Hey, I can't find any information on how to unsubscribe to
the list. We are changing Internet providers, and this account
will not be good after April 17, 1998. If the moderator
could please take me off the list, I'd appreciate it. I'll
hook up again, after we get a new account.

    Thanks,

Tempest, to me, is Celitc first, prog second. Way too Celtic for me. I
    don't
even see how they got signed to MC. I'll sell you thier latest for $8.

I happened to catch Sonic Youth on Saturday Night Live a while back, and they were absolutely horrid - unendurable, even. They are easily the second worst band I have ever seen (first being a band called Komeda, that opened for Ben Folds at Irving Plaza and caused me to actually *leave* downstairs until they were done.

Of course, this is all my opinion.........:P

Matt Stanich <mwstanic@mtu.edu>: > I would not buy a sony reciever though.

    heh :) Here's my story :)

I have a Sony model whatever receiver. One day a little flashing "P" comes on the display. I'm thinking it's Polarity or Power? Something in the power supply? You turn the power button off, and it enters this cycle the surround sound led indicator fading up from a dim glow to a bright shine, then a relay can be heard clicking. This cycle repeats infinitely it seems. Accompanied will the relay click now and then, a pop can be heard in the speaker. This thing is serious messed in the head :)

If I turn the power button on, a high pitched squealing kind of sound can be heard during the power on shiz, before the relay for the sound kicks on. Sometimes the unti will power up fine, without the squeal. Usually though, if the squeal is heard during power up, then as soon as the relay kicks in the that little red flashing "P" will appear and the unit won't work. Also, if I manage to get the thing working, after some random amount of time, the sound will just cut out, and the "P" arrives.

Look, I paid like $200 for it like 7 years ago. It's a 100W unit, I don't really care at this point about it, I just want to hear some music!

So naturally, the delicate side of me decides to experiment, hehehehe

I discover that during the first few seconds of power, most improtantly before that relay engages, that if I apply one or more smacks to the right location of the unit, until that squeal goes away, then the unit powers up.

Ok, here we go :) I'm listening to FII for the first time, just getting off on it. The thing cuts out. I curse. I go over to the thing, power off, power on, and deliver a PUNCH to the side of this thing, during power up.

I am THIS close to tossing this thing out the window! I begin taking all of society's collective anger at life, out on this amplifier. It's probably a 30 cent diode or something, so I guess I should go get it repaired right? Naw, it's more fun to show it who is boss :)

Suffice it to say, there's quite a big dent on the side of this thing :)

Deny me my music? Stand back! I am strong! I am woman :)

Now does Sony suck? You tell me :) I dunno, it's pooched, but with some serious abuse, it works! Should a delicate piece of equipment continue to work after being slapped upside the head repeatedly? hehehehe

Gimme my old Technics receiver back!!! With that two ton heavy analog dial thing to tune with. I'll also take JBL, Onkyo, Yamaha, Bang & Olufson, KLH anyday!

I live in Mexico and I can tell you no Sony products are made here, and if they were... why would they be worse than the Japan made ones???, please do not discriminate third world countries so easily!, much stuff is made here in Mexico that is exported all over the world with very high quality standards. Besides, Sony must have a quality control so all the equipment made by them no matter where in the world meets exactly the same standards, whether they are good or bad.

Ummmmm I thought the standard would be Tascam. That's what I have :-) It does eat some DAT tapes every once in a while though, but I think that was my fault.

Someone mentioned self produced bands... I think Queensr=FFche's Promised= Land is the best example of how a band can be self produced, sound great and put out what is arguably (very arguably for some, not me) the best album in their career. Their next CD, HitNF, had a bunch of people giving oppinions (producer, new sound engineer) and though I still like the CD a bit, one can't deny it was definitely a step down compositional and sounding wise... Plus, self produced doesn't mean you're doing it in your backyard. You could still use a top-notch studio, the best engineers and it would be called self-produced. While the role of the producer is not something that is clearly defined, it is assumed that he is the person that takes all the decisions or has the last word in them, regarding sounds, arrangement changes, performance and artistic direction.

    Hey guys,

Something funny happened both to me and Frank, who also plays guitar in my band. Both our Ibanez, at the same week, simply went completely off setup! Being more experienced with setting up guitars, I took his and adjusted it - couple turns on the tross rod (his was too tight), and it took a lot of adjusting to the Floyd Rose because it went completely off - as if the strings turned much heavier all of a sudden. I got it all fixed though.

Yet my 7-string is beyond repair right now, unless I get somebody to produce me tighter springs I guess. I have no more room to screw the backplate inside the body and the Floyd Rose is still far from flat (and I used to have it actually so tight that the tremolo wouldn't go back, only down - like Eddie Van Halen does to his Floyds).

I know it probably happened due to weather changes (this is Florida we're talking about - even though Frank's was in the case all the time), but if anybody had this happen and can give me suggestions of what I can do, please e-mail me privately, I appreciate it greatly...

Back to our regularly scheduled jam...

Umm, not sure . . . Myung is interviewed/transcribed in two bass magazines at the moment (Bassist has a transcription of Burning My Soul by Nikki Brooks). One of the guitar magazines (I forget which one) has also told me that they have a Petrucci feature coming up. I think there may be one or two more things in the pipeline.

Ok, breaking the threads of how Sony products are bad or how bootlegging sucks or how celtic music can or can't be interesting, I'd now like to invite you fans of more extreme metal to participate on a new mailing list that's just came to existence this night. It's called Nectar and is dedicated to Opeth.

The motivation to such a list is mainly the fact that it's very hard to find information about underground bands (even those extremely progressive bands that existed in back in the 70's fit this category) and the Internet can help discussions and bring the fans closer to each other.

So, if you'd like to join this mailing list, here's the vital information:

    - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Nectar, Opeth's mailing list, is UP! Its address is: * rbrito-nectar-request@linux.ime.usp.br (to (un)subscribe); * rbrito-nectar@linux.ime.usp.br (to post messages to the list). To subscribe, just send an empty message with the word subscribe to the appropriate address (notice that you should know these addresses). To unsubscribe, just send a message to the same address, with the word unsubscribe in it (in the subject line or the body of the message). - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
