Today was a bad day.The phone call came in around 10am that Cozy powell
had died in a car accident. Cozy had been a great friend since 1983 when
I met him through David Coverdale at a Whitesnake concert. We both hit
it off real well and became real friendly over the years. Cozy wanted to
be my drummer for a long time and came up to me during the Vigil tour
having a real tongue in cheek go at me for not asking him .I played with
him in the SAS band in the early formations and I saw him regularly
throughout the years, our last serious night out after a Peter Green gig
in Edinburgh.
My most memorable night with him was during a 1984 Whitesnake after show
party in Kensington when he asked me to go to North London with him to
pick up some "consumables". I got into the car well aware of his
reputation as a professional certificated driver and expected the works.
I got it and more, 115 mile an hour at some stages on the North Circular
as he drove brilliantly in sparse (thankfully) late night traffic
northward. When we arrived I told him he was the best driver I'd ever
had the pleasure to be with and he cursed. He said he'd been trying to
give me a "whitey" and added that I'd been the coolest passenger he'd
ever had in his car. I'd been shitting bricks!
Cozy was a great friend and one of the old school of British rock
musicians, professional to the core, a severe party animal when the
chains slipped, a caring and honest all round good-guy and someone I'm
going to miss a hell of a lot. The dangerous twisted smile before a
major wind up, the dirty Sid James laugh and the explosive drumming that
always warranted a solo. that was Cozy and he'll be long thought of with
fondness by everyone who worked with him and spent time in his company.
The next time you hear thunder in the heavens-it ain't meteorological!

Yep, DT indeed played a part of Freebird from Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Petrucci himself said so. After the show in Munster my brother, his wife and I had some questions concerning some parts of music we didn't recognize. We waited outside to meet the boys. After a while we decided to go inside and saw John Petrucci. We asked him what those parts were. One of those parts was Freebird. They also played a piece of an American TV-show called 'The Monsters'. Another thing he played was by an Italian guitarist, whose name I forgot.

Oh?Well, I think that the snare sound(and the rest of the drums)in LTE
is the best sound Mike has ever gotten from his snare.It even beat my
past favorite, the snare sound in ACOS.I really donīt care for the snare
sound in Awake and I&W.On I&W itīs the horrible 80īs snare sound(but it
wasnīt up to the band to decide).On Awake thereīs too much of the snare
strainer in the sound, and it overwhelms the other instruments because
itīs so prominent in the mix.On LTE and ACOS Mike has found the right
combination of the strainer and the real tone of the drum, while on
Awake the tone is a bit choked(you donīt want your toms to sound choked,
so why should the snare?).On FII thereīs too much tone in the sound and
not enough strainer.The snare is also tuned too low for my tastes.The
rest of the drums sound too muddy, too.
But thatīs just my opinion.

YES!! Buy this man a drink!!
It's always fun to see them up close and feel that personal connection.
Adobrable little clubs are fun for that, but it's time to start thinking
big! It's time for the guys to take it to the next level. One nice
aspect of seeing them in a larger space is that they'll have to use
larger speakers and more or them :)
When I saw ELP (you know, back when man first began to walk upright :),
they packed about 20,000 folks into the Providence Civic Center (heh,
the place holds somewhere around 18,000 I believe), ELP even had
speakers in the rear of the center.
Mike, if you're reading this, do whatever you can to book it there (or
the Fleet Center), man!! There are plenty of people in the area who will
be going just to see ELP and DP.
Personally, I think it's great that they're touring with ELP, as ELP
provides a lot of the progressive elements that DT does. Yeah, ok, so
Greg Lake ain't no John Pertrucci :) Keith Emerson is a monster! None of
these dinky little keyboards with 8GB of main memory. We're talking
exploding Hammond Organs, stacks of synths on elevator platforms! They
used to have something like 3 huge trucks just to support all the
equipment/staging that the show required. RRRRRRRRRRRRRRROAR! hehehehe
Bring back the large venues we grew up with! I can recall reading
reviews in the paper the next day about shows that occured at the large
halls. Reviews of the tiny gigs were few and far between and most often
were only if it was a monster act, like say a Miles Davis or some other
legendary musician playing in an intimate setting.
And he told two friends who told two friends who told two friends...
