In my Perception class today (and Monday), we discussed music perception.
There are so many wacky things that go on top of all the really neat
fundamental plus harmonics (timbre) things...like the tritone illusion, the
octave illusion, and many other crazy things. The octave illusion and
another illusion (courtesy of Diana Deutsch) relate directly back to visual
perception (the Gestalt Theory of Similarity and also Proximity), which
relates strongly to biological perception, which relates directly to
evolutionary biology, and so-on. What I'm trying to say is twofold:

    1) if you're interested in music (seems like at least everyone on here
likes music enough to like DT), there are many relevant topics you can
discuss that are relevant to music in general, if not directly to the
    reason this list exists.

    2) if you're REALLY into music, you should really check out some of the
psychological and biopsychological research out there--it's so cool! Diana
has a book out, and there are many other famous researchers out there. :)

So, anyway, we can talk about Sony (a key manufacturer of items we use to
LISTEN to DT), and we can talk about other bands (influenced by,
influencing, similar to, or nothing like DT, because it's all music).
Hell, we should be allowed to talk about classical music here too because,
I can guarantee, most if not all of the DT members have played classical
music in their pasts, and probably were influenced by such composers as
J.S. Bach. We can talk about concerts, where we experience music from DT
or other bands, and so-on. Don't be so restrictive in what you think we
should talk about because, guaranteed, we can relate most of what we talk
about on this list back to music in general, if not DT directly. Hell, why
did I start to play guitar? John Petrucci man, that's all I have to say.
I could have stuck with playing just the oboe, but I didn't.

Anyway, I'm going to climb down from my lofty soapbox at this point. Go
ahead and flame me, but I really don't think we should be so limiting of
our topics of discussion. If a discussion gets out of hand, we may want to
tone it down, but heck, I'm game for chatting about a lot of stuff.

    Have a splendid day,

Erica Bonomi (who should be writing a paper about stuff she doesn't care
    about in the least)

ps: I forget my modes...I suck at theory. Been playing a wind instrument
    too long....

But if there were no other content during certain times, there would exactly
be NO OTHER CONTENT. We at ytsejam pride ourselves in being able to talk
about anything... and carry on a good conversation, we don't view this list

Geez, thanks for the compliment (I got called an expert!!) but next time ask something which doesn't require me to know music theory. :) :) Yes, I love Satch, but I couldn't tell you a thing about the theory behind his music. "I may not know about art, but I know what I like."

'Course, it'd probably help if I spent more than three weeks in a year playing my guitar.... *smirk*

But I want to make something CRYSTAL CLEAR: Who said we all *are* mature??? :-) I'm *NOT* mature. :-))) I'm very immature and I like immature music! :-) Bring me Another "Kill'em All", another "Ride the Lightning", another "Master of Puppets", another "Images & Words"! :-)

    Hey yall

I experienced the weirdest thing when I went to buy I&W from my local CD store.. (yes I am a fairly new DT fan) It had the right cover.. it had the right image printed on the cd.. But the music was AC//DC... I thought something like "huh? I didn't think Dream Theater did "Big Gun"..

Anyway.. Cause I listened to it in my car I could return it to the store, and bought Awake instead..

Now there is something else weird.. This time I bought the CD from CDnow.. And the end of Pull Me Under, it is very brutally cut off without any kind of ending... Is it /supposed/ to be like that? I don't think so.. It just suddenly stops and then Another Day starts..

I think it is rather too much of a coincidence that there should be something wrong TWICE with the I&W cd.. was there something wacky going on with the prodiction or something??

*pouts* I&W being my fave cd (because of Under A Glass Moon and Another Day) I would like it to be -complete- at least :)

As much fun as this would be in theory, I just don't feel the need to show what a poopyhead this guy is (any further). :) I sent him one email in private, and while he did apologize for calling me a racist, he still had to get that shot in that he was more mature than I am....

I mean, come on, we're dealing with somebody who doesn't have the balls to use the NAMES of the people he accuses and then spams the entire mailing list with forwards of flames he deserved. I know at least a couple of you tried, but the timing just wasn't there. Maybe this time around. Sorry about such short notice, but I didn't find out myself for sure until this week! Anyways, it'd be cool to hook up with some of you. I will be able to check e-mail from there.

He did not take back what he said concerning the maturity of some Jammers. And judging by some of the useless flames he received, he was right on that ONE issue (and wrong on other issues). Did he really deserve Killmary's letter? (I did send HazeX a private message saying he was wrong to post private mail). But what about the rest who needlessly flamed him? Are they better than him?

Let's end this war now, and put it in the past. If you want to reply to this message use private e-mail. Let's not clutter anymore of the Jam regarding this topic.
