    Well..

    > Let's put it to a Ytsejam vote :) I cast my vote for more DT METAL!!

Um, yeah I'd have to agree with this, however, what DT is known for is a
little of everything. I mean, look at I&W and Awake. They were defiantly
full of metal but also had the good progressive stuff that DT is known for.
It wouldn't be DT if it wasn't.... um.... (for lack of a beter term) DT. DT
is their own style of music period.

However, while I still love FII, etc, something a little heavy thrown in
    would meet no objection.

    >basically a joke, but literally i have never seen drums tabbed anywhere,
Well.. I want to throw in a bone here.. I haven't been a drummer for long,
but the sheet music I have seen is on /regular/ notesheets, the different
tonehights representing different instruments.. Yes it can seem rather
confusing and uninuitive, but you get used to it.

    >i dont know its probably something like atleast a 20 piece set,
    >and a musical staff only having 5 lines,
yea.. But you have 10 different possibilities... And then you jsut take two
musical staffs.. It is REALLY hell to read it.. But after you play through
it VERY VERY slowly you get the idea, and it is possible to start speeding up.

Another way I have seen it done is to use the previously mentioned
technique, and then put it into patterns, like in MOD files.

    Yes it's complicated
But for complicated pieces it's still (for me anyway) easier then figure
    out every part manually.

blade? I got The newest CD, Kindness of Strangers, today from Joey
Severance at Metal Blade, and It is amazing. I guarentee in the top 10 prog
    cd's of the 90's (i'll bet!!)
Anyone got cool Spock's info? I understand they're one of Mikey P's

Also, any opening bands named for Chitown?

Just to let you guys know:

Marillion, although signed to a label in both here and the UK, has
their own label - Racket Records. Here they release live soundboard
material every so often (i believe they've released 7 or so - itchy can
let you in on the details), so it *is* something that DT could do.

I just don't know how many people (and don't say "I WOULD" because
we're the minority of DT fans, keep in mind) would buy them.

            just something to ponder.

Excuse my ignorance, but what is a piezo? (in layman's terms, please)

On the whole metal vs. prog DT debate.........

I've seen references to I&W as being DT's metal stuff. If I&W is their
metal, what do you consider to be their prog stuff? (personally, I think
of I&W as being the MOST PROGESSIVE, and not extremely metallic).
The only thing close to "metal" on I&W to me would be PMU, UaGM and
Metropolis (and at the same time, I consider UaGM and Metropolis VERY
    prog as well).
My idea of DT's metal would be stuff like The Mirror, Lie, BMS etc (and
generally speaking, I consider Awake to be their most "metal" album)

So, my question is how exactly do we define "progressive" and "metal"
and what differentiates "progressive metal" from "progressive hard
rock"? Also, what exactly is the definition of "power metal"?

Lastly, I saw this on the Savatage list, and thought some of you guys
    (and ladies) would be interested.

Well, you might want to subscribe to the Spock's Beard mailing list, THOUGHTS...

you can do that here: http://www.dreamt.org/spocksbeard
We've got 3/5 of the band subscribed to the list, and Neal Morse posts quite
    frequently.

You'll find no MP3s there... just wavs, aus & aiffs. Just break down and buy
    the cds...
like Mike said, you're going to do it anyway :o) I *think* you can still get
    them directly
from Radiant Records, although they have signed a distribution deal with Metal
    Blade...
you can find ordering information here:
    http://www.dreamt.org/spocksbeard/faq.html#cds

or you can definitely order them from me (I'm a bit faster and cheaper... no
    wait, that
doesn't sound quite right... you can get them quicker, and more
    inexpensively... yes,
that's what I mean to say), using this online order form:
    http://home.pacbell.net/ytsegirl/order.htm

Spock's Beard also has a video available (while supplies last) from their show
    in
Bochum, Germany (20JAN98). You can find information on that here:
    http://www.dreamt.org/spocksbeard/faq.html#video

I had the strange coincidence of listening to a certain song on the radio today and popping in a CD to hear another shortly after, and was struck by the similarity. Does anyone else hear a distinct sameness between Just Let Me Breathe and Tool's "AEnema"? I'm not usually a Tool fan, but this one had my eyebrows narrowing involuntarily. :)

Shh... Hate to send an e-mail to the whole list to deal with personal things, but there was no way...

OP777, please e-mail me. All e-mails I tried to send you bounced back today (and the reason seems to be that your local site has a problem with the mail exchanger). See:

----- Transcript of session follows ----- 553 ns.fsp.fi. config error: mail loops back to me (MX problem?) 554 <op777@ns.fsp.fi>... Local configuration error

Sorry for sending this message to the list, Roger...

The Real Frank Zappa book is a good light read, but I recently found Negative Dialectics of Poodle Play (fourth edition) at Books-a-Million. It is 600+ pages of analysis by some guy with an afterword by FZ. It is exactly like a term paper I might write for school - loads of hypothetical bullshit - but it has many, many quotes that are gems. It's published by St. Martin's Griffin, if anyone cares.

    Take care, Mark Peters swifty@auburn.net

Somebody's probably already beat me to the 'scoop', but...

The following official letter (press-release really) should explain things:

"After 15 long and fruitful years, Faith No More have decided to put an end to speculation regarding their imminent break up... by breaking up. The decision among the members is mutual, and there will be no pointing of fingers, no naming of names, other than stating, for the record, that "Puffy started it". Furthermore, the split will now enable each member to pursue his individual project(s) unhindered. Lastly, and most importantly, the band would like to thank all of those fans and associates that have stuck with and supported the band throughout its history. "

In collegiate news, the kid in front of me in Ethnomusicology today didn't know what the word "homophobe" meant. This guy's at least a sophomore in college. Aye-aye-aye...
