    Are there any plans for some concerts in MExico?
    Steve Vai already came and did 2.
    I think it went pretty well, the first show was sold out and the second
    one was almost...the bad thing is that he only went to Mexico city, which
    is 10 hours away from here, DT should come to Monterrey (north of mexico,
    4 hours away from texas)

    This makes a big difference on the tonal characteristics of the guitar. A basswood body with a maple neck sounds completely different than a mahogany body and a rosewood fingerboard... the thing is, neither one sounds better... it depends on who is playing it, and through what. I'm just adding to what you said, with regards to this, since I know you probably agree.

    I find that the wood means more to tone than the paint job or lack thereof. My favorite guitar sounds have always come from guitars that have been painted, though, so I'm inclined to stick with painted guitars. I still want that Becker guitar with no paint, and the big colored numbers on the frets... :) As far as body shape, I find that the basic strat style seems to work best with what I do... by strat, I mean double cutaway, and no archtop.

    I like Maple fretboards just as much as ebony... each has its own tonal characteristic that can't really be duplicated on the other. This is one of those few reasons I think it's useful to have a couple guitars... I hate people who buy great guitars just to let them collect dust... it's a shame. I know a dude with a BEAUTIFUL swirl Universe (and as you know, some of them come out beautifully, and some look like a horse's ass) that he keeps in a locked case, and NEVER touches, and I know a dude with over 20 different 7 strings. It's obvious that there are people who would give anything to own one of these guitars, and yet, the instruments sit in basements, and collect dust.

    Bah! :) I have my trem blocked off on the 7 string, but I think I prefer to have the trem active. As long as you don't rely on it for all your licks, I think it can be really tasteful.

    What happened with the Lawrence? I'm a serious Duncan fanatic, but I'm going to go with EMGs on my 7 string, because they have specific tone issues that are best dealt with through active circuitry, IMO.

    I like to alternate my setup... I don't like to get too comfortable with any set up... that way I can usually play just about as well on any decently maintained guitar. I use .010's on the 7 string, and .009's on the 6 string... medium action. There's no reason to have really high action, unless you're trying to give yourself a workout. Low action makes my vibrato and bending weaker... I like to get under the strings a bit when I do a huge bend or a really wide vibrato (think Zakk Wylde). Whenever I have really low action, I end up falling back to legato too much, and that gets too easy. Also, since both of my electrics are Ibanez, low action means high fret-buzz when the weather changes as dramatically as it does in Chicago. I find that once you build a bit of finger strength, you can play as well on most string gauges. I can do my goofy tapping or legato on .010's as well as on .008's, now. It helps to practice your shred techniques on a heavy gauge(d) acoustic... makes it harder to cheat.

    I am inclined to disagree. At work I have to play on store guitars and store amps, because they figure that if the teacher impresses the student, the student will want a guitar like the one the teacher has... and connect the dots. So I'm teaching guitar on an Alvarez strat copy with a humbucker in the bridge and a maple neck, through a Crate GX20 and sounding like myself. When I go home and play through my RG550 into my TriAxis, I sound very similar.

    Then why don't people compliment Chris Impelliteri's tone, or George Bellas' tone? These guys are technical MONSTERS playing through great rigs... and they're missing something. Attention to detail... making a note sing like a voice, instead of like a piece of wire... there's more to it than I think you're acknowledging.

    I can't disagree with this any more than I do. Why is it that when I play through a replica of Petrucci's set up, my tone is nothing like his? Why is it that Steve Lukather couldn't sound like Eddie Van Halen when he played through Van Halen's rig? Why couldn't George Lynch get Warren DiMartini's tone when he stole DiMartini's amp out of his house? Why can't ANYONE sound just like Vai or Satch, or Eric Johnson? People don't play through Squire strats because they don't stay in tune, and don't add anything to your sound. They don't use Crate's low end solid state stuff, because they aren't loud enough, and don't add any thing to the tone. I assure you, though, that Steve Vai could make a Squire strat sound good through a Crate. I assure you that I can make a crappy Alvarez strat clone sound decent through a Crate amp. Bafu plays through a Crate amp and HE sounds great! I absolutely believe that the right touch on the strings, and the right finesse mean more than the guitar or the amp, or the venue, or the haircut, or the pick, or anything. A good guitar and a good amp compliment a musician, but the music comes from the musician, and if you can't make it sing, then no amount of cash is going to fix that. Becker and Friedman recorded some awesome stuff on Hurricane guitars, and the guitars they used, seem to me to be complete crap! Think about it.

    I have to agree with this. I'd personally rather listen to IF than the Erotomania/Voices/Silent Man Suite. (Even though Silent Man is probably my favorite song on Awake).

    Hello Jammers!!

    I went to DT show in Pordenone/Italy last night and thought I should share a couple things. The first thing that I find extremely cool is that the opening band was Rudess & Morgenstein! I liked Vanden Plas on previous shows alot, but R&M just kick ass!! I couldn`t belive the huge sound from only drums and keyboards, they sounded very much like a classic 4 piece instrumental band! I even got to buy their CD there and I REALLY recommend it!! My favorite track is definately "Crossing Over", but it will take alot of listening to fully comprehend this trully amazing CD. DT were amazing just like on every show I saw so far, I don`t have words to describe them(amazing is an understatement:) The setlist positively surprised me a bit. The full versions of TTT, TOT, LTL and a some parts of Change Of Seasons blew me away!! They opened with the Crimson Sunrise which was really refreshing. I also fullfiled my mision and made the banner for Mr.Portnoy. Mike if you`r reading this, I`m very sorry for hitting you in the face with it, but the crowd was crazy and I have two left hands anyway :) (hope you like the banner though).

    well I've never marveled at it, thats just how it was done :) I played bars and parties for years back in the late 80's and the customary payment for the band was free food and beer....needless to say we played a lot of parties under the influence, and there's nothing like playing 3 chord songs like 'born to be wild' with 3 times the distortion, extended solos, and twice the tempo that its supposed to be, toasted with a bunch of buronouts and bikers at a summer night bonfire party! ROFLMAO!!! those were the days....<sigh>

    It's that gawdawful chorus. PUKE... However, the ending instrumental section/guitar solo is freakin' great.

    I agree that the instrumental part of the song kicks major booty, but I can see why people have an overall objection to the song: James' vocals are a bit on the cheesy side. I wouldn't place the blame directly on him; the way the vocals were written has a lot to do with it. It's just that it has a fair amount of 80's cheese injected into it, that's all. In my opinion, it's not enough to kill the song, but those not used to James' style (or DT's in general) would balk.

    Im not saying its off topic, Im saying I am tired of reading "Metallica should go back to MoP and AJFA...They are a bunch of posers now." "No they arent, I like them." We have been reading the same shit ever since Load came out, and everyone who hasnt commented on it seems to think that their view will be somehow different than anyone else's. Same post, different name. Either you like them now, you dont, or you dont care. Im just getting tired of reading about it.

    But I am only one person, so go ahead and post how much Lars sucks, or how much you love Hammet's consistency in his solos over at least a 10 year time span. I challange you to add something new into the Metallica vs. Alternica debate, and welcome it, but for the love of god do not say something that has been said 400 times before..
