    Hey, gang.

I'm (once again) going to do a weird thing. For those of you who
are travelling from out of town to come to the philly show, lemme know. i
might be able to have accomodations (ok, a floor) to sleep on at my
place. you'd have to bring the sleepstuff, but you wouldn't have to pay
for the room. If you're interested, and depending on how many people ask,
leme know - and arrangements can be made.

     - mike.

Sorry about that last post!! It got cut off and it was sent before it was
completed!! Anyway, I was just wondering if any jammers from the NEGLECTED
southeast (what's the deal, Mike?? :) are planning on road-trippin' it to the
show in Philly this May at the Electric Factory. Email me privately if this
    is you.

Also, did anyone check out the column on page 29 of the May issue of Guitar
World about LTE? It's got some quotes from JP! Pretty cool,
huh?....considering this is the same magazine that places Kirk Hammet as the
    best metal guitarist! :)

Alright, I know I've set myself up for it, but here goes a whole bunch of
Blind Guardian post responses. For those of you not interested, you are
    herewith warned.

Yeah, Jason, I'd say you've made another convert. *grin back*. However, I
just got this really cool memory gain recently (this type of thing happens
when your short term memory is on the fritz most of the time, like mine,
and then will occassionally come back to haunt you - maybe that explains my
problem with the names of the songs :), and it all started with the name
"Bright Eyes." See, it turns out my dandy cousin in Germany, who tuned me
into prog, had shown me a video of this song that was actually aired on
music television over there in Europe. So, the mp3 clips I heard on the
site were not the first. I clean forgot about that (no cracks about how
memorable it was). But they definitely blew me out of the water.

    >Well I can see that my name isn't making much of an impression *grin*.
Once again, I plead short term memory lapse...actually, I have no idea
what made me forget. None. Since I was so impressed with all that stuff,
it's not logical. I never claimed to be, however, so I guess that leaves
me in the clear. Lemme know if you spy out anything interesting... and I
do apologize for not remembering. Forgive me if possible.

Hey, what's up with this tape mix business? Being particular about who can
play tapes to death? JK, giving you a hard time, but still.

    And Mike added:
    >I was already a huge BG fan, but "Mirror..." is tremendous. BUY THE
    >ALBUM when it comes out at the end of the month...

OK, SINCE YOU ARE FORCING ME, I MEAN TWISTING MY ARM BEHIND MY BACK AND
HAVING ME IN A HEADLOCK, I MAY JUST BE FORCED TO DO THAT!

    Sheesh. Nothing like peer pressure.

And just for the record Jason, I ain't a dude, but I can see where my email
addy would be to blame. Take care all,

    Alex(andra)

Some people call it cheesy, but I REALLY dig my BC Rich Warlock. It's got
a Mahogany body and a 22-fret rosewood fretboard, the body is jet black,
DiMarzio Air Norton (neck) and Seymour Duncan Trembucker (bridge) pickups,
and a stationary bridge. The sound out of this guitar is just KILLER,
mainly due to the massive body. If you're into really heavy sounds, or
really clear, warm, clean sounds, definitely give BC Rich a try. The
Mockingbird BC Rich guitars aren't half bad either.

Peace and love, and good happiness stuff, ~Vince

I agree, for the most part. One thing I noticed tho, is in TMW - Mike and
John seem to have this link from playing together so much (i know the
feeling, i have the same sort of thing with my fellow band members, only it
doens't work as well all the time :), so lots of times during the jam you
hear john and mike kind of dominate the music and levin and rudess kinda
just follow along. At least, that's what it seemed like to me. i noticed
several times that like levin would try and start a riff or whatever around
the same time that john did, and mike would go with john's. Not like it was
always mike and john, and levin and rudess just as backup or anything, it
was a 4-person jam, i just noticed the relationship several times. I can
ideantify with that - i often find myself doing it but more often and less
considerately than LTE. When i'm jamming with my band and someone i aint
played with before we tend to not really include the new guy and he ends up
just kinda playing along. YKWIM? Yeah, well, moo.

On another note, i just installed MS Outlook98 and it imported all these
really old messages i didn't know were still on my HD, so today i had the
pleasure of going over all the old jams from when we were back on arastar
(back when i still saved every one i got :). Number 1257, the last one
before the jam moved to ax.com, with bafu's "Everything I Need To Know
About Life I Learned From The Ytsejam". That post is actually really good.
There's 2 things he says there that i might quote some time in my sig.
Hehe. Well, enough of the memory lane crap. Moo again.

    And moo one more time.

    Lata moo.

Well, it sounds a LOT like other DT albums to me. It seems that Mr.
Shirley mixed John Petrucci so high that it's very dififcult to hear the
other musicians. (Well, except Mike.) I'm not sure whether it's my stereo
or the CD's mix levels, but it's almost impossible for me to hear Tony
behind the rest of the band. It's also not easy to hear Jordan, except
    when he's soloing.

Or, it may just be perception. Both John and Mike have a very unique
sound, and when listening to the CD, I immediately recognize their sounds
and think, "Oh, that's John [or Mike]." I'd probably do the same if I had
heard anything with Jordan or Tony on it. So it may just be me <g>.

Also, I generally skip "Three-Minute Warning." Yes, it's very cool, and
amazing considering it's the first take. But I like the rest of the album
better, because they have far better melodies, "orchestrations," etc.

    My 0.02 cents,

    Ryan

I'm wholeheartedly seconding (or thirding or fourthing?) this. I saw a
spoken word performance in September 1996 in Norfolk, VA, and it was just
absolutely great. While I have a couple of his spoken word CDs and books,
which are great in their own right, it's just all the better when you're
there to actually see his facial expressions and gestures. You WILL be on
the floor laughing yourself silly. This I guarantee. He's the rare kind
of individual that can convey the emotion of whatever he's talking about
very well; he's very descriptive, colorful, and BLUNT. His shows are not
for the weak of heart or mind. ;)

I met him after the aforementioned performance, and he's a very nice guy.
He has a very commanding presence, but very cool -- he's just as witty and
spontaneous up close as he is on stage. I still have vivid memories of
standing in front of him when all of a sudden, his hand snapped out and
snatched me by the jaw while describing a scene he had done in a movie with
Dolph Lundgren. That startled the hell out of me, for sure. <G>

*sniff* damn I love this mailing list. =P

I've been loosely following the discussion between the guitarists about
tone for the hell of it. I have absolutely no idea what any of it means,
but I've always been fascinated by stuff I don't understand (sorta like
the freakout borrowed subdivisions in Light Fuse...). Then along comes
Bafu and...I laughed. Hard. I'm sure that was even funnier for Ptacek
and Co. ("I am the law!" heh heh)

One time while I was drunk, I tried to sing Under A Glass Moon. I'm a
drummer. I have a stereotypical drummer's voice. I had objects thrown at
me when I tried to do the falsetto in the chorus. Big, heavy objects. (I
can hardly get above middle C, let alone thirteen octaves above it the
    way LaBrie does.)

    >Hey drummers, what do you think about this whole "playing drunk
    >thing?"

Never tried. I think I could do pretty well with comparatively simple,
improv-based stuff, especially if it was something like head-solo-head
jazz or blues or straightforward metal, etc., etc. Anything beyond an
intermediate level would probably be too much for me--I'm talking like
psycho stuff like DT, or just weird time sigs in general, or anything
with a lot of stops and starts and syncopation like some of DMB's
trickier stuff (Drive In Drive Out comes to mind--think you could do
that end section while a bit sloshy?), etc. I refuse to be drunk for a n
important gig though--I mean, if we're just fuckin around at somebody's
birthday party or something, that would be one thing. But a real gig? No
    way.

    >Wed. May 13 - House of Blues - Chicago, IL.

Chicago's a long way to go, especially if I'm going to be workin that
    week...but downtown ain't. Yay.
St. Louis Jammers....can we organize a thingie of some sort before the
St. L show? Perhaps stop in at Blueberry Hill or Fitz's prior...heh heh.

    >Anacrusis Sound The Alarm Screams And Whispers
Merlo, you rock...Division is their best cut though, IMHO....now THAT
would be a helluva song to cover...whatever happened to them anyway?

    >I've heard quite a few people say that a good solid drummer is hard >to
    find.

I've heard people say that too..."man, we can never find any decent
drummers to play with"...I think it's partly because a lot of musicians
have this attitude that the drummer is just there to go wham-wham-wham
on 1-2-3-4 and keep the time, and so a lot of drummers never develop
beyond that ability. And so they don't have any technical ability at
all. Drummers aren't encouraged to develop their own sense of identity,
the way guitarists are. I mean, have you heard any albums consisting
solely of drumset? Plenty of em out there with just guitar....I realize
that many drummers probably couldn't even take an hour of just
percussion, but you get my point. I try to play everyday, just doing at
least 30 minues of sheer improv by myself and then some exercises for
another 15-30 minutes. If you can't work yourself into a groove in five
minutes of freedom, you'd better go back to the woodshed.

    </self-pity>

I realize this is an incredibly long post as it is, but lemme recommend
Bruford Levin Upper Extremities to all of you. Very, very good stuff.
Not as "groovy" as BLS...less melodic, more experimental. Weirder
instruments. Weirder polyrhythms from King 5-over-7 himself, Bruford.
(Drummers, get this, and listen to the first track. It's in 4, but
Bruford doesn't care. Absolutely psycho polyrhythms.)

Enough. This is too damn long.
    Metallica's gay.

You know, as far as this thing about metallica goes, go ahead and blast
them for saying the same old rehashed stuff, but that happens in mailing
lists often. I'm on a football mailing list that always turns back into
how bad my team drafted last year, same shit, different day, but often,
different people. Not everyone has been on this list since it began,
and see a topic, and just want to voice their opinion, whether it's
fresh or rehashed. How many other topics on this group have been told
over and over again??? It's attitudes like yours that make me
uncomfortable about asking questions about DT, for fear that someone
like you may fuss about it being old stuff that people are tired
of...just let people talk man...we're all jammers and we have stuff to
    say...good or stupid...:)

UK radio this morning (tuesday) is reporting that Cozy Powell (50) died in a car accident on Sunday night.

Besides Emerson, Lake and Powell, he's remembered (by some of us) for also playing with Rainbow, Whitesnake, Black Sabbath and also for his big UK hit single 'Dance with the Devil' - now that could only have happened in the 70's!!!
