Damn I should have combined this one with my last post. Oh well other
people post a hell of a lot more than I do so I guess it doesn't
    matter. ;)

Alex> I was more than happy to see the name of this band mentioned
Alex> on the list again. I happened to go to the page that
Alex> what's-his-face, that German dude, posted (btw, WHAT IS THAT
Alex> URL??? I tried to get back there again, and couldn't find
Alex> it, and it was a kick-ass page, in any case), and downloaded
Alex> a couple mp3s of their newest CD that were there. I am now
Alex> sufficiently in love with this music to be lusting after CDs
Alex> of theirs, particularly this last one, Twilight on Middle
Alex> Earth.... I think. Somebody else had problems with the
Alex> title. :) In any case, just had to blather onward some more
Alex> about them, and if anyone has any info about the new CD, or
Alex> if any European jammers could get it for me or something,
Alex> that would rock my world. Email me if this is the case.
        Alex> Laters!

Well I can see that my name isn't making much of an impression
*grin*. First of all I am not German. Ok I have a German e-mail
address and I happen to live in Hamburg and my last name in German but
I am in reality a spy....ooops...I mean a physics graduate student
that is doing his research in a lab over here (I am originally from
    Maine in the USA).

And not be be slamming on Alex but dude you don't have a way with
names do you *grin*? The BG CD titles go like this:

      Battalions of Fear
      Follow the Blind
      Tales from the Twilight World
      Somewhere Far Beyond
      Tokyo Tales
      Imaginations from the Other Side
      The Forgotten Tales
      Nightfall in Middle Earth

If you are a big fan of Tolkien I would suggest that you pick up the
newest CD (which some out of April 26th) _Nightfall in Middle Earth_.
It is a concept story based on the _Silmarillion_. It takes a mighty
band to base a CD on such a book, and by God the whole thing works
    too!

And for you people in the US I will just say that a deal is in the
works for the BG stuff to be release in America through Century
Media. So it should be much quicker and cheaper to get it in the US
soon. Lets keep our fingers crossed.

Ok enough of the BG plus, check out the page at:

    Thanks,

    Hi all,

I thought maybe someone here would have an answer to my thought. Is there a program out there (Win95 or Linux) that I can take an existing mp3 file and edit it? You know, make it it shorter etc... If so could someone tell me where I can locate it? Thanks.

I know this is a DT mailing list and not a Primus so anyways, Pork Soda is hard to get into but i think its a good album, not as good as sailing the seas of cheese. Liquid Tension Experiment: I donīt think that thereīs anything about the greatness of this album that I can say that hasnīt been said already.Simply, it kicks ass! The mix is done pretty good.Drums sound great. You can hear every ghost note and cymbal hit clearly.Bass is also very prominent in the mix as is the guitar. Most of the time you can hear the keyboards pretty good but on songs like Universal Mind they tend to get buried in the mix, which I donīt like. But that doesnīt happen very often(Well, I had to find SOME bad sides about this cd :-).I really canīt name any favorite tracks on this cd since they all rule(including three minute warning).

    rating:A must have!

    Spockīs Beard:The Light

Before I bought this cd I had some preconceptions about this cd.I thought they were another Rush-clone or something like that. How wrong I was!I canīt really describe their style because itīs so diverse. If they resemble any band itīs Mystic Fishook(not much, though). The singer has a great voice which really fits into the music.Drummer has great feel and taste of what to play and where to play it.Bass, guitar and keyboard player are all top of the range players, too. The mix is good. You can hear every instrument cleanly.Well, the snare drum is tuned a bit too low for my tastes but it fits into the music, so Iīm not complaining.

    Rating:Excellent!

    Symphony X:Twilight in Olympus

If you liked their previous albums youīll love this one. This is probably their best album(IMO,<---see!).To those of you who arenīt familiar with their music, they are progmetal with baroque music influences.Singerīs voice really shines on this album.Heīs voice is so powerful itīll knock your head off!The new drummer is atleast as good as the previous one.Excellent guitar work by Mr.Romeo.Rest of the playerīs handle their job great, too.The mix is done as good as in DWoT, great. There are some reservations about this band I feel I should mention. Some of my friends describe them as 80īs "pussy" metal or something like that.I canīt imagine why, I donīt hear it AT ALL in this music.

Rating:Great stuff, but not for everyone.

This album kicks so much, the disc is more of the same from SX. Apparently the album was 'rushed' and for me it shows. The production seems not as good as 'tDWoT', but this is mere nit-picking from me. Along with LTE this is my fave release of the year so far.

The tilte is NOT "Twilight On Middle Earth" !!! The album will be named : "Nightfall On Middle Earth" and will be released by the end of April in Europe by Virgin Records.

Btw, Blind Guardian (they are from Krefeld, the city where I live in) are not a Progressive band. They are a power-speed metal band with symphonic elements.

Last week I received an email from a new Italian prog magazine called ['mju:zik], asking if I could tell the Dream Theater fans about their second issue. It'll have a 16 page supplement about Dream Theater (see below), including an interview they did with them last Thursday. In addition to the Italian version, there's also a fully translated English version available. For those who subscribe for a year, there's a cool DT contest too... If you're interested, check out their site at http://www.mjuzik.it/ or email Andrea at <soncini.a@mail.aitec.it> for more information. If you need information on how to subscribe or order one issue, check out http://www.mjuzik.it/mjufr.htm

Hey all, I'm in a band here in Dallas. I get to see a lot of local headliners that would probably be a lot better if half or the whole band weren't playing under the influence. The last time we played out we opened for Dr.Wood. Those guys were drinking and they didn't play really well. But anyway,I choose not to drink until after the gig is over. I personally feel that alcohol would inhibit my ability to play in control. So I'll down a pitcher of water during the gig and then have a couple of beers afterwards. That's just my opinion. Anybody ever see Skid Row in the late '80s. Sebastian Bach couldn't carry a tune in a bucket if he was drunk....totally sucked!! When he was sober he was dead on. That's just an example.

P.S. Any Dallas/Ft. Worth drummers plan on going to see the one and only TERRY BOZZIO next month at the Guitar Center in Dallas??? I'm DEFINITELY there!!!!

What? No Savatage? They're like the epitome of keyboard blended rock. Methinks Edge of Thorns and Jesus Saves would be good examples of such. So would most of the Dead Winter Dead album. >> I would have to agree with this. Savatage is most prominently missing from this list. How about Chance? Can't get much better than that, outside of DWD.

    >>I've only two of 'tage's discs at present, DWD and Streets. I would probably stay away from the songs on those because the growly vocals would probably turn her off some. I'll have to rethink it though, most of DWD is very orchestral and I hadn't remembered it for some reason. Not "Christmas Eve/Sarajevo 12/24", though; that's just not fitting except 'round Christmastime. :) >>

If she doesn't like much growly stuff than she may not appreciate Streets, true, but DWD is a can't-miss. There are so many songs to choose from on that CD that just blow you away. I WANT THE WAKE OF MAGELLAN. There, that being said....

I have this cd, purchased after talking with two of the members of the band at Powermad 97. It's really not too bad, if you don't mind metallic, mechanical-sounding production values. Think "Rage for Order" style effects. The whole cd is a concept, and there are several spoken-word type intervals going on throughout. The singer, to me, sounds nothing like Ray Alder. He has been compared to JLB on several occasions, and I guess I can see it, but I think he is not as annoying as JLB. The music is interesting, and if you are a fan of the prog metal scene (duh), it wouldn't be a waste of your cash to buy the cd. It should only be about 12 dollars. I am looking forward to seeing them live this year at Powermad 98.

Well, I certainly recommend Digital Ruin. They're a new band, and are kind of young sounding, but they show tons of promise. They sound like a Mindcrime era QR mixed with Fates Warning. It's a little choppy, and a few things they could correct here and there, but if these guys stick together, they're gonna do really well. It's one of those situations where you have a chance to own the first cd by a band that may just kick a lot of ass in the months/years to come.

    Definitely worth checking out!
