While not answering the question....and to make things seem all the more
hopeless.... :)
I saw Primus last Thursday night in Brisbane (Australia)....they were
great...apart from the "too many people, too little room" factor (ie
enough heat relaunch the Hindenburg) and this apparent necessity for the
crowd to jump around like a Gummi Bear....but Les Claypool not only does
the most amazing things on his bass...he does it with remarkable
ease...the bastard... :)

I have to correct you D, their is a great boot from the 'RTB' tour
called
'Mirrors', Okaland CA, 30/01/92 OXY 003/4 which I own, the sound is near
perfect,
from a soundboard source and the set list is great too :)
The boot is still available online, if anyone wants more info on this
boot

This is the unfortunate truth. In my opinion there is exactly one good
RTB tour boot: "Mirrors". It's from the Oakland '92 show, and it was
taken from a master DAT that didn't have the flaws that the "Rush N
Roulette 92" boot of the same show had (sound problems). As boots go,
Mirrors is actually fairly common, so rather than advertising that I can
provide CDRs of it, I encourage people to go out there and get

fuckin' thing ANYWHERE. Don't make the same mistake.

Yes, please!! I really worry because I know Mike reads the Jams and he

the May 20th show because both he and Derek have discs coming to them
(Stream for both and a couple other titles for Derek) and I can make

I have no problem flaming this one. JON OLIVA is Savatage. And Johnny Lee Middleton is the last of the CORE of Savatage. Jon is a genius. Savatage is no Dream Theater when it comes to being masters of their instruments. I think most people would agree that Jon is Savatage because the majority of the posts have been that they like HOR, DWD, and TWoM - all written AFTER the death of Criss Oliva. So there is no question that Jon is the MAN. As far as his voice, I think his voice is great. I love The Hall of the Mountain King, Gutter Ballet, and Streets. In fact, when I saw the Edge of Thorns video with Zak I said "Who the fuck is this guy?" I immediately hated him. I have since come to appreciate his voice, but I can actually say I like Jon's voice better. Maybe it is because I have listened to Savatage for a very long time (Damn I am an old fart - I'm 24). I do think that Edge of Thorns is a great album however. Degrees of Sanity is great. I can handle just about any rag on Savatage members - but when you touch one of the Oliva's - thems fightin' words.
And I don't care if Paragons of Innocence is Humpin' Around. I think it is a great song. I don't even get annoyed that it is Humpin' Around. In fact, I am going to enter my fantasy world and ignore time and just tell myself Humpin' Around is a copy of Paragons of Innocence :o)

How can you say that EoT was free of Jon's control? He co-produced the album, co-wrote every song and played keyboards on it. Maybe he wasn't in charge of the whole thing but I'm positive he would have had a say in what happened.
For what it's worth, I think that The Wake of Magellan is Savatage's weakest album since Fight for the Rock. I still love it, though, after however many months I've had it for. Just have to get the US version now. Damn bonus tracks... --- Mr Merlo wrote:

Well, I don't own all that many boots, but of those that I have, "Mirrors", from the RTB tour, is the best I have ever heard. Brilliant stuff. Great, even.
Awaiting the "Never Stand Still" boot from the TFE tour, which should be arriving in the next fortnight or so. The only other Rush boot I have is a piece of crap, also from the RTB tour, called "One", or something. Hey, I was surprised to actually see a Rush boot in a store here and I overreacted, OK? --- Obligatory Mike Bahr comment:

I won't bore anyone with yet another gig report; suffice to say that the concert in Glasgow was great.
Good things that happened:
- Meeting a very drunk Mike Portnoy outside his hotel the night before the gig. Quote: "Man, I gotta call my wife . . ."
- Bumping into Jordan Rudess and Rod Morgenstein three times just wandering around town. They're both incredibly friendly guys, and were happy to hang around and chat. In fact, we were browsing through the Dream Theater section in an HMV store when Jordan walked up to us and asked "Are you going to their concert tonight? We're opening for them!"
- Talking to Dream Theater outside the venue, seeing recent photos of young Miss Portnoy, and witnessing John Myung's heroic struggle to open the door of the hotel minibus . . .
- Dream Theater playing Voices again.
- The incredible end-of-show jam, consisting of One, War Pigs, Smoke on the Water, The Trooper, Yyz, and a couple of others I can't remember. Mike and Derek seemed to be totally pumped up, and every time we thought they'd finally finished for good, they started off again . . . wonderful!
- Being handed a drumstick by Mike.
- Walking into HMV this lunchtime to discover that as well as having FII in the normal Dream Theater section, they'd also put it in the "Best Sellers" stand by the door. Cool.
- Hanging out with Adrian, Jeremy, Chloe, Matthias and Tony, and encountering ex-ytsejammer Edd Ballinger . . . Dream Theater fans are probably the nicest bunch of people on the planet. :-)

dammit, i KNOW i've seen it transcribed somewhere. i'll look through my boxes of music, see if i have it, but don't hold your breath....
ok, for you (and all the bassists out there), i've got something everyone should get. it's an instructional book called "standing in the shadows of motown," and it's about the music of james jamerson. he was one of the founding fathers of the electric bass, and pretty much played on all of the famous motown tracks in its heyday. comes with two cds and all the music transcribed (no tab). the cds are brilliant, because they're the tracks (like "heard it through the grapevine", for example) with novox, just instrumental (and the bass prominent in the mix, of course). the players on it are an all-star collection, including will lee, chuck rainey, billy sheehan, geddy lee, and dozens of others.
i guarantee, this book will help everyon'e bass playing. i'm not saying people are gonna run out and do prog covers of "gettin' ready" or "i'll be there," but this will totally improve your groove and pocket playing.
