Apologies for interrupting up the anti/pro-Bahr all-star spectacul-ar...

A friend lent me a CD, "Spectrum" by a guy named Billy Cobham. I had no
idea what to expect, but was pretty easily blown away by the end of it. I
reckon it to a Mahavishu-esque sound. Fusion maybe? Did a bit o' research
and found out the reason it resembles Mahavishnu Orchestra *probably*
stemmed from him being in the band! Anyhow, anybody that likes MO should
*definitely* check out this album. Intense drumming and an overall
instruemtnal 'tightness'. The bassist is an animal (and has appeared on
more albums than even Tony Levin...well, maybe not that many).

Speaking of Levin, is anybody else here going to the B.L.U.E. show at The
    Birchmere this Wednesday?

Hmmm. My impressions are based more on the newsgroup than the mailing list
you mention below I've heard about that list second hand but never actually
read it, while I have checked out the newsgroup. I'll defer to your

In early 1995, I read a bunch of comments on The National Midnight Star
raving about this "Dream Theater" band. I bought a CD by them and was
    amazed. They rock. Thanks, guys.

In early 1996, I read a bunch of comments on the Ytsejam raving about this
"Tori Amos" chick. I bought a CD by her and was amazed. They rock.
    Thanks, guys.

In mid-1996, I read a bunch of comments on The National Midnight Star
raving about this "King's X" band. I didn't buy anything by them until a
couple of months ago. I unfortunately should have bought it a LONG time
ago. They rock. Thanks, guys. (Especially Ruth Goodman... do any of you
remember her from TNMS and know what she's up to now? She was the Queen of
    Deep Rush Thoughts <g>.)

Moral: if people on mailing lists recommend certain artists, check 'em out.
It's worth your while. Sure, I've had a share of some I didn't like, but
overall they rock. The only "good" music I've gotten from MTV in the past
four years was Trans-Siberian Orchestra. (They rock too <g>.)

I don't know about that. I look at it this way. These are 4 extremely
talented musicians. Spontaneity comes along with that. The jell factor
is part of it, too. I see it all the time with the great jazz players.
They just have that ability to get up there, and out of nowhere, just

Good Lord, I hope not. A person who becomes content with how he plays should either just move on to a different instrument or take up toal painting. <sp?> I don't think any musician can ever be good enough. There are masters in one area; people who can take their abilities as far as they can go in say, jazz. But then a whole new world opens if they try to play classical, or rock, or with themselves (cough, cough), I mean, other styles of music. Try something new for awhile and see how it can change what you already know. It makes a ton of difference. :)

Time for a show review.... Friday, April 10th -- The Shack, Anaheim, CA

Well, I began the long drive out to CA with Nathan "Mr. Savatage" Bradley (http://www.savatage.com) early Friday morning... rolled into Anaheim around 5 or 6 pm (after getting plenty of film so Nate could shoot some live photos <appearing on the web site very soon!>)... Met up with the guys from Ocean Seven (Hi Rob!) got our tickets and went in the club. A fairly small, typical bar type club... this would mean a good view of the band! (That's just me trying to look at the bright side of everything!)... Also met up with Brett (a crazy Fates fan who flew down from Oregon!). The opening acts were as follows: Push Comes II Shove - A local band, who Nate and I dubbed the "All Cliche Band", every song they performed and even the name of their band was an exercise in exploiting a tired old cliche... Oh well, some people there seemed to enjoy it. Rick from Ocean Seven commented that their cover of "I Don't Believe in Love" sounded like it was sung by Grover from Seasame Street... Very astute observation! :-) Next on was Fallen Reality, I couldn't really get a good listen to these guys, I'll have to wait for someone else to review them. Ocean Seven was on next. Keep an eye out for these guys! This band definately has some killer potential. Sort of Fates-esque with a good bit of Marillion thrown in there. I definately want to hear what these guys come up with when they record some material (which I understand is very soon, right Rob? :-)... Plenty of instrumental talent, a very good singer (IMHO) and some interesting songs (how about a long concept piece entitled "A Gathering of Elements"). Very cool indeed. Check out a sound sample at http://progmetal.gmsnet.com/ocean7.html

Now, after a long delay Fates finally took the stage probably around midnight. Here is the setlist: A Pleasant Shade Of Gray Ivory Gate Of Dreams The Eleventh Hour Monument Prelude To Ruin At Fates Hands We Only Say Goodbye

Wow, quite a set! And they ran the clock out right up until 2am or so, when the club booted us all out. The band was spot on! Jason Keazer from Divine Regale filled in on the keyboards and did a great job. Bernie Versailles (former guitarist with the band Agent Steel) rounded out dual guitar duties for the pre-APSOG songs, and he did a great job too. One really cool highlight of the evening is when me and some people up front began shouting "Zugabe" during APSOG... hehe, I think Ray got a kick out of that (we did it again at the Whiskey show, and Ray made a comment to the audience about it then)... Did not get to meet the band after the show as they took off pretty quick. I think the main reason was that the "back stage" area of this place was actually the parking lot! :-) I did get to meet up with some old and new friends during and after the show; the guys from Ocean Seven (Rob, Rick, Mike and Joe), Jodi, Kragen from Prototype, Brett from Oregon, Wendy and her crew of friends, and the infamous Dr. Mosh (damn, that's a big goatee!)... :-) Now it was time for a quick drive to the hotel to crash for a few hours... Must get up early to get the photos of Fates Warning, that my friend Nate took, developed...

It seems odd that people would throw morality into capitalism. If all you see about Michael Bahr is business, and people are eventually getting what they expected, then morality doesn't even come into it, moral judgements don't even come into it. If the wait was too long, then don't do business--unless of course you feel that the product is worth it. However, I see what Michael Bahr is doing as a favor. He is giving us an opportunity to get a hold of things that some of us do not have easy access to. The money is a direct compensation for labor and parts. Also, a delayed shipment is not the same as being 'ripped off.' The product is not something which is worth less with time. It seems apparent that we can rely on Michael Bahr to eventually give us what we paid for, which is safer than dealing with someone we don't know anything about. It seems he has avowed to improve his 'business,' and I believe that. Also on another thread, I have never reached the point at which I have become 'satisfied' with my playing, though I do at times become satisfied with the way I play a particular piece. I think that Mozart, Beethoven and Mahler have also been at times satisfied with some things that they wrote, and were not so much concerned with improving their works, but with developing them. I doubt anyone becomes truly satisfied with their ability (to the point at which they stop improving), though I hope that most people can look back and be on most levels satisfied with what they have done. -Jun-Dai

    Hey Jammers,

A week ago I saw a RUSH bootleg at a local music store. Judging by the track-listing, it's a Roll The Bones bootleg. The title of it escapes me right now, but the cover was this awsome close-up deal of Neil Peart and his monster drum kit. It seemed to be a photo during the show. There was a sticker on the case that read "Import."

Anyone out there have this boot or know if it's worth buying? It was a 2-CD boot priced at $54.

    Appreciate the help,

Saturday, April 11th -- The Whiskey, Hollywood, CA

Well, Nate and I began this day with dropping off some film to get developed (Yes! Gotta love those 25 minute photo places). Began the slow drive to Los Angeles (it was raining and SoCalers still don't know how to drive when it is wet!)... Once down in Hollywood, we decided to get a few of the really good pictures blown up and signed at the show if possible (big grin). We got down to Hollywood, secured a hotel room very close to the Whiskey and headed to the Rainbow Bar & Grill to meet up with more Fates Fanatics(tm). Meet up with the guys from Ocean Seven again, walked into the Whiskey and Fates was still sound checking (if memory serves me correct it was "At Fates Hands"). We didn't want to bug them too much so we headed off for the Rainbow. Meet up with Brett from Oregon again, some other Fates fans (I am bad with remembering names)... Also met up with some Ytsejammers and IRC regulars, Rick Audet (Spine) and Kerowyn(sp?) who drove down from the Bay area. It's good to put some faces with the names! Anyway, hung out there for a while and then headed back over to the Whiskey. Rob was nice enough to get Nate a photo pass for the show (as long as he promised to take some pics of Ocean Seven, too!) <I still haven't seen how these pics turned out, but should by next week>... Met up with more people from the show at The Shack (Jodi and crew, Wendy and friends, Amy Alder and Tracy Vera (Hi Tracy!), Dr. Mosh (big kudos to Mosh for scoring me a backstage pass! Thanks, man!), and probably a ton of others I am forgetting... But anyway, here were the openers: Vendetta - Not too bad of a band, sort of proggy-metal with lots of keyboards. Although you could barely hear the guitar, they sounded like they might be a pretty decent band. Ocean Seven - Tonight's show was even better than the prior night, probably because I was more familliar with the material. They put on a great show, even though the setlist was trimmed down a bit. Hopefully Mosh will put some more sound clips up at http://progmetal.gmsnet.com/ocean7.html <hint, hint)... :-) Prototype - a pretty heavy local band, not too bad... Might have to check out one of their CDs sometime... Now on to Fates...

Same set list as Friday night: A Pleasant Shade Of Gray Ivory Gate Of Dreams The Eleventh Hour Monument Prelude To Ruin At Fates Hands We Only Say Goodbye

And once again a great performance. I was right up front again (Yes, Ray, I will attend the next Fates show and stand back where the sound is better :-)... Ray also noticed our little "Zugabe" chant and made a short comment about it to the crowd (I am not sure how many caught that one! :-) After the show I was able to meet up with the band (except Mark who was busy else where), get my photos from the other night signed (thanks guys!), and enjoy the lavish dressing room of the Whiskey (hehe). Hopefully, I'll be able to get pictures from both nights up on the web site soon. Hung out with the guys from Ocean Seven a little more, before heading to the hotel to rest up for the long drive home. Would have liked to stay in town a few more days to catch Spock's Beard, but work always seems to interfere with my plans <grin>. BTW, Jim also said that Spock's is one of his favorite bands right now, go check them out. Well, that's about it... I am sure I am forgetting some things, but it was one action packed weekend, well worth every penny! You guys in Europe are definately in for a treat!
