    Hi, everyone,

Just curious. I'm one who's never had the fortune of being at a DT
show. I'm probably going to be
at the HOB shows in L.A. or Maritime Hall in SF. I was just wondering
who was going to be there.

    Hi all

here are some reviews of new stuff that has found its way from my local dealer into my diverse stereos.

    HEAVENWOOD - Swallow

Heavenwoods first album 'Diva' was a good debut, but they didn't really have a clear style and also suffered from being in the shadows of Moonspell as being the 'other' Portugese band. Their second effort 'Swallow' changes all that. The music and sound is often very reminiscent of how Paradise Lost used to be during their 'Icon' period with a good helping of Sentenced thrown in. Lots of good riffs, a few non-wanky solos, tasteful use of symphonic keys sometimes replaced by sequencers and mostly clear vocals. There are also very strong influences of Sisters Of Mercy, epecially on the track 'Shadowflower', which is one of my favourites (I'm sure I can hear Doktor Avalanche in the background). The other highlight of the album has got to be 'Downcast', which features Liv Kristine Espenaes (Theatre Of Tragedy) and Kai Hansen (Gamma Ray) as guest vocalists. Not doomy, but certainly gothic/dark and with lots of metal. Well worth 9/10.

LIV KRISTINE - Deus Ex Machina

I reserved my opinion of Liv Kristine's solo efforts until I got the full-length album, and I'm glad I did. To start with, the album contains 3 certain hits in the form of 'In The Heart Of Juliet', 'Take Good Care' and the brilliant '3 AM' (a duet featuring Nick Holmes from Paradise Lost). This album is a long way removed from the gothic doom of her main band Theatre Of Tragedy, where her voice is just one of many aspects of the music. Here it is the lead instrument. Her clear and delicate voice sometimes has some of the ethno and mystic folk-pop qualities of Loreena McKennit. The music is mainly keyboard-based with a few guitar parts here and there, while the songs have some of the purity of the water in her native Norwegian fjords. I just feel better and happier when I've listened to this album, especially the almost techno song 'Good Vibes Bad Vibes'. There is nothing on this album that I would change or that I think can be done better. This will certainly be one of my top 5 for this year and deserves 10/10.

    7ZUMA7 - 7Zuma7

I know very little about this band other than that there are 4 members, they come from Holland and I like them. This album is a godsend to those of us who are still mourning the passing of Kyuss. Only 5 tracks, but these are enough to show what this band is capable of. 22 minutes of dirty and very distorted low grooves, perfect desert/stoner rock. They don't quite have the ability of Kyuss to play those slow-building orgasmic jams that were an essential part of Kyuss, but I think (hope) that this is only a matter of time. My personal favourite is the very original and bizarre cover of Donna Sommer's disco hit 'Hot Stuff'. Ideal music for barbeques, lots of cold beer and really pissing off the neighbours. Kyuss fans- remember where you read this first. A worthy 8/10.

THE DESERT SESSIONS - Volume I/Volume II

For 'The Desert Sessions' read 'Kyuss', for that is who those is (well almost). Josh Homme, Alfredo Hernandez and Brant Bjork got together in a studio for a week at the end of last year (sound familiar?) with some other guys, including Ben Sheperd (ex-Soundgarden) and John McBain (Monster Magnet) for what is essentially a big instrumental jam (sound even more familiar?). These tracks have what 7Zuma7 doesn't - they are very heavy on jams, especially the killer track 'Cake (Who Shit On The?)'. Dirty, dusty and with more grooves than my old LP collection. Real roller coaster stuff that picks you up on a journey into the unknown. Spaced out, acid and dope are words that are readily associated with these driving tones. I want more of this stuff. Not an album that will win Kyuss any new fans, but a must for anybody who likes this genre of music as much as I do. 10/10

ORANGE GOBLIN - Frequencies From Planet Ten

Heavy and psychadelic! Full of the left-over riffs that Black Sabbath never used in the Ozzy years, this band steer between Cathedral and the early days of Pink Floyd. The whole album has a very strong 70s feel about it, real retro metal like Spiritual Beggars play. Rocking, dripping with very catchy riffs and full of old hippy images (how else can you explain a song title like 'Song Of The Purple Mushroom Fish'?). A fine album if you like old Sabbath or new Cathedral, and this will also be ideal for upsetting the neighbours again when the weather clears up and the barbie season can begin. 9/10

    Nuff said.

stay safe and happy listening Neil Gallop (nga@software-ag.de) Currently playing: Dearly Beheaded - Chamber Of One

They played a long, good set, with a lot of material off FII. The Fasten Your Seatbelts part was cool. I was on the gallery, so I saw everything! I laughed my ass off when Mike started throwing drumsticks at Derek. I'lll need some time to figure the set-list out. John's guitar solo was not what I'd expected. It included some scale- based sequences played really fast (pure shredding IOW), and a piece of Flight of the Bumble Bee, which was cool. The sol-part didn't seem planned or structured, or planned at all, kind of a spare-of-the moment deal. It was totally different from those more jam-like solos that I've heared on different boots plus the Marquee CD, and the Tokyo video.

    Later!

Quoting Darren DeLoach: To anyone in Texas who has been to the Bronco Bowl before: I have a five year old who's also a DT fan. I've taken him to outdoor rock concerts before, but I don't know anything about the Bronco Bowl (relatively recent transplant to Texas). Is this a club? Is it the sort of place suitable for a five year old to be in?

Appreciate any guidance you can offer, he'd love to go but I need to know what sort of place it is first before I tell him about the show... ============================

Darren, I live in Dallas and have been to the Bronco Bowl on many occasions. Most recently to see George Carlin and Megadeth. The Bronco Bowl is, for the most part, a very nice bowling alley, hence the name Bronco Bowl. Attached to the side of the building is a very professional concert arena. This arena has SEATS that you must by tickets for and sit in. There is a small area up by the stage for standing room. This will serve the people who have seating near the stage to go stand during the concert. People with upper level tickets are not able to go to the stage. Personally I've always enjoyed going to concerts with seating (Dallas: Reunion Arena, Coca-Cola Starplex, Fair Park Music Hall, etc...) rather than clubs with standing room only. So this will be MUCH BETTER than that shitty "Deep Ellum Live" club Dream Theater played in last time on the Awake tour Nov. 16, 1994. Email me personally and I'll give you directions to the Bronco Bowl. Your child will be safe there as he will have his own seat next to you. You could even go inside the place before the concert to get an idea. There's lots of extra things to do there besides just bowl. Hope this helps others in North Texas that have not been there.

    Hello 'jammers,

Well, I have just been catching up on some 'jams and the Dream Theatre posts caught my eyes, because in the liner notes of I Mother Earth's Scenery and Fish they thank Dream Theatre. I think this is because they are Canadian, they always like to spell center as centre and theater as theatre, just like the word colour. Well, they thanked Dream Theater because they toured with DT for a month. Just thought another tidbit on the Dream Theatre thing would be interesting.
