    I couldn't agree more with this (I was about to post something to that
    effect myself).
    I am getting the ytsejam in separate messages, and they're coming in at a
    ferocious rate: 119 yesterday; 84 today. Most of these are just people
    beating the same argument into the ground.

    But anyway, that's not really the reason for this post...

    I recently picked up a second-hand copy of Rush's live album 'A Show Of
    Hands', and found that to be a very well spent =A37.50. Can anybody recom=
    mend
    any other Rush albums? Please don't say "all of them" as finances restric=
    t
    me to about one new CD every six or so weeks. Which album is, in your
    variable opinions 'the best'.
    As a guide, my favourite DT album is 'Awake' closely followed by IAW.

    I don't how many people will agree with me when I say that I see this list
    as a list for DT fans, not necessarily a list for DT fans to talk about just
    DT and other bands. The grammar topic may not be DTC, but I've found it
    quite informative and interesting, and I'm sure I speak for at least a few
    others too. A certainly don't think that the Jam's "greatly distorted" by
    subjects like this. If it doesn't interest you, don't read it.

    As for the Sony thing, it is relevant isn't it?

    Pitch-axis theory is where you play different modes based around one tonal center. As an example you play something in E Ionian (major) then move to say E Mixolydian (dominant). the root stays the same but you play in two different modes (keys), E major and A major (E Mix).

    Well lets see if I can help you :)

    The principle of the whole thing is that you can put however many harmonic settings you want can be linked by the same tonal center.

    Here is an example. You decide to play in C major for four bars and C minor for the next four. Both keys have the same root, C, and this provides a kind of pivot point that you can shift harmonies. Lets say you want something a bit more technical sounding, so you add C Phrygian and C Dorian to the mix. Well, now you have four different harmonies connected by your pivot point, C.

    Just in case you are not a "theory head" think about it like this. You know those old wagon train wheels? Well the center is your axle (tone center) and the spokes on the wheel represent your scales/modes. In order for the wheel to turn all of the parts have to be connected. That means you can't change your tone center . If you choose A,B,C,D,E,F,G (add # or b if you like) Your tone center must stay that way.

Granted the grammar thing got a *BIT* out of hand, but I'm sure someone learned something about the whole apostrophe thing, as well as be referenced to great books that deal with writing style and grammar. I personally never knew there was an online Strunk and White "elements of style". That helped me out. Again, you're missing my point. I'm not saying that the topics like grammar and Sony aren't interesting or educational, but they don't belong here. That's all I'm trying to say. Okay, I can see how the Sony topic might if you get into that technical stuff that only you musicians (I definitely don't) understand. You're going to find things that don't relate to you that you think shouldn't be on here, but no one is going to talk about DT 100% of the time - to tell youthe truth, it'll get stale really quick - that's why this list is a lot better than others. It has a great thing called DYNAMICS. That, with the whole "family" thing posted before (which made me weep) is what sets this apart ffrom other lists. The easiest thing to do is to simply hit the "D" button if it's something you don't want to read (or the page down button). The more streamlined the 'Jam gets, the more stale it will be, and the fewer "eccentric" tidbits of information will get lost. Again, at no point did I say it should be about DT alone. It should be about music. And I'm also not trying to push what I deem important on to everyone else, I'm just making suggestions.

    Okay. My vote is for the IRRELEVANT TOPICS to continue. I too feel that 20 to 50% of the stuff on the ytsejam is irrelevant. But, it is only irrelevant to me. I'm sure the 50 to 80% that I consider relevent is irrelevant to others.

    My view is that, I am getting opinions from people that share common interests with me - so just about anything is RELEVANT to the list. The only thing that is truly irrelevant are some of the personal wars that go on. I don't mean wars like the BAHR war. That BELONGS on the list, because the list is the CONSUMER BASE for these BAHR CD's - so it is like a CONSUMER REPORTS issue. Just as praise for BAHR is RELEVANT also. It sure helps me decide on what and where to buy items. I have become tangled in a couple of personal wars, so I won't say I'm not guilty. I am trying to keep personal wars limited to private email. So other than some IRRELEVANT personal wars - the list is perfect the way it is.

    Okay this whole post was IRRELEVANT, so send the flames to my personal email. Everything is MY OPINION. So before people send a sarcastic remark "so glad you decide what is RELEVANT on the jam", I never claimed to have any control - just an opinion.

    I picked this up yesterday, the day of its release. Unlike LTE this only took me five music-store-plowings to find...

    To everyone who told me it's like Nuno's "Schizophonic" : What the hell were you thinking? Is it because you expected albums full of of nothing but incredible guitarwork, and neither of these two albums delivered? KOC is a much more singable, feel-good album than Nuno's. I could play KOC while driving across Montana in a convertible with a smile on my face and a bucket of strawberry ice cream in the backseat, something I could never do with "Schizophonic."

    For the wonderers, KOC is a major-key album with upbeat, poppy tunes that could easily find a place on radio-station playlists. And with Paul's unique fashion-sense I'm sure he could come up with some cute little films for MTV to play for two weeks before tossing him aside for Hanson's follow-up album. The solos are appropriate like much of Paul's soloing (they fit the songs), and the rhythm guitars are punctual and, well, rhythmic. Paul plays most of the instruments himself, and also does the vocals, which ain't half bad. I guess when you compare any guitarist trying to sing next to "Flying In A Blue Dream" you come up with Sinatra, but Paul is a surprisingly good vocalist IMHAO.

    "King of Clubs" has allowed me to upgrade my definition of "catchy."

    Catchy - when you hear a thirty-second clip of a song and end up singing the chorus over and over for two months until the actual album is released, at which time you can sing along on the first actual listen because the melodies were THAT INFECTIOUS. A prime example would be "Vinyl," a great tune as happy and hippy as the rest of this album.

    The good news: for anyone who believes the rumors floating around like "there's no shred guitar on King of Clubs," I beg to quash. Track 12 of this disc is called "The Jam" and features Paul Gilbert and Bruce Boulliet (of RACER! X! RACER! X!) shredding each other's asses off. Paul shreds his own ass off, which makes it really hard for him to sit down, then goes over to the drummer and shreds off all his drummer-appendages, including the poor bastard's eyebrows. Bruce runs out of asses to shred after about five minutes, so he rams his guitar through the window of the studio and starts shredding a boy who rides by on a bicycle. It's sick stuff. To my shredder-ears it's a big juicy 40oz. shredder-steak to sink my shredder-teeth into since I haven't heard old-school shred like this stuff in ages. Both guitars are beefed up with chorus effects, and Paul (gasp!) is still the cleaner and crisper of the two players. Which makes it like RACER! X! revisited.

    The bad news: "The Jam" is only twenty minutes long.

    There is also a piece by Bach called "The Jig" with two acoustic guitars (possibly a banjo, possibly a seven-string acoustic, possibly an acoustic- bass, I really don't care). Each instrument is panned to one side. Methinks it would be fun to play live.

    Time to read the last ten digests...
