog-type sound and
the guitar-sound (he even got that muted chunk in there. Woo!). And then,
is his normal solo sound kind of in the borderline between the 2 sounds?
I'm just following what my ears tell me, and wanted one of you keyboard
    meisters to explain it.

BTW, around :50 on LITS...total Vai! Derek kicks ass!!

    later,
    Ernesto

Ok so I have never put a word in on the jam but I have someting VERY
IMPORTANT to say READ ALL of this. If you want DT to get more radio play
and have a number one spot on the charts you will have to call in and
request ONE song like "Burning My Soul" No other songs by them. I was
told this by a friend of mine that is a DJ. She explained to me that if
you request any other songs by them you can actually make them knock one
of their own songs down the charts and prevent at least one of the songs
from making it to No.1 Sound strange? Well put it this way, if they get
one of their songs to No.2 and another one of their songs makes it but
knocks the other song to No.3 then they have a slimmer chance at making
the No.2 one to No.1 You dont have to be a rocket scientist to figure
this one out fellas. I know you all want DT to get as much radio play as
possible and hear as many songs as possible but the coorperate jerk offs
look at one thing and one thing only and that is how many times you
request ONE song. IT IS POSSIBLE to make them get a variety of DT on the
radio AFTER this is accomplished. So PLEASE keep this in mind when you
call your local radio station. The info was given to me by WKZQ@aol.com
if you would like to ask them for yourself. And please if anyone already
knew this then forgive me for the post, I just felt it was my duty as a
fan to tell it like it is. Sad but true folks this is the way it is.

            Hi, you'll all...

You know, today, exactly after a week FII came out, is Alexandre's
Birthday. I know that maybe he is not reading the 'jam as he used to
(since you know, the volume was quite high until yesterday or so), but he
    feels lonely... :-)

So, let's send him some e-mails and make his birthday a lot
happier. His e-mail address is: <lymber@linux.ime.usp.br>.

Anyone here knows of a prog "Happy Birthday" tune that is not in
some weird time signature and/or that has a 10min solo? :-)

[]s with some insane thoughts, Roger... :-)

Stupid question? Maybe over-asked question, but don't you think that's a bit harsh? And PLEASE don't mail the FAQ out to anyone who "does stupid shit" because pretty soon, I'll have more copies than you do... I may have to usurp your throne!

Umm... there must be a mistake... did I actually post something USEFUL to the jam by mistake? I hope it doesn't become a trend. :) Actually, I'm planning on doing a guide for at least one more song, and I would love it if some other people would, so we could have a full album listening guide eventually. Maybe we'd even get in the FAQ... but anyways, if anyone likes this idea, please, two things: 1). call the song before you post, so we don't get 3-4 listening guides for the same song; 2). for songs like LitS and ToT (long tunes) please cut it up into the appropriate number of posts so we don't all go blind (No offense, Damon, you weenie smacker :)

    A couple issues:

Vibrato: I'm not going to claim that I know much about correct vocal technique, but I notice that for many people vibrato is used to cover the fact that they have trouble hitting the note. It seems to me (in my bit o' vocalist experience) that it's a LOT harder to hit some notes (usually higher register) and NOT use vibrato, whereas the opposite is true with others (lower register). My GF has explained similar things to me from her ear training and theory classes... so I would be interested in the proof Steve Z had backing his claim about vibrato being healthy and no vibrato being unhealthy (or whatever it said). For curiosity, not argument. I can't quite see how one is good for your voice, and one is bad...

Production: I am liking the production now, a LOT... I like the changes in overall sound between songs. This is, BTW, my new favorite Dream Theater album.

Arguments: I will do my part to avoid getting into these drawn out arguments on the jam, if they're bugging anyone. I know some of you enjoy reading them, but I don't want anyone crying because mean old Ptacek cluttered up their jam. Likewise, if you disagree with things that I'm saying, consider private e-mail (if it's not an appropriate topic to debate on the jam).

Anyone else think that the coolest guitar line on the whole damn cd is in LitS at about 8:32 (right after "once wee-ad mitt we're dah yin.") How about ToT for vocals (3:08) "I may have wasted all those years, they're not worth their time in tears" That whole verse just sounds beyond ideal-perfect to me. I LOVE the what the whole band sounds there! /me notices a lot of layered parts on the vocals and guitars (sometimes like 3-4 and maybe more guitars going on)... this is going to be an interesting tour!

    Take Care

Nothing wrong with glam if you're in the mood for it. A lot of glam bands were pretty much all flash and no substance, but a few had some true gems buried amidst all the glitter (Vito Bratta from White Lion, Warren DeMartini from Ratt, George Lynch and Don Dokken from Dokken, Mic Michaeli, Kee Marcello and Joey Tempest from Europe, Reb Beach from Winger, Blas Elias from Slaughter, and Paul Gilbert and Billy Sheehan from Mr. Big to name a few).

Besides, the last Stryper album "Against the Law" dropped the yellow-and-black threads, trashed the glam image, and pushed the Christian message so far into the background it wasn't much more than a memory. That album rocks, and rocks hard. Try picking it up and see if you aren't surprised by the crunch and tasteful musicianship. Similar things happened with Van Halen and Def Leppard, except of course that they're still around and the other glam bands I mentioned are gone. (Well, Dokken isn't, but they're fading).

    "Q" inquired:

    >Well, why don't you think of this. Does ACOS sound like ONE song? No, it >sounds like 7 small songs. Does "Supper's Ready" sound like ONE song? >Does "2112" sound like ONE song?

Er, yes, they do sound like one song to me (excepting "Supper's Ready," which I'm not familiar with). That's one of the things I love about ACOS -- leave out any part of the song and it doesn't sound right. The individual parts cohere so well that I just look up after the last notes of The Crimson Sunset and -- look at that! 23 minutes have gone by. I don't like to listen to it if I don't have time to hear the whole thing. So too with 2112 and APSOG.

The exception to my "epic song" listening is Shadow Gallery's "Ghostship," which, although an excellent song, doesn't seem to flow quite so well as the other songs I mentioned. I have less of a problem cutting that one off in the middle or hearing certain parts of it only. Anybody else want to explain to me what I'm missing with this one?

As for the "indices" with APSOG: p'raps they were simply put there so people would know EXACTLY where each part started. Remember the time we spent arguing about where each part of ACOS started till D-Man had pity on us and put it in the FAQ?

    Cheers, Phil

Hey, it's not my FAQ file. It's *our* FAQ file. Yeah, I'm the guy that runs emacs and fiddles with it, but the FAQ belongs to the whole list. And, as such, it exists to serve the list by cutting down on bandwidth.

    > but I am in school, and the > Web has been down for about a week now. All I have is email. Thus, I wasn't > able to check for the Hamlet quote in your little FAQ file.

I hate to sound like you're a moron, but since you have e-mail, you obviously received the "Welcome to Ytsejam" letter. And, as such, I'm sure you read the part that tells you how to retrieve the FAQ by e-mail. (It's right there near the part that tells you that you should read the FAQ before posting, if I remember correctly.)

    > I recieved an > answer from a kind soul in here who didn't have a problem answering my > question.

I didn't have a problem answering your question, either. I answered it in section 6.8 of the FAQ.

    > By the way, I don't believe that my question took up precious > space

It did. Some people pay by the byte.

    > as I contributed a web site for Clockwork if anybody was interested.

And this relates to "Pull Me Under" in what way?

    > I understand that you are maintaining a FAQ file, but personally, I don't > care.

Then stop posting to the list.

    > If I had the time to go on the web, I would, but I really don't care > to look for an answer to something that can easily be answered over this.

What can be answered here, what should be answered here, and what will be answered here are not always the same thing. As a matter of fact, what can be answered here is generally a much larger set of questions than the other two combined.

    > It > is not worth your time or mine to argue over something as insignificant and > petty as this seems to be.

It is absolutely worth my time to argue about this, for a couple of reasons. First, I have spent a great deal of time maintaining this file for the benefit of everyone, and I refuse to have some selfish fuck like yourself whine about not having web access when he's too lazy to retrieve the FAQ. Secondly, you attacked me personally when I called you on a rules violation.

It is clearly not worth *your* time, however, since 1) you're wrong, 2) you're being a dick, and 3) you don't seem to care. So drop it.

    > I will go on with my life, and you will go on w/ > yours. By the way, I don't appreciate having my intelligence insulted. I am > a straight A student at Saint Joseph's University

And I'm a Ph.D. candidate in Computer Science at the College of William and Mary. Wanna have a pissing contest? This is not the forum.

By the way, Mr. 4.0, I wasn't attacking your intelligence. I clearly remember referring to a "stupid ass question," not a "stupid ass person." I don't attack people personally (much), unless provoked. You stepped.

    > and I don't wish to be > deemed a "stupid ass" because I have a question.

Then read the FAQ. That's why it's there.

    > Thank you. Let's just drop it now.

There would be nothing to drop had you followed the rules of the list to begin with. However, if you insist on attacking me personally, while still blatantly ignoring the rules of the list, I will not be able to "just drop it."
