Ok, let me break it down. Primal Fear's debut cd is self-titled. The cd features a solo here and there from Kai Hansen. The cd also features a cover of Deep Purple's "Speed King." As for the material itself, imagine Judas Priest from 1982-85 run through a blender and a bit more modern in its production. I am of the opinion that there are purposeful allusions to JP on this disc - otherwise there is some serious plagarism going on! Good stuff, but this is no "Sigh No More."

    WTF is going on?!

My Mom heard me listening to DT today (Surrounded) and said "Who's this?" After I told her, she said "hey, that's pretty good". She then heard HY, TAMP, WFS, and some of AD and liked all of it!?

Okay, okay...... those are their softie songs you say. Here's the kicker....

She listened to all of Metropolis Pt.1, and even said that it was good as well! Also she listened to JP's long solo (the kinda bluesy one) on the LiT video (after To Live Forever, I think), and liked that too!

Now she's gonna borrow my I&W and FII cd's (I sure as hell don't think she's ready for Awake yet, :-P ) Consider my mind totally blown...........

Will miracles never cease? - Joe DeAngelo

p.s. My Mom said she thinks James' voice sounds a bit like Freddy Mercury from Queen (not a ton, but a bit). Anyone agree with this?

Well, a friend of mine (who was into progressive rock and didn't even know -- she only had some CDs and thought they were good) told me the same thing.

BTW, my Mom says (whenever I start playing some DT) that "So, here come you again with those guys... Well, they have some nice hairs [Comment -- she watched to both the I&W video and the Japan Pay-Per-View show with me]... They must be a bunch of gays..."

She likes "Master of Puppets". :-) (She told that she thinks that the only male singer in heavy metal that has voice of a real man is James Hetfield -- the others scream way too much and often seem like a girl or like those cookie monsters :-) ). I guess that, in some sense, she is right (let's see: the list begins with Andre Matos... :-) ).

    [], Roger...

P.S.: Actually, the direct translation into English of the word I put here as "gays" isn't exactly gays, not in the pejorative sense, but saying that they are too much delicate to be tough men :-) (I don't know how it should be written in English -- jammers brasileiros: alguem tem nocao de como "bichinhas" poderia ser traduzido? :-) )

Hell, I'd take it as a compliment to be compared to Hitler. Quite a bit was accomplished through his regime (aside from the wonton destruction and mindless slaughter). And he was a pretty good artist, too. Very charismatic person. Started as a soldier in a unit in WWI. Eventually becomes a dictator over a small empire. I'm not saying that he was a good person, but he set out to do something and he accomplished it. I respect him for that much. Remember, the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world... Do.

I bet I get alot of flame mail for that. Be careful though, you might not like my responses.

    2 things:

1.) That drumbeat in "Hot For Teacher" is overdubbed 4 times! Alex V= an Halen doesn't really play that all at once. It's unhumanly possible. You'd need a couple extra legs and arms to play it! 2.) Even though I like Van Halen, Alex Van Halen isn't really that go= od, and players like Portnoy, Bruford, and Peart are on a totally differe= nt plateau, and can play circles around drummers like Alex Van Halen.

I personally think Freddy sung (sang?) circles around KJLB, but yeah, the upper register thing, the generally powerful voice -- if you don't listen to both back-to-back, there are definately similarities.

Yes, but the question is -- can MP play better than 4 Alex Van Halens? The thing is -- AVH overdubbed the thing 4x, but MP was playing it live -- so, even if it wasn't humanly possible, this is Mike "Animal" Portnoy we're talking about.

I guess the real question is -- how close did he get to playing like the record? Or did they even do that part?

(Sending a copy to the sylvian list because everyone there might not have heard this much-discussed group.)

Talk Talk is hard to describe. They're not metal, not similar to DT in any way, but they are progressive. Not progressive rock, the only similarity they have to any classic progrock album is to King Crimson's ISLANDS. Minimal at times, quiet, yet thickly orchestrated at times. All moved by Mark Hollis's anguished voice and ringing guitar.

This song is from the last Talk Talk album, LAUGHING STOCK. "Ascension Day" is probably the most upbeat song on the album, but I love it to death. I sometimes can't believe just how brilliant this piece of music is, especially as the guitar turns into barely controlled cacophony thundering into a PMU ending.

There is a sample at http://www.afn.org/~afn39111/ascension.zip of the song. If you like it, the album will be worth your while, as will SPIRIT OF EDEN, the Talk Talk album right before it. I hear that O'rang (Talk Talk members minus Hollis) and Mark Hollis solo (not available in America) are great as well.

The 2.8 meg mp3 is in 44k mono, because I don't have the disk space for more, but that doesn't really matter because it's only meant as a sample. The file is zipped to avoid cooking of the mp3 by Netscape.

The song will be around for a week. A week from Monday, it will disappear from the face of the earth.

I'm not sure what to bring you next week. I'm thinking about some old King's X.

I saw Anthrax in Club Rio when I was 18. Yeah, Club Rio is all ages :) And it's a pretty spiffy venue too ;) I'll be sure to be there, and YES, we will have about 5-10 ytsejammers, 2-3 full bands worth of people (Obscure, PoetShaker, and Th!nkAdectomy), about 5-10 other friends of ours, and we're gonna take over the Hooters in Tempe :)

Okay, SAVATAGE question. On The Wake of Magellan, at 0:55 into track 7 ("Paragons of Innocence"), the band goes into the same melody as Bobby Brown's "Humpin' Around". Anyone else hear this?! Hey, shutttup, I was in junior high once :)
