Isn't this an absolute blast? I've been to a few open jams (and any of you
Boston people who are interested in hitting one, Johnny D's in Somerville
has a SMOKIN' blues jam on Wednesdays), since I was playing in a blues band
for about a year and a half, and there's so much to learn from just
watching and playing with people you've NEVER met before. Highly educational
for musicians of any skill level, and something I totally recommend.

Some quick thoughts on Metallica, regarding a thread on the subject
    recently:

Metallica has changed...big time. They may not be "alternative" now, as
opposed to "metal" years ago, but they are a much different group of guys
from the ones who penned songs like "Creeping Death," "Battery," and
"Disposable Heroes." I personally think that "Load" and "Re-Load" are
complete piles of crap, but that's just my opinion and I'm not knocking
    anyone else for liking them.

In a time when true metal or progressive rock is as welcomed as a foot
long turd in a wedding punchbowl, I believe we should be focusing
ourselves on the bands who carry their torch of individuality high, not on
bands who try to change their sound to fit the times. Hail Dream Theater.

I have to agree with Chris about Penn State's "Moving On" - it would be an
absolutely incredible show and a LOT of exposure. I personally know about
25 friends who are DYING to see DT but have not had a
chance. I was hoping maybe the Crowbar downtown (equivalent to New
Haven's Toads place in size but with better acoustics and attracts many
major acts) would grab DT on this last tour but my wish was not true.
Moving on would give DT incredible exposure at a campus where there are a
lot of prog-heads. Unfortunately the place where Moving on is held is
kina under construction.. but who knows :) I can only dream. At any
rate, I am willing to bet there are close to 4000 die-hard dream theater
starved fans here in this one square mile! (NOT an exaggeration!)

Stupid guitarists! Ok, so I fancy myself a guitarist, but I think this is a
pretty typical situation. I really don't like jamming with *any* other guitarists, much
less two others. Unless you have some real chemistry with the other guy/girl, it tends
to be two people trying to fill the same role instead of trying to compliment each
other. These guys may have been good guitar players, but they sure as shit weren't good
musicians if this was their idea of jamming; it sounds like each of them had an
extrememly inflexible idea of what the guitar's role should be going into the 'jam' and
weren't listening to each other at all. Find some other types of instrumentalists to
jam with; in my (very limited) experience this tends to be much more productive. And
when you find them, send them to me.

Shouldnt you take this to a Metallica message group? I was going to say
you should be drawn and quartered for bringing up this topic when it has
been silent for almost a few months now, but that would be a bit lenient,
    dont you think?

This was none other than the Rudess/Morgenstein Project. Richie and I were
lucky just to get to the Chance at all that night, and we got in literally
about 5 minutes before DT took the stage. But we caught RMP two nights later
in New Haven, and the blew the roof off the dump.

Just remember that there's more to musical talent than being able to play by
oneself. A musician that can't cut it when there's other musicians around may
as well give up. Tough it out, Deed. You're bound to find someone worthy of
    your skills and patience.

My guess, especially if your drummer friend was "all excited", would be
that it was the Rudess/Morgenstein Project (after all, how many
drummer/keyboardist combos can there be out there?). RMP is Jordan Rudess
(who was considered briefly as KevMo's replacement), and Rod Morgenstein,
formerly of the Dixie Dregs and *gasp* Winger.

(Don't jump on my back, Richie, I love Winger too). :)

Ok, I've been to a couple of these before. This actually takes place on an
outdoor lawn behind the school's student union building. Best part is, its free!
Some other headlining acts in the past have been Helmet (when they were hot) and
    Richie Havens.

    > Well folks, there's over 40,000 students that go to

Well there's definately a 40,000+ student population, but obviously only a
fraction of that amount actually attends this festival. Seemed to me that maybe a
few thousand, at the most, were there the last time I was in the audience. Still, I
must agree that this would be a great show for DT to headline. This is a free show,
its not in a club so its all ages, and the audience is full of basically non DT
fans. MP was just talking about ways to appeal to new audiences, well there ya go!
Its probably a bit late to book this years show (this thing should be coming up in a
few weeks I believe?); but hey, headlining next year's show would just be awesome!

Heh, this happened to me the last time I wore my Awake shirt around campus. One guy chased after me (literally) after a class and told me how much he liked DT, and said he also listened to Queensryche. Bad part was I never saw the dude again. Later on the same day I was walking from another class and some guy commented on my shirt as he passed me on the street. Strange part of all this is I now live in the south, where prog just ain't that big. I guess we're just taking over the music spectrum!

I'm just poking my head in. I'm just back from two weeks in England (where my S.O. lives...sigh) and Ireland and came back to 1650 pieces of mail and far too many of these damn digests. Work's been crazy, which means I simply did a lot of scanning, but....

Coltrane is awesome. Absolutely. But all this advice to "just go and listen to 'A Love Supreme' and revel in the glory that is Coltrane" is a little iffy. It's genius, absolutely. But it isn't exactly the most accessible piece of music in the world. If you're not fairly jazz-literate (or, at least, used to listening to harmonically sophisticated music), you may be better off starting with something like "My Favorite Things," which, actually, is probably my favorite bit of Coltrane (I guess I'm not that harmonically sophisticated). "A Love Supreme" is brilliant, but it's often brilliant in ways that one has to have appropriately developed ears to really enjoy.

    My word of advice...

I have to say I'm thrilled to see a new webpage about my favorite band, The Spice Girls. Especially one put together as well as Under a Spicy Moon. Thanks for this new site! The Spice Girls are WAY more deserving of it than those Dream Theater chaps.......

Okay, anybody who didn't recognize that as sarcasm needs help. Seriously though, this was HILARIOUS! A great cheer up! In a related note, the Yngwie thing was really funny too. The part about Dunkin' Donuts almost had me on the floor!

DT content: Don't you guys think it's about time for a "sequel" to LatM? I'm telling' you, I'd give a kidney if DT released another live CD of this caliber. Especially if we get some tunes like UaGM, Voices, Scarred, Peruvian Skies, Innocence Faded, The Mirror, ToT, etc. Thank would be unreal. <<<<< MIKE P., ARE YOU LISTENING? :-) PRETTY PLEASE >>>>>

    Later, - Joe D.

Blah, blah, blah, blah. Yeah, well I'm stuck here in *Antarctica* and has DT been here ....... fuck NO !! What do you think we are down here, penguin fuckers ??
