I'm not normally a fan of religious-type music, but these guys are
flat-out amazing. Their lyrics are vague enough not to be heavy-handed,
but are well written nonetheless. Plus, they are probably some of the best
songwriters to come along in recent years. Catchy, thought-provoking
stuff. Although, I have to recommend their debut over "Much Afraid." Their
debut is one of the best albums I have ever bought in my life. They were
using drum loops on that one, which I like better (odd, since I'm a
drummer). Something about the combination of acoustic guitars and drum
loops blew my mind.

Of course, MY ideal tone isn't YOUR ideal tone and it sure isn't THAT DUDE'S ideal tone. However, there can be certain elements that contain a somewhat universally IDEAL tone. So here are a few elements of "tone". I have included a couple of my "opinions", but I would like to know others opinions on the elements of "tone".
1) The Guitar: a) Woods Body - I like a 2 piece guitar. One piece of Mahogany with a somewhat thick Rock Maple top (1/4" or so, however I am bad at estimating) for the body. NO PAINT JOB. Just some finish for protection. No book matching. Looks are irrelevant to tone. And no "quilted, birdseye, or flame" maple. These are just "defects" in the maple that are visually appealing. Neck - Tilt back headstock, maple with ebony fretboard. b) Bridge - fixed c) Pickups - I like Tom Anderson and Seymour Duncan. I hated EMG's, but I know others who love them. I don't have much experience with DiMarzios. Oh yeah, I had an old Bill Lawrence pickup that just kicked ass. d) Set up - although thick strings, high action, and a thick neck might yield great tone, it does nothing for my performance. If I can't play fluidly, then the tone is suffering. This is just my shortcoming, I like .009's, ultra low action, and Ibanez Wizard necks. These are not "tone" friendly, but I need these things to feel comfortable playing. 2) Amp - I feel a good amp is more important than a good guitar. I can sacrifice elements of the guitar (in favor of playability) and still get good tone with a good amp. Before you argue, let me state an observation. I can play an Ibanez RG-570 (not a "tone" guitar) and my custom ESP (a very good "tone" guitar) through my Mesa Dual Rectifier and they will both sound great. However, if I play through a crappy practice amp, they both sound pretty awful. Point - A good amp can help "fix" a bad guitar, but a good guitar can't fix a bad amp. So I would say look to your amp for tone "correction" before you look to your guitar. 3) The Player - just thought I would bring this one up for the hell of it. Yes - if your technique sucks, your tone will probably suffer. If your technique is flawless, your tone will definitely benefit. However, the reference to "its all in the hands" is pure shit. If it were ALL in the hands, everyone would save money and buy a Fender Squire guitar and a Crate amp. So the player shouldn't really be an opinion focal point. The player is very important to tone, but a million "it is all in your hands" doesn't really help anyone.
Personally, I love to discuss equipment and technique. When I brought up "economy picking" a month or so ago, I loved the responses. Anything that gets people thinking about their instrument is a good thing.

(THEY come to Puerto Rico :) If you like much afraid, i definitely reccommend checking out their first, self-titled CD. It rocks even more, imo. And stuff. I have to agree with Dave Campbell's opinion. I grew up in Rochester, NY and I can still remember this buzz about this awesome metal band recording an album at one of the local studios. At the time the only 'real' metal bands were bands like Venom and Motorhead. I was able to get a copy of their original demo tape (it was like a 50th generation copy) and it was one of the most amazing things I had heard at that time. Then about the same time Kill em All was release Slayer's Haunting the Chapel and the Queensryche demo found their way to the local underground record shop. Now Metallica is more or less redundant cheese (we've been refering to it as 'Alternica' or 'Metalicheese') Their last 'decent' albump was the black album and it paled in comparison to their earlier releases of Kill, Ride and Master. I would like to think that it's more or less the producer but he's only 1 of 5 people making the album.

Actually I'm thinking about starting a petition for a petition-free ytsejam.

Dream Theater have always been good to us. We *will* continue to get cool albums, etc. from them. Let's just leave their musical/creative projects up to them. I'm sure they will not disappoint us.
