Agreed. For a real demonstration of Barrie's talents, check out Jethro

I called Caravan of Dreams this morning to find out a little
    more about tickets.

They will allow you to call the box office there and charge the
tickets starting Friday, May 1 at 10 AM.

They won't mail the tickets to you - but they'll keep them
at the window as 'will call' tickets.

Their phone number is: 817 877-3000

Tickets can also be purchased in person.

    Hey y'all--
Pretty cool thing happening Friday night here at the University of
Georgia. We have a crappy on-campus radio station, and somehow a friend
of mine here (fellow metalhead progfreak) managed to get 3 hours of
airtime for himself tomorrow around midnight (if all goes as planned). He
invited me to come along; we're coming up with the playlist now. You
better believe we're going to be playing some rocking stuff!

Hmmm...I like Malmstein, but I really doubt he's the fastest. I'm thinking
maybe Chris Impellitteri. Can we get Ptacek in on this? I'm a damned bass

Maybe I'm belaboring the obvious, but maybe not. "When the Sweet Turns
Sour" is a play on the old Genesis record "Where the Sour Turns to Sweet."
I guess a good chunk of us know about Echolyn, anyhow, but if there's an

This is true. IQ, to me, consistently sounds like Marillion. As Glenn
McDonald (http://www.furia.com/twas/twas0155.html) points out, they've even
evolved in a similar manner. But Marillion, from that period, reminds me
quite a lot of Gabriel-era Genesis.

does anyone liked the band Bad 4 Good? that was the kids band that Vai produced near 1991... Thomas McRocklin used to be the guitar player and he really could play....does anyone knows what happened to him? I heard he was going to release a solo album a couple of years ago but it was going to be available only on UK, does anybody knows if he did that? I know Bad 4 Good broke up and they they formed Lucy's Milk (or something like that) but without thomas....then the vocalist started doing the voice for Max Montana on Tiny Toons or something like that...

if someone knows what happened to thomas let me now (email me privately or whatever...)

Generally speaking, it's not up to the venue, but rather to the band/mgmt/ label. And the official party line is that Dream Theater does not allow taping. So, tape at your own risk. And I wouldn't recommend asking Vinnie if you can patch into the board. -d

I don't think that I can make it to the Daytona's show. I have an exam on the 6th and two on the 7th, so the 5th is really lousy timing as far as seeing a concert goes. Sorry!!

I'm trying to get my ass up the east coast though, since I am probably going to the Irving Plaza show on the 8th with a friend of mine. I know, I'm nuts, I don't go to Daytona's, I travel an extra four hours....

my logic-challenged reason aside, I have as yet no way up. This is turning into somewhat of a problem, as the prospect of another expensive Amtrak ticket grows ever more possible. If anyone can help a poor jammer out in this respect, I would REALLY appreciate it...I could do it in stages, as well...hell, the train to Newark costs less from MD than from southern VA. Can anyone lend a helping ytsehand????

thank you in advance, and happy jamming to everyone going to the Daytona show..

I, unfortunately, won't be able to make any of the impending club shows, because of finals and then the start of gainful summer employment here in VA. I *will* however be in NY for the DT/ELP/DP show at Jones Beach (I already told work I'm taking a long weekend :) on August 9. And once the August 12 Balto-or-DC show is finalized, I'll probably be there too.

I don't know what you're talking about. I think Petrucci's feel seperates him from 90% of all the instrumental guitarists out there. And as for Satriani, i've been listening to instrumental guitar music for at least 10 years and he has been the one i've liked the least. Every few years I try and listen to him again thinking it will be better, but no I think he sounds like he should be playing commercials. Vai's a hell of a player, but I never got into his solo albums much either. The coolest thing Vai ever did was his solo from Crossroads. And as far as Masters go...before people get to hung up on how great people like Vai and Satriani are don't forget there are people like DiMeola, Lucia, Remero, and countless classical players that could play circles around these guys.

Now that i've stepped on everyone's toes...have a nice day. And it sounds like your a guitar player so if it isn't because of Petrucci, how did you end up a big enough dream theater fan to be on this list?

    Later,

    Chris

Just > wondering whether anyone has seen this video (John Myung Progressive Bass > Concepts) and can anyone tell us what it's like and if it's worth getting. > What are your opinions on learning from instructional video tapes?

After having found out that the video was available, I immediately jumped all over the opportunity. If you are into technical knowledge on chord structure and how to learn to use chords and scales to adapt to your bass playing, as well as learning how to strengthen your chops and work with other less-used techniques like harmonic usage in playing and tapping, then this is THE video for you. In other words, if becoming a versatile bass player is your goal, then you want to be all over this video like white on rice. If practicing along with scales and working on improving your knowledge of how they work over a long period of time is something that turns you off, then I would avoid the tape.

Make no mistake : the tape requires a lot of work and patience. The benefits reaped from it are, however, well worth the patience. I've been working along with it for some time now and the difference in my being able to adapt to many music styles with improvisation.

John explains very directly that this is something that will help you in your playing and improve your ability to do so. I appreciate his no-nonsense approach (in fact, he says straight out that practicing scales is boring and tedious but very important) and he gets right down to business. The video isn't the most enthusiastic of videos, but neither is the subject matter. C'mon, you can only get so excited about practicing scales. (: He is not a wild and crazy guy, and I personally would rather watch an instructional flick from someone who gets down to business than someone who is all over the place and not teaching me anything. (: I also very much value the information he provides. It's very informational.

Learning on instructional videos (at least, as far as I feel) is as good way to get repetition in a lot of the basics as well as some other fun stuff. You can practice to the video over and over again or by yourself as necessary. It's a great way to learn the fundamentals of whatever style you wish to play in. It does require self-motivated learning, though. It's tough to do sometimes, but well worth the effort put into it. Practicing for just half an hour every night, going through the scales, getting to know them like the back of your hand, etc. You will be so happy you did it.

    Long windedly yours,

    -= george =-

Yeah, but he asked (not surprisingly) *WHERE* in the songs is it used? I checked as well, out of curiosity, and found the following enlightening info on where in NM the stick is used:

"John Myung plays the Stick on the songs 'New Millenium' and 'Take Away My Pain.'" (DT FAQ v5.04, section 6.31)

That's nice and all, but *WHERE* in the song does John play his stick?

All the parts that sound like a Stick are John playing Stick.

    <anticipating the next question...>

Anything that sounds kinda like a guitar being tapped but not really, and/or kinda sounds like a bass being tapped but not really, is the Stick. Without the CD here in front of me, I can't give you times, but here's an example: in NM, at the beginning, after all the drums and everything stop, and there's just that three-note thing going on, that's Stick.

Cool. I think that this sort of thing should definately go in the FAQ. The reason I was confused on the times (as in completely lost) is because my only other exposure to the Stick was Sean Malone's work in Cynic, and there he played up pretty high. With Derek's keyboards going full blast, there are many times where Igo, "is that it? No... is that?"

    Future FAQ suggestion, I suppose.
