Got LTE today and love it of course. One thing that bothers me is Mike's
snare sound. I hate the hollow, ringing snare sound on LTE and for that
matter on many of the tracks on FII. My question, is that Mike's sound or
Shirley's? I wish Portnoy would go back to the Awake sound or at least
stick with the sound he got on Lines in the Sand which is the best
sounding track on FII. Just some thoughts, take the time.

Well, I'm near Cedar Rapids, IA-sort of on your way if driving.
Last I checked they're not up for grabs yet, just go to your nearest box
office and ask or check the tixmaster site.

A week or so ago I bought a used copy of Threshold's "Psychedelicatessen"
through the Internet. It arrived, to my dismay, without any liner notes
whatsoever. So I'm asking for a favor. Would someone with the above album
please either scan the liner notes and send 'em to me electronically or
make color photocopies and snail-mail them? I'll cover the costs of
postage/copying/time spent/whathaveyou -- you can even have a CD or two
from the below list. Please drop me a mail (hender@wam.umd.edu) if you're
able to help me out. Thanks in advance.
I've still got the following (non-remastered) Rush albums available for $5
each or $13 for all 3:
A Farewell To Kings
Hemispheres
Hold Your Fire
To anyone that wants them, respond quickly. They hit the used CD store in
a day or two.
I saw an amusing documentary yesterday in my token bullshit class,
Ethnomusicology. It was called something like "The Metal Age" and
featured, among other things, an interview with Paul Stanley lying in bed
with about four scantily clad women, members of Poison and a few other
bands talking about the size of their genitals followed by a message from
quotemaster Dave Mustaine ("It's not the size of your pencil that matters;
it's how well you write with it."), Lemmy Kilmister humbly taking credit
for the term 'headbanger', Lizzy Borden covering Steppenwolf's "Born To Be
Wild", Alice Cooper doing an interview without blinking, and
gigantic-haired fans explaining what it meant to be a metalhead.
Waiting for the domestic release of Savatage's "The Wake of Magellan" paid
off, I guess. There's 3 'acoustic bonus tracks', two of the infamous
voice-switchings (Jon does Zak, Zak does Jon...people, people!!) and
another track left off of "Streets". Great album too. Maybe their best of
the Zak years?

Hiya,
Here's a list of all the people that I know of who are going to the DT show
in St. Louis on May 15th:
St Louis DT Jammers:
Seth Hatlelid (and girlfriend) <srhatlel@artsci.wustl.edu>
Dale R. Newberry <drnewb@spiff.net>
Tom Cox (and girlfriend) <lexine@rollanet.org>
There are some non-jammer friends of mine from college who are going to go
up with me. I agree with Dale that we should get together someplace before
the showm but I'm goin got have to vote down Blueberry Hill because it's
21+ and many of the people who are hoing with me are college aged (18-21).
If you want to be added to the list, email me and I'll send out updates
about the whole thing. Also, let's get some ideas about 21 and under plaves
to meet.
If any jammer needs a place to crash or needs someone to pick up some
tickets via Metrotix let me know and we'll talk.
We could get together a litle early that day and make a St. Louis banner
for Mike's practice room! (meet the guys maybe ;-).
Let me know,
Seth

Well, they seem to go in threes. They didn't play (or pretend to play) the
same type
of music. But it's three music artists.
Tammy Wynette for you youngings was a huge Country singer in the 60's.
Famous for
her duets with George "no show" Jones.
Rob Pilitas: Just couldn't get off drugs.
Now Cozy in an accident. He was the original drummer in Rainbow and well as in
ELP, Brian May Band, MSG, and Black Sabbath, and numerous guest spots on others'
cds and tribute a;bums.
What a sad way to start a week.

To whomever asked this:
The main difference between Mesa and Marshall that I have heard from comparing
them is that Marshall tends to have more of a brittle tone. I don't like
brittle tone (personal preference) and also Marshalls seem to have a fuzzy
lead tone, which I can't stand. (again, personal preference). Some Mesa combos
have fuzzy lead tone, but the Triaxis, V-twins, and certain other heads like
the Mark IV tend to be pretty smooth. I use a rack V-twin, and my housemate
(and former bandmate) just bought a used Tri-axis. We both compared Mesa to
a bunch of other amp manufacturers, and we concluded that Mesa stomps them all.
(our preference for tone is toward Petrucci's, so don't think that this is
the way it is for everyone.)
Hope that helps...

I've seen them at both places more than once... while the House of Blues
is a very nice establishment, the soundstage of the Galaxy cannot be beat,
it was designed as a true soundstage, and the place is pretty large for a
club-sized venue, it can hold about 1000, has a balcony level, and a nice
lounge area... they also run an automated sound system with QSC power
amps, pretty good stuff for a club.
The House of Blues, holds about 500-700, maybe a 1000 if it's REALLY
packed in... the ceiling is high, the second level bar/balcony area is
large, but the place is not as deep as the Galaxy, so therefore the sound
doesn't develop as much, but the interior decor is classic House of Blues,
very classy and nice.
I've also seen DT at the Celebrity Theater in Anaheim during I&W, that
place is quite large, but it's a circular sort of configuration, so they
had to cut half of it off during the DT show... it's an ok place to see a
show, the seating is kinda weird. Place holds about 2000 or more if
completely seated without cutting off half of it.
The Palace in Hollywood, this place is smaller than all the rest, but has
that true rock club kinda feel like the Limelight in NY... high ceiling,
dark, and blaring sound system, cool decor... holds about 400 maybe.

In a message dated 98-04-07 14:58:02 EDT, you write:
<< Comparisons cannot be made IMHO between these two amps. Some people like the Marshall sound better than the Mesa/Boogie sound. I actually went head shopping today. I didn't like the Dual Rectifier. I much preferred the Slash sig. model Marshall. It's a matter of taste. Not which is better. Harro. >>
I agree that one isn't superior than the other, but how thorough were you with the Mesa Dual Rectifier? The first time I tried it out, the store dude helping me wasn't much help - so I didn't explore ALL of it's possibilites and wasn't impressed. The second time I checked it out - I was blown away. I have the Rectifier and have loved it for a very long time. Also, don't just check out Marshall and Mesa - what about Rivera? Rivera can make some really good amps. Any real lover of tone would never limit himself to one type of amp.
And I didn't go Mesa because of John Petrucci (or Ibanez). I've been playing guitar longer than I have known about Dream Theater. If I was really a JP follower - I'd have a Mark II+C. JP always raves about this amp. I'll check it out not because I am a JP follower, but because I am a JP admirer. The difference - I can figure that because I like his tone that his opinions on it make it worth checking out. However, I am also able to walk away if I don't agree with JP's choices.
Which circles back to the "who cares what your heroes listen to"? I care. Just like I care what people on the Jam say to check out. It doesn't mean I am a "follower". It just means that I have chosen to use people with similar likes in music as a reference point and guideline to discovering new music, equipment, playing techniques, etc. A follower is someone who limits his choices to fit in with a particular crowd. I use the information to expand, not limit my choices.

The following are the 7 string companies I'm able to find so far... I'd like to keep track of any and all entries into this market, for when I decide it's time to drop my Ibanez gear. Does anyone know of any other companies, preferably with literature or web presence?
Current: Ibanez ( http://www.ibanez.com ) B.C. Rich (No web presence yet) Schecter ( http://www.schecterguitars.com/ ) Abyss Guitars -may be my next guitar company ( http://kalnet1.kalnet.com/~astokka/ ) Conklin ( http://www.conklinguitars.com )
Does anyone know if Performance guitars builds 7 strings? ESP? What about Washburn? Didn't they have some extreme guitars in the late 80's / early 90's?
Past 7 string makers: Fender Gibson Hamer Charvel (the MichaelAngelo guitar was a 7 string)

Well,
Unfortunately I get jiped out of a DT concert again. Just because LA has lots of people doesn't mean that the San Francisco Bay Area shouldn't get anything. Yeah I know they came to Palo Alto last time, but its really agrivating when they come to CA but no where close for me to go! Well hopefully when DT comes back late in the summer they'll play here (Mike, do another Warfield concert!! Hint hint :)
Comment on a previous thread:
While I do like 2 hour DT sets in small clubs (cause there is so much awsome music and your so close to the band), but performing with DP and others will allow them to get bigger venues (WHERE THERE IS NO AGE LIMIT!!!) I really hate that! Thank God the last Palo Alto show was all ages!
