    Hello all!

I was just listening to HitNF from Queensryche when I noticed something....
In "Hero" (track 8) the chorus is:
"I'm in the big machine. My next hero's calling.
Who knows what he may bring to me?"
Now, on FII, in JLMB (track 9) there is:
"The big machines take care of you..." (You should have this memorized by
now.. Test next week :} )
Could this be a crack at Queensryche? Opinions (nipples) anyone? (ya like I
needed to say that :} )

    ~Lisa
(BTW, I like HitNF, but I LOVE FII... I think my cd is getting warped from
    continual play.)

    OK everyone.

I want you all to pretend for a while that you've never heard of Dream
Theater, nor have you ever heard any of their music. Pretend a friend just
gave you FII and said, "Hey man, you've gotta check this cd out, it's
    pretty good."

Now listen to FII straight through in its entirety. I think its then
that you have to say, "Hey, this is some of the best music that's been
written in a long time, especially compared to most of the crap that's
out there, and this is an awesome band."

My point is that this cd should be listened to and reviewed based on its
own merits, and not in relation to anything else, including previous DT
music. You're setting yourself up for disappointment if you listen to
FII with an "Images and Words frame of mind" or an "Awake frame of
mind". This is true for listening to any cd by any band as well.

As we've all figured out by now, FII is different from there previous
work, and that is what I think make's this cd even more special. The
diversity of this music proves them to be even more talented than I had
already believed them to be. Musical diversity is a trait that I think
some of the best bands of all time have possessed. Queen is a perfect
example. They routinely ran the entire musical spectrum in one album.
If you don't already have "News of the World", go buy it. Then listen to
"Sheer Heart Attack", "Sleeping on the Sidewalk", "Who Needs You", and
"My Melancholy Blues", and then realize it's the same band making all
these songs. Because of this diversity, their music reached more people,
and from a musical standpoint, one must appreciate the ability to play
    various musical styles well.

Dream Theater now shows this ability better than they ever have before.

So take the music on FII for what it is on its own, and not in relation
to anything else. I'm happy that this cd doesn't sound like their
previous cd's. To think that this band has made music as diverse and as
awesome as on WDADU, I&W, Awake, and FII, makes them that much more of an
incredible band. Don't worry, we'll always have Metropolis Pt. 1, LtL,
Scarred, ACOS, etc., and we can listen them whenever we want! Nobody can
take that stuff away from us! But now we have a whole new dimension in
DT to enjoy and appreciate. Sure, FII has its imperfections, and there
are things I don't like about it, but most have that has already been
discussed...in a fair amount of detail.

So if after trying my little psychological experiment, you still don't
like FII for whatever reason, that's fair enough. Besides, Metropolis
Pt. 2 is just around the corner...

I hate to burst your bubble on this, but Hell's Kitchen is a neighborhood of New York City, on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. (Maybe it's where the recording studio is, I dunno.)

Actually, Hell's Kitchen is a section of New York City. Apparently, Avatar Studios (formerly The Power Station) is located on the Western edge of Hell's Kitchen. I've only been to NYC once...so I'm not familiar with the area. Is that in the Brooklyn area?

Being quite poor these days, I dropped by my local Barnes and Noble to sit and read the DT articles in the new magazines. I found a great (albeit, short) interview with the whole band in Guitar (for Practicing Musicians). I never realized that previously during their recording process, the band had very little interaction. I knew that they recorded each of their parts separately, but I didn't realize that they didn't really work together much. Of course, they didn't go into the studio until they had played the songs together hundreds of times, I'm sure. Still, it gives me even more appreciation for the album knowing that it was a positive experience for the band.

I also checked out the Metal Blade article as well...very impressive, and nice photos. I like the way they had a copy of a Theater of Dreams 'zine next to the Fix for '96 time schedule. I'm going to have to subscribe even if I can't understand the text. ToD looks like a top notch fanzine. No offence to DTIFC...(cough! COLOR!)...at least the content is good.

I'm sure for anyone who's heard CiANITG (Caught in Alice's Nine Inch Tool Garden for the acronym impaired), you recognize the music behind the beginning verse of New Millennium...yet I haven't even seen a mention of it here. I'm sure that I missed it between that initial onslaught of "FII Sucks" posts that flooded the 'jam after last Tuesday. Kinda funny, even though he's singing a different melody, James does kinda stick to the CiANITG vocal sound on NM...at least that initial verse. I love it. Everything about the vocals on this album impresses me thoroughly. I love the lack of heavy vibrato (which is not only volume "wavering", but sometimes pitch changing as well) this time around. I still love the old stuff...but James' vocals on FII are definitely more accessible. Hell, my girlfriend, who has put up with my DT fanaticism for over 3 years, even admits that she can "tolerate" most of the CD (exception TAMP and YNM because of the choruses)...and she HATES Dream Theater. There is hope yet....at least it'll make long road trips with her a little more tolerable if I can play FII...I&W was strictly forbidden, punishable by long term celibacy.

Do we have anyone on here born before 1965? Just curious if I was the only older DT fan on the jam.

I've been sitting here all night learning Peruvian Skies...seems to help a lot to have the album AND the JP clinic tape. It's amazing how a seemingly simple song can turn out to be much more complex than you realized. Now I'll have a new "Calling all DT fans" to play at Guitar Center....either that or "Sir, would you please put that down?".

    Life is good.

I too watched that episode, and noticed the hell's kitcken on the demon. Mmmmmm, forbidden doughnut. Although, the members of DT do enjoy the Simpsons, I think the name may have originated from that section of Little Italy (or somewhere), that's called Hell's Kitchen. Someone help me here, I know I saw it in one of those mobster movies. Just can't remember which movie . . . ahh losing my memory. Anyway, there's a neighborhood somewhere in NYC that's called Hell's Kitchen. That's my guess, but who knows. Actually the band does, but we have too much fun taking guesses about their lives and lyrics and anything else we can.

Hell's Kitchen is a low-income neighborhood in NYC's west side. It's the setting for Sleepers, a kick ass movie for the whole family to enjoy. Well, not the whole family.

In fact, it's where Matt Murdock (Daredevil to you ignoramusi) grew up.

    Hey!

Rockin' 101.7 WHMH here in St. Cloud, MN is currently playing FII in its entirety. This station has always been supportive of DT and play them a few times a day, albeit not as much as Matchbox 20 and bands like that. At least they don't have quite the Van Halen and AC/DC complex most "hard rock" stations have. Please check out their web page at www.rockin101.com and send them a note of thanks for playing the album and supporting DT. Great stations like this must have our support!!
