I wasn't going to respond to the Sony thread because it is massively "NDTC",
but I can't just read post after post and not jump in.
First - I have recently purchased A LOT of Sony Products. You guys suck. Now
I am waiting for a big explosion. I have a Sony - CD Player, DVD Player, TV,
Receiver, and I was thinking about a Sony S-VHS. My receiver has a 5 year
warranty (it's the ES line) so I guess I can atleast expect to be okay for 5
years. The reason I picked Sony was because it consistently put out - better
sound and video than the other models. Now I'm afraid of what will happen
right after all the warranties expire !!!!!
Secon - I have a Pioneer Audio Tape deck and I don't think the damn thing will
ever die. It is the shit. As far as Panasonic goes - I think it is crap.
Not quality, just the fact that the audio and video is inferior from the get
go. NEXT, Kenwood is in my opinion the lowest of the low for quality. I
bought a Kenwood Dolby Digital receiver - and after 4 months - it was putting
out a buzzing noise. I took it back to the place I bought it and they said
"We have been getting back EVERY SINGLE KENWOOD product we have sold recently"
Kenwood is definitely worse than Sony.
I also checked out Denon and Yamaha. To me, without spending an $10K for a
stereo system - Sony ES (that's the high end Sony line), Denon, and Yamaha are
the only way to go for superior sound. I can't comment on longevity of Sony
now. I just got the stuff.
Any comments on audio/video products as far as the most solid company. I'd
love to hear it.
I wonder what brand of DAT Mike Portnoy has. It always seems to come in in a
pinch :o)

I've bought several sony products. My discman is about 5-6 years old,
and still works like a gem after much abuse. THe 27" tv is also old and
still works fine. I would not buy a sony reciever though. Sony DVD
players are top of the line.

I don't have the liner notes here at my desk (I'm at work . still. ugh) but I seem to recall that The Way it Used to Be was listed as having been recorded in a location of a studio-type name. If someone who has the liners handy could confirm that, that would be fantastic. The impression I'm getting is that they probably do have at their disposal (seeing as they are wicked cool) some higher technology equipment for recording stuff, and the recording is very very nice sounding. That could be my amateurism showing through in the fact that I don't know a whole lot about good from bad (well, I do know that the 4 track me and a few friends made sounded worse than the noise my computer is making STILL deltreeing windows) but it was pretty decent.
Producers mucking around with a song is one thing, but I think that having some extra and external opinion can do a group some good from time to time. Even a group like Dream Theater that I worship to no end. I could be totally out of line, but I am also in the process of acquiring some of the demos for FII. I'm curious to see how they changed from demo to final cut. The demo of Your Or Me was a most interesting eye-opener of how some songs can be one way in the beginning and then be changed in the end. (I still remember reading that it kept changing from one to another during production (: ) The subject matter seemed to change drastically as well if I don't miss my guess.

I agree with you Mauricio (about the similarities with U2 and being cool :), as well as many jammers. But I always thought that Speak To Me had a really strong U2 influence, too. AND the demo version Take Away My Pain, because of the guitar arrangements. Is it just me? Curious...

Why, I'm glad you asked! I'm so sorry to the rest of you for posting twice on the subject in one day, but I have some MAJOR updates to the page. It now contains venue information, directions, hints and tips, and links to the venues' Web sites (well, links to 2 outta 3 ain't bad).
Also new, 2 of the venues (Bayou Theater in Houston and Bronco Bowl in Dallas) have said that details are still being ironed out, but they acknowledge the shows are planned. It's important to note that ** Tickets are NOT on sale yet ** as far as I can tell. Send any and all updates to me!

I also have a (still working) Walkman in my drawer, and Sony 5 disc carousal player that seems to be still working pretty well (it wants to skip sometimes on the first track of a disc...pain in the ass when dubbing tapes!). I also bought a Car Discman a few months back, and it still seems to be hanging in there. I have to admit, though, I haven't dropped it yet. The biggest disappointment that I've had with Sony was my 34" Sony XBR television. Just like someone said earlier, they have a finite life span. Mine was approx. 5 years old when it took a dump last month. According to my repairman, they don't usually blow the tubes, but rather the circuit boards that make up the "guts" of the unit. My problem was the high voltage side completely fried out. When they repaired the boards and put them back in, it blew another small board attached to the yoke (back of the tube). I'm supposed to get my TV back tomorrow, and I've been waiting 4 weeks! It better work for another 5 years after spending this much time and money to get it repaired ($275 regardless of what they have to fix). The 1981 model JC Penney 19" color TV I've been using while the Sony is in the shop still works great (rotary knobs and all!).
Sorry for the lack of DTC....I wonder how James' voice is doing today? You know, he actually did a LOT of shows before he ran into problems this time. Much better than during the Awake tour! Mike, tell James that we are pulling for him to get better soon. Hopefully, he'll be back in top form for the summer US dates.
Oh yeah...I was going to take the Majesty logo to a sign maker next week. I want them to make up some pre-cut (inside spaces and outline of the logo would be cut out) vinyl window stickers with the logo and YTSEJAM in lower case letters below it like the original Ytsejam t-shirts. I'm going to have some made up in white (cuz I like the way it looks on a dark tinted window). I don't imagine that these will cost me much. Is anybody else interested in said stickers? If so, I'll order extras and send them out for cost + shipping. I'll post more details next week after I visit the sign shop.

Hey guys,
I thought I'd make a quick post since I haven't seen anyone make note of this. The venues scheduled for DT shows in Texas are medium sized halls/theaters, not just clubs. The Bayou Theater in Houston seats 2,000 - 3,000 depending on whether it's general admission. The Bronco Bowl in Dallas is all reserved, and I think it seats about 2,000.
To my knowledge, these are the first DT headlining shows in venues of this size in the U.S. I congratulate them on their move up. I mean hell, Yes played the Bronco Bowl on their last tour, so they're getting into very good company here. :)

Well, had to get in on this conversation... have had some good experiences w/ Sony & some bad ones. My Sony cordless phone (900 MHz), walkman, 5CD changer, tape deck and TV have been very good. On the other hand, my Sony diskman and Sony reciever have sucked, and have had neutral to bad experience w/ Sony VCRs... (I had an extended warentee (sp?) on my receiver, but hte same damn problem popped up 4 times while covered, now it is out of coverage, and I am replacing it)... As Deetlit said, the audiophile stuff is much better (curretnly trying to decide betweek an Onkyo, NAD, and Denon receivers)

In *my* house, most of our electric appliances are Sony brand (our three TVs, my CD player, the CD/cassette player, the VCR, etcetera), and never had any trouble with them. The Sony products we have over here are made in Japan. Are the US ones made in Mexico or something?

My NADs rule!!!! (still talking about audio equipment)..I bought a cd player and receiver about 12 years ago..at first i wasn't very impressed becuase of their lack of buttons (the more buttons something has the better it is right?) but i grew to love the sound and still to this day the only problem I've had with either of them is when I blew a fuse in the reciever, was too broke at the time to buy a new one, stuck tin foil in place of the fuse (meaning to get a new fuse in the next couple days, never did)..and its been running for the past 5 years like that :) Anyhow..just wanted to give me vote for that NADs
