GREAT BALLS OF FIRE! It's great to see Mike put his $.02 in once in a while...People out there... THINK!!! Yes, DT playing 2hrs, sometimes more each night is a treat in itself. BUT if they open for a band or two who's fans might have never heard a DT song, never mind one or two, and LIKE them after seeing them play, then they might (or for that matter, SHOULD), go out and buy their CD's. Hint hint... More sales = more$,which = MORE STUFF FOR US!!, which in turn might mean playing BIGGER VENUES, etc.,which will give us even more of a rush when we see them. We'll always have our 2 + hrs of live DT whenever they play out, but if more people get a chance to see them, it just means that there will be more fans in the future. It won't just be through word of mouth, those people will have caught the DT experience, too. So, go easy on them for a short while, and let's see what the outcome will bring to us and the band,etc.....

Refering to John Coltrane as "just like a really good sax player" is kinda like saying Mike Portnoy is "just a really good drummer" or Stephen Hawking is "just a really smart guy"! Coltrane is utterly mind boggling! Listen to "A Love Supreme" and you'll get what I'm talking about. lata chris

Sorry for being so uncultured. :) >Moo. > John Coltrane is one of those players that, if you polled all saxophone players worldwide and asked them to name their top 5 sax players, Trane would be mentioned in the top two or three on 99.9% of the lists. Interestingly enough, he's been highly influential for many great guitar players, too. Trane had a rare combination of technical ability, soul, and improvisational creativity. He had a massive, awesome tone. He was at the forefront of jazz when it was *the* music, when rock was still just dance music. Trane altered the direction of jazz in the early and mid 60's by his very presence. Shall I go on? (OK, OK, I won't ;)

I am a Metallica's fan and I don't like the new concept of this group. I expect to hear the Metallica of twelve years ago as the Master of Puppets album because it was their real concept. The Load and reload album is an alternative style like a mixture of soundgarden and alice in chains. I don't think (in my opinion) that Metallica's music is a result of music evolution, I rather think that is a whim of the group to probe another music style. I hope it is.

I mean from side to side... like from one end of the fret-wire to the other. It's thinner in that respect than the average, and I don't think the neck is actually thicker in the way you're referring to either, but I could be wrong. You have to keep in mind that I'm comparing to the RG series, and the Universe... Ibanez does make a few different necks, and the RG, the USA Custom and the USRG are not all the same necks.

    > Which suits me - my ideal guitar neck would have the thickness of a Les Paul > 1960 type neck (sue me). I do't think the thickness of the neck has anything to do with intonation at all. Further, how much the wood gets screwed up because of temerature changes depends on the TYPE of wood, and the craftsmanship/design, not how much wood there is. You should know that.

    Hey there,

On Rock Discipline, JP talks about his multipin system which connects his pedals and stuff to his rediculously large rack system. Methinks that that is a rather natty idea. Has anybody had similar thoughts? Has anybody actually done anything similar themselves? It wouldn't be that dissimilar from making a small multicore.

Don't keep those thoughts and ideas locked inside of your head! What do you guys reckon?

Ben Folds Five is an awesome band. They're not prog (which, as we know by now, doesn't mean they're not good). Picture a younger, more cynical Billy Joel, and you have an approximation of what BFF is all about.

And "Brick" is a beautiful song. -d

I wonder if Ben Folds is a Kevin Moore fan -- he's definately got that piano ballad thing down -- love Brick (though Underground is still my fav song -- "It's industrial!" >clink!< "Work it underground!" -- turns Nine Inch Nails into cabarre night in Vegas)

How come everyone's favorite LTE song is "Universal Mind?" I dunno, it kinda bugs me, except the jam part in the middle, before the guys follow their turnery return to the initial theme. It's very...80's...glam. I dunno, maybe I'm not into glammy music, but, I find "Three Minute Warning" and a lot of the other songs to be better. My friend said, upon hearing the song, "it reminds me of Van Halen, and I'm not an expert on music." (she liked TMW)

A random query: there's a pause in "cut" 13 towards the end like the band stopped, but then decided to go on...anyone know whether this was deliberate, a studio fuckup, or the guys just almost ended but then went on...?

Ah well, this is NOT a gripe...I just find it odd that a lot of people seem to be saying the same thing, and I don't agree. Well, whatever, I guess I just suck or something.

I also wanted to relate a depressing story to you musicians, and even non-musicians, out there. IT SUCKS TO BE A GIRL WHO PLAYS THE GUITAR!!!!!!! I was out on the small outdoor stage on our campus green this past weekend, accompanied by 2 other, more experienced guitarists, and a bassist. All of them were male except for moi, but I've known these particular guys for over a year, so I figured it would be fun. We were going to jam. Shah, whatEVER. So I set up all my gear, and we all warm up for a minute or 5, then the bassist tells one of the male guitarists (this one is very into death/black metal) to play some songs, so that guitarist does. The OTHER male guitarist (he's into punk/ska) starts playing some random stuff completely and utterly different from the death metal kid. SO I sit there, not knowing what either of them are playing. They're not jamming, they're deuling. La la la. I sit there some more. I'm stuck in Eb with my mostly-busted bridge, so I tell them to tune down a half step.... They don't. Then the death metal kid does, and he and I start playing Seasons In The Abyss. Now that was cool. But them the OTHER kid plays the Bosstones over us. I pretty much stopped playing after that. They start playing their own separate stuff again, and the bassist leaves for a while to help his girlfriend fix her car. Yeah, so I sit there summore. Whee. I get fed up enough to lay down a nice little blues riff to encourage them to jam over that, since they're so hyped up on shredding and crap. They ignore it. I play Peruvian Skies for the hell of it, but I'm just not as cool as them because I'm not shredding. Okay, so I can barely shred, but even though they've been playing a lot longer than I have, you'd think they'd enjoy playing enough to both shred over a nice little bluesy lick. No. Argh. They continue their crap. I get pissed off enough to pack up all my gear (2 pedals and a massive amp, and the guitar). I get ready to leave and they start playing "Fade To Black," which the death metal kid KNOWS I like and know all of. The sheer cruel irony of it pissed me off so much that I had to go kick a wall in my dorm. Yay.

So that's my depressing little story. I'm sure many of you out there jam with other people all the time, but I hope you have more success. It sucks being a chick who's into heavy and complex music. I doubt I'll ever jam again.... Granted, they were a lot better than I was, but they made NO EFFORT WHATSOEVER to even play together (they were about equal in ability), let alone play with me. It was so fucking dysfunctional. ARGH! I didn't play my guitar until yesterday because of all of that crap. I mean, I'm not a great guitarist--I'm not even good--but jeez...I keep thinking I really want to give up after things like this happen. (But I did just order a new bridge!)

APOLOGIES FOR THIS LONG RANT! :( I guess I'll have to take over Ptacek's job for an hour, huh? ;) Life sucks, and mine is worse than average too often....

    Hi jammers.

I just came back from a 2 and a half weeks break. I was in studio during that time with my band Superior to record our 2nd album and I can promise you quite a few nice new songs, I think. :)

I read through the jams of the last 2 weeks and there was that "Superior" thread. I'd like to clear that up why we called our band Superior. All the members who are in this band had some band projects before Superior was founded. When we thought about a name for this band, we considered that we wanted to do something better than we did before, something superior. And there was the name. It has nothing to do with feeling superior to anyone else or some bullshit like that. It's just a quite personal thing.

    Thanks for your time.

    Bye
