    I have a thesis to work on and cannot have all these e-mails cluttering
    up my mailbox.

    Again with the contests :) Ok, here we go:

    I caught Bruford with the BBB back in the late 70's and he did kick my ass. That is, when I could take my eyes off Alan Holdsworth's or Jeff Berlin's playing, long enough to notice! I'd have to say, one of the best club gigs I've ever attended. And I've been to many hundreds (not bragging, just emphasizing how good the show was :)

    There's something about his staccato that just gets to me after a while. I can only take so much of it. Very tight drummer, don't get me wrong. Scary chops! I have and still do listen to him for hours on end. I have One of A Kind, Gradually Going Tornado, several UK albums, and most of the Yes collection, so I have in fact given it a thorough chance. But, Bill, dewd, buddy: open that high hat now and then, guy :) Guess it's just a personal preference thing for me, but I've always enjoyed Alan White's style more. I just happen to prefer the different styles he uses. I'd still pay to see either though :) Matter of fact, he's coming to House of Blues with Tony Levin, next week :):):):)

    As far as outplaying anyone, I ain't goin' there :) They all outplay my nadz, ok? :)

    Check out the drummer in Jon Finn's (http://www.tiac.net/users/jonfinn) band. Circles? He is known for being able to play geometric shaps that can't be visualised using modern equipment :) A fantastic sense of rhythm and his expression is so colorful!! This is not boring stuff, by any means. This guy just flat out beats the crap out of a tiny kit! And then he doesn't :) Amazing control...     James does have his problems, but he's _far_ more consistent on this tour than on past tours. The reason is he's singing more "intelligently." On the I&W and Awake tours he would try to hit insane notes even when everyone in the place knew he couldn't do it, and all too often he'd end up crashing and burning in flames. This tour, however, he's not trying to do more than he feels he can on any given night, and the result is much better consistency. He may not do the "Bear this honor in my NAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAME" or "Tell your stepfather I SAIIIIIIIIID SOOOOOOOOOOOOO," anymore, but he's also reduced his chances of looking foolish tenfold by taking it a bit easier on himself. There's also the fact that he's got much more backing vocal support now than in previous tours. I'm sure he felt pressure to be singing his ass off at all times during the previous tours, but, like Geoff Tate, having others singing with you can help alot. (Tho' Portnoy and Pettrucci are no DeGarmo and Wilton vocally.) :) Plus it sounds much better, much fuller. Especially on songs like Voices. They did the vocal harmonies on the "See my diary on the newsstand, seems we've lost the truth to quicksand" part during the first few shows of the (pre)Awake tour (the Rudess show comes to mind), but then didn't do it again until this tour. Just gives them a much more mature sound. Just my two cents... :)

    Maiden were dead set on getting a British singer. It never really bothered me that much until I heard that Michael Kiske had auditioned for the job. But of course he didn't get in because he is German. I would KILL to get a hold of his audition tape! Kiske is truly the man with a golden voice, who would have been able to handle anything Bruce had done. Blaze does have a bit of trouble with a lot of Bruce's stuff live, especially "The Evil That Men Do". That one was really bad on the choruses. Overall I still like Blaze a singer, but he just isn't meant for Maiden. (DTC here!) As for the KJLB comment, just be glad that Steve Stone didn't make it. No disrepect to him if he is on the list, but his tape was horrible. I wonder who DT would have gone with it KJLB didn't send in an audition tape? What do you think?

    What would She-Wolf sound like with John Arch? In other words, the song has a huge Night On Brocken/Spectre Within vibe, and Arch almost seems a natural in that song...

    Now, this is way off anything DT, but at the mention of our on-campus food provider, I just had to throw in my two cents. It's just plain NASTY. They overcharge b/c they know you have nowhere else to go (in most cases, anyway). It scares me that I can get used to it during the course of a semester. Of course, there was then this rumor that somebody else was buying up the bid to feed our college...hahaha, cruel joke. Marriott is still here, with their watery eggs and scary meatlike substances, served in a syrup of SOMETHING.

    Hmm, I've been to all three, if you mean the Rasputins and Streetlight along Bascom in SJ. They have a lot of prog (CD Warehouse being the best), but I didn't see any prog metal CDs at any of the stores when I was there. Are they hidden is some section? All these stores have an odd arrangement system. Rasputins has a metal section, but it looked like pretty much all death metal bands to me. Which reminded me of something: does every Death Metal band use the same artist for their CD covers? All the art looked like it was taken from the same comic book on almost every CD I picked up.

    To all, I do recommend a visit to the above mentioned stores if you're in the SF/SJ area. They all have a ton of used CDs, a prog section, and a bunch of other stuff (including used Laser Discs at Rasputins and Streetlight! We bought a bunch when we were there).

    Francis Dunnery, Let's go Do what happens: this one comes out in the states on april 28th....Dunnery is formerly of It Bites (eat me in St. Louis, among other albums) Not quite as cool as what I remember of that band's music, but the promo sticker isn't lying when it touts the album as "fun-filled".....one cool disc, to be sure.....

    Discipline Unfolded Like Staircase Strung Out Records

    Discipline’s latest album, Unfolded Like Staircase, runs for 65 minutes, but it contains only four songs. Do the math, and you can see that the Royal Oak-based band isn’t making music for the pop charts. What the band loses in radio-friendliness, however, is more than compensated by the thoughtfulness, and “completeness” of this album. The length of each song allows Discipline to take a musical and lyrical idea and develop it fully. Lyricist/vocalist Matthew Parmenter tackles his weighty topics, ranging from mental illness to the afterlife, with a storyteller’s touch. The music itself is progressive rock, influenced by early, Peter Gabriel-era Genesis. The band took its name from a King Crimson album, and that background is also evident throughout the album. Those bands do not, however, limit Discipline’s sound, as they have incorporated a wide range of influences into their music. If I had to pick a single adjective to describe the whole album, it would have to be somber, if only due to the lyrical subject matter. The music on Unfolded Like Staircase runs the gamut from eerie to ecstatic, from gloomy King Crimson to Dream Theater flash. The opening track, “Canto IV (Limbo)” begins stridently, by Paul Dzendzel’s crisp percussion and a saxophone, courtesy of Parmenter. The song settles into a somber groove, appropriate for its tale of a man trapped in the eternal nether world between heaven and hell known as Limbo. Parmenter’s lyrics use the concept of Limbo as presented in Dante’s Inferno, and lets you into the mind of the protagonist as he struggles to understand his hopeless plight, “And here I am in Limbo/Desiring without hope we live/..../how can there possibly be/no more room up there for me?” The best song on Unfolded Like Staircase is the 22 minute epic, “Into the Dream.” The first five minutes are highlighted by an eerie, stalking, inescapable bassline from Matthew Kennedy. The lyrics tell a frightening tale of Freudian repression giving way to evil dreams, an ever-blurring border between violent fantasy and murderous reality, “He lives in my dreams/Life denied as a child/He has grown sick and wild/and he wants me to kill/’kill them all in their sleep’.” The listener is sucked along for a wild ride by Jon Preston Bouda’s guitar work as the protagonist contemplates all kinds of mayhem, before finally escaping from the destructive suggestions. The disc’s final track, “Before the Storm” provides yet another testament to Discipline’s diversity. Parmenter picks up a violin in this song’s climax, offering a touch of the Dave Matthews Band to top off what is, simply put, one of the best CDs I have.
