Vibrato is the periodic change of amplitude, periodic meaning in cycles. In
english, it's gooing back and forth between two different volumes. Usualy
one is the original volume of the sound and the second is lower. Vibrato can
be applied to and sound by either phisical means, like when singing or using a
Leslie cabnet, of electronicaly, like a guitar of studio effect. Good
examples of what vibrato sounds like on guitar can be heard in Voices off
Awake and in Black Loung form Anthrax's The Sound of White Noice album.

    Hello Jon,

Dream Theater's album just became eligible to chart this week. If it sells =
enough (and off the record I'm sure it will), it will hit the charts in =
Billboard's October 11 issue. Check it out -- it hits newsstands this =

Thank you for your interest in Billboard Charts.

How right you are! This happened to me... I finally stopped the
cd long enough to get it to my car, where, while humming ToT, i started to
air drum along not remembering I was holding the cd!! It fell to the
ground and got a scratch right in the beginning of PS!!! I promptly ran
to Best Buy, bought another copy and gave the "used" one to my brother. :)

This from Tony's Levin's web page, sorry if this has been posted: >>Well, we finished the rhythm tracks of the project currently titled "Millenium Project" - Mike Portnoy and John Petrucci of Dream Theater, Jordan Rudes of Dixie Dregs -- and me, trying to keep up! (Boy, these guys play FAST! ) Hopefully that cd will be ready for release by the end of the year (it'll be on Magna Carta Records, and I'll put up a note and link when it's ready.) We had some amusing moments, some of the riffs being so fast I must admit I had to punch in my bass parts bar by bar. (no shame!)<<

Not to be picky here...but some "glam" bands who have recently put out albums include:

Motley Crue (who debuted at #4 on Billboard in June, with Generation Swine) Warrant (who put out a live album over the summer) Poison (whose record company put out a Greatest Hits album, with liner notes written by Bret Michaels, and they are currently writing for the next album with a projected '98 release) Slaughter (Revolution) Dokken (Shadowlife) (already mentioned) Night Ranger (Neverland) Ratt (who put out Collage and are currently being courted by Sony)

    I thought you'd never ask...

There are actually 3 flavors of Hamlet that are used today, one of them rarely. In the Second Quarto, it's printed as "sallied", which is an alternate spelling for "sullied". In the Folio, it's written "solid". So this means we have absolutely no idea what James was saying.

So I was watching the Simpson's today. It was the one Halloween episode where Homer sells his soul for a doughnut. And when he signs the contract, a little demon appears with the doughnut on a platter. And this little demon is wearing an apron that says "Hell's Kitchen" on it! A few of the members of DT (especially MP) are Simpson's fans, so that leads me to the conclusion that this is where they got the name. Maybe we can add this to the barrel of questions to be asked for the FAQ.

I just wanted to say that most labels (especially the majors) don't accept unsolicited material, meaning material that they haven't asked for, meaning random people sending stuff in. A&R people mostly rely on recommendations from people they trust in the industry (managers, lawyers, coworkers, etc); people who have a proven track record with them. And even in these cases, they are still flooded with tapes. So it stands to reason that they just physcially don't have time to listen to something without anyone's recommendation. If you send it in just off-the-cuff, chances are you will get it returned to you, unopened. Whether this is right or wrong is another issue. If youy have any more questions about this kind of stuff, feel free to e-mail ME privately (how's that for irony).

Does anybody notice that in the end of You Not Me, there is a faint voice in the background?? It sounds like sampling of some sort. If anyone knows what this is, please let me know. Furthermore, I totally agree with what a lot of people are saying about Derek. He does bring a rather jazzy feel to DT. A very welcome addition in my opinion! In one sense, I like him better than Moore in that he experiments with his sounds more. Moore is a better keyboardists though, so don't jump all over me. Anyway, good to see that we could put our differences aside Merlo....by the way, why does PMU end so......just kidding :) Stephen La Monica

After someone posted here about Derek sounding like Purple's Jon Lord on "Just Let me Breathe"... Wow! I took a better listen, tooking care to listen the keyboards, and it's there!!! =) It sounds exactly like Jon Lord! =) Also, if you haven't listened the words "Falling into Infinity" in the album (yet), just turn the volume all way up in the very 1st second of "Burning my Soul", it's there, almost unlistenable. =) Thanks for one jammer for that one too! >I ordered FII from a mail order company called CDX based in Cardiff. I >ordered it on Monday morning (22/9) and received it Friday morning >(26/9). The cost was only 13:99 UKPounds INCLUDING postage ! - probably >less than you're going to pay in HMV or Virgin for the UK version. > >CDX phone no. is 01222 843604 and web page is http://www.cdx.co.uk/ > >Remember, order before lunchtime Monday - get it on Friday ! Tell them I >sent you ... I MIGHT get a discount (there again I might not !).

UK jammers may be interested in purchasing FII from CD Universe (www.cduniverse.com) or CD Now (www.cdnow.com), US internet CD retailers. These places are large and reliable and I have used both in the past. I generally find CD Universe to be cheaper for small orders.

One copy of FII from CD Universe costs $US12.95, with $US5.99 shipping (standard air mail, 5 -10 days) for the first item. Shipping for additional CDs is $US1.50. This equates to a total of around 11.72 english pounds to order a single CD air mail, or 20.66 pounds for two. You can of course pay extra for quicker shipping. I find the air mail option takes around 6-8 days (quoted at 5-10 days by them) to reach me in Melbourne, Australia - I imagine shipping to the UK would almost certainly be quicker than this. For aussies reading this, the australian shipping cost is $US7.49 with each additional item costing $US1.75.

Hope that helps! Australian CD prices are very high, so these kinds of prices are attractive, but the shipping cost tends to cancel out any saving unless you buy more than one. So, in Australia, internet buying is best for bulk orders or hard-to-get CDs. FII apparently wasn't getting a local release in Australia, so I ordered two copies from CD Universe weeks before sept 23 and they were shipped on sept 22nd, to arrive on the 30th here. You can do this with any new release - order it before the US release date, and it will be shipped the *day before* this date.

When I was thinking about buying from overseas vs. buying locally, it got me thinking. If an album DOES get a local release, could people who buy mail/net order from the US be jeopardising the chance of a local tour by that album's performer? I imagine that band managers decide to have the band tour a particular region/country only if local album or single sales are strong. Any comments on this by people who know the music industry (i.e. not me!)?

Still hoping that one magical day there could be an Australian DT tour,
