Hi, jammers!!!
I was listening to my FII for some uncountable time and JLMB was playing -
teh moment about eMpTyVy - and something got me??? This was actually
Derek's style and his sound - I though: "Man, what does it remind you of??"
- Sure, that reminds me of Jon Lord from Deep Purple - I mean the sound is
nearly the same and the style is very much alike... Just compare with any
DP album...
Maybe that's because Derek also plays KORG, but I don't think that it's the
instrument only.
Does anybody have any ideas about who influenced Derek most of all????
I do really think that was Jon...
And one more thing - when Petrucci was talking about the stuff he did when
guitar and keys play the same melody, I guess I also heard that on DP's
songs, the best example is Cascades - check it out.
Thanks for reading the stuff.....

I would like to take the time to apologize to Merlo. I understand where you
were coming from with the FAQ, and it is very useful. However, I don't fell
(oops, I mean feel) that it is necessary to say "dumb ass....read the FAQ"
Had you taken the time to say, "Oh, that is in the FAQ, here is the address
in case you deleted it...hope this helps" I would have been more than happy
to go there. I just want to apologize and hopefully you can be more under-
standing of others. With this out of the way.....
Has anyone checked out the CLOCKWORK web page www.netti.fi/~japi/ I suggest
every prog fan checks it out. They are an incredible prog band, with some
really innovative music. They are not just a rehash of all prog elements.
Definitly worth checking out

Well, I don't claim to be a keyboard meister, but I'll give it a shot.
As may know (or not), in most simple keyboards you have a DUAL option,
what means one sample layed on top of the other. Now, in advanced
keyboards (Like the Prophecy and the Trinity are) you have an option to
change the mixing of the two samples in real time (usually with
after-touch - that means press the key again while it's pressed) or with
the joystick.
I'll bet those sounds come out of the Prophecy, because it's used mainly
for analog-type samples.
> BTW, around :50 on LITS...total Vai! Derek kicks ass!!

Vai indeed, although it reminded my Stariani's "Flying in a Blue
Dream"....
>From a personal view, I like Moore's technique with analog sounds better
than Derek's. Compare the key solo in "Light Fuse an Get Away" to the
one in "ToT"... Derek is way more agressive than Moore.
So, my point is: Moore uses the analog sounds (also called "leads")
better, while Derek is the master of hammonds and jazz/blues/rock piano.

Hi All....
Just noticed something very strange:
DT released a 23-min song on September 19th '95
And then they released a new CD on SEPTEMBER 23rd '97....
Very strange, don't you think?

Actually, the "too too" is correct. It was the "solid/sullied" thing that we
were debating. Guess I'll change that when I update again.

I recently had a deep rooted conversation with my buddy Rick about the
influences on new album, FII.
For starters, I feel that this album has shown a lot of jazz feel to it.
Specifically the keyboard parts that DS added on this album, they were
more fluent and "bouncy" as opposed to KM's straight forward approach.
Both were good, but I enjoy the new style more.. I think that this new
jazzy approach and feel to the album has a great deal to do with the
education of DT's members at Berkeley (a school that is almost totally
influenced by jazz, it's known that they educate with jazz as the main
interest)
Also, the grooves on this album tend to be more, well, groovy. I guess
that comes with time.
I feel a huge Rush influence on Trial of Tears and some on New
Millenium.
Peruvian Skies' guitar riff in middle (the heavy part) seems a lot like
a Metallica sound, maybe not the riff but the heavy sound feels like the
sound Metallica acheives.
Hollow Years, is a great straight forward song. I really enjoy this
song.. it moves, and has a great emotional feel to it, incidently the same
feel I get when I listen to Trial of Tears (i.e. "It's raining...")
As for BMS and YNM, I still have yet to find an influence. YNM, seems
totally different from the rest. BMS, is darker than the other songs and
doesn't even seem to fit the "tone" of the album, although a great song.
Hells Kitchen I consider part of BMS (considering it was yanked out of the
middle of it)
TAMP is jazz influenced. I can feel the jazz in it when I listen to it.

-------------------
Being a Shakespeare afficionado (okay, so I'm taking a course in
Shakespeare currently, and we just finished Hamlet - big f'n deal)
there are two versions of that line:
"O that this too too sullied flesh would melt..."
AND
"O that this too too solid flesh would melt..."
Difference? Sullied = stained, tarnished, blemished.
Solid = duh...solid. Anyways, the original version was "sullied",
but in the First and Second Folios of Shakespeare's works, the
word was changed to "solid". My professor said that a good saying
that corresponds to this is "All that is solid is sullied." and it
applies
to Hamlet nicely. Okay, that's enough for Hamlet today class.
(Mind you, I may have the versions mixed up and "solid" might be the
original...but I think I have it right.)

Nope - I cranked up the headphones and I don't hear anything in relation
to
what you are talking about. I hear the breathing at the beginning and

No, it wasn't necessary to phrase it that way, and for that I apologize. I
was having a rough morning, I suppose, and I tend to take my rough mornings
out on stupid people that... oops. :)
What I mean to say is this. This list is my extended family. People that try
to bring dischord into any of my families generally tends to get the shit end
of the stick from me. With the new album out and (hopefully) more
subscribers, I know that I, personally, don't want to have to remind all the
new people that there is a FAQ, that it's at such and such address, and that
you should read it. I would much rather read about more cool shit that people
found in the booklet than have to redirect a PMU question.
(By the way, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have gone so ballistic if it were
*anything* but the PMU question. Good thing you didn't ask if your CD was
messed up because the track ends so abruptly. Grrrr! :)

Apology accepted, another offered, and understanding of others? Get real! :)
OK, NEW SUBSCRIBERS SHOULD READ THIS PART. Welcome to our family. We're nice
people, and we stay that way if everyone follows some simple rules. First
rule: Read the FAQ before posting. Address below.
If you ever want to read the FAQ, can't get to the web, and can't get ax.com
to mail you a copy, let me know, and I will mail you a copy.
Next rule: Respect earns respect. (I forget this one myself sometimes.)
Final rule: There are other rules, and they generally follow common sense.
If you're not sure, scan the FAQ. If you don't see it, then go ahead and ask.
Now, let's get back to listening to FII.

Hi Jammers!
I discovered a printig error at the FII lyrics that you may already have
noticed, but, there it goes:
at the "Peruvian Skies" lyrics you can read
"I'm taking all of this time with me when I go"
But, actually, LaBrie sings:
"I'm taking all this with me when I go"
Well, I just like to know in which of the sentences Petrucci was thinking
when he worte the song.. :)

Just some good news (especially to all "old-school" DT fans): Petrucci said
in a recent Guitar World interview that Metropolis Part 2 would hopefully be
recorded soon and released on an EP. WOOHOO! He also said that DT fans that
liked their more proggy stuff should really dig it. What this means is 25
minutes of insane, progressive, technical, in other words good ol' DT music!!
Hopefully this pleases all the FII bashers! Personally I think FII is a
great album for the most part. FII has it's share of technical rhythm
changes, but they're just not as obvious as on I&W, etc.
P.S. - Petrucci interview was in the November issue of GW.

Don't be too quick to change it. I have two separate copies of Hamlet that
both use "Solid." And it sounds more like "Solid" in the song, and "Solid"
seems to make more sense given the following line, "[would melt] Thaw, and
resolve itself into a dew"
But maybe you should point out that some editions of Hamlet say "sullied."
