yeah, he uses a 200 ms delay. That's 1/5 of a second, for all you english
majors. It's still fast :) I can only play it at around a 240 ms delay. I
fell down when i first heard that thing. Heheh. EVH also uses the effect
(though much slower, about a 380 ms delay) on Cathedral. Yeah. so like,

To all Joe Stump fans in Holland: The guy is playing three gigs in May. Pretty small places, which is pretty good because that means an intimate gig (I still dream of seeing Joe or Steve play in a 200-people club). Anyway, locations are Bakel (De Fuse, 21 may), Zeist (De Druppel, 22 may) and Leerdam (Jungle, 23 may). Does any of you know where De Druppel is in Zeist, exactly? Because that will be the concert I'm going to. -- /--------------------------------------------------------------\ | Richard Karsmakers & Karin Kessels karies@wxs.nl | \--------------------------------------------------------------/ C.R.I.M.E. Just a few comments on CDs here, CDs that I bought recently and that's I'd like to advise you to get (or not to get).
Damir Simic-Shime - "The Quest"
I read about this guy on the 'Jam, I seem to recall. Someone wrote that we ought to check the guy's home page out (www.earthlink.net/~shime/). I did, and read about the CD, figured it would be worth the US$ 15 asking price, and got it a couple of days ago. It's a brilliant CD with influences of Vai, Satriani and MacAlpine (and the very few first seconds have a disctint Brian May sound in them), but nothing like copying them. There's heavy stuff, light stuff, up-tempo stuff, quite a few different style songs. MacAlpine plays a few guest solo's too. US$ 15 is practically for free (for a European, anyway :-). Get it.
Stratovarius - "Visions of Europe"
A double live CD. Never heard anything by Stratovarius before, but several people on the 'Jam were enthusiastic about him so I figured I'd check them out. Listened to the first few songs in the record shop and I was sufficiently impressed. What you get is a double CD with live stuff from Stratovarius during their Visions tour (I think), in Greece. Jens Johansson is the keyboard player, which surprised me no end. Excellent keyboards and guitars, singing like Helloween, good stuff. If you have no Stratovarius yet, this is a good "best of" thing to get. And the fans, well, they'll already have it, I guess.
Ron Thal - "Hermit"
I read a really enthusiastic review of this one in the 'Jam about a month or so ago. So I bought the CD, blind, through mail order. I was quite disappointed. All the songs have vocals, there is not sufficient emphasis on the guitar. I had figured more music like the "Chopin Fantasy" that I know from the Shrapnel sampler CD "Ominous Guitarists of the Unknown". Alas no. It's kinda grungy, lots of vocals. Thal can play the guitar really well, but all in all he shines too little on this CD. I was disappointed because the review I read had cranked up my expectations too much, for the CD isn't too bad really. It's just not quite what I had thought. Listen before you buy, is my advice. -- /--------------------------------------------------------------\ | Richard Karsmakers & Karin Kessels karies@wxs.nl | \--------------------------------------------------------------/ C.R.I.M.E. Bad 4 Good ROCKED OUT. I think they just came out with the one album before they split...correct me if I'm wrong. That's something that I've wanted to own for a while, but can't find anywhere - like most other things on my CD to get list. They were friggin AMAZING. And they were kids too, which just added to the wow factor. Hot damn, now there's a group that just had a blast at what they do.

At first I didn't care to read the FII reviews, but then I found it quite contagious. So I can't help but jump in on this one. Let's cut to the chase:
1) New Millennium - From the first note I realize that Kevin's departure and Derek's arrival (ACoS didn't count because that was mostly written pre- Sherinian) has had a big impact on my favorite band. I loved it. Very new age sounding beginning - but with a definite DT sound. The whole intro is a turning point for DT enveloping a whole new feel while retaining the DT sound. Perhaps the thing that hit me the hardest was JLB from the very first vocal line. JLB has definitely come a long way. Gone is the heavy reverb that muted his voice in the past. His voice is NOW crystal clear - and sounding like he is singing in first person. I've always had the feeling from the past albums that he carried a third person approach - but this song sounds like he is singing his thoughts - not reading off a paper. Very impressive considering he didn't write the lyrics. 2:51 and an amazingly heavy - yet not droning as sometimes HEAVY can be - kicks in. Probably my favorite part of the song. 3:35 and a very cool blend of Middle Eastern and Industrial begins (how the hell DT mixed those two and made it sound good is beyond me). When the instrumental section starts I am a little surprised. It starts off with Petrucci really extending the feeling of mechanical noises that add to the "vibe", but then it goes to a guitar/key section that although is very cool - lacks the conviction of the rest of the song. It isn't until 7:11 that I feel the much needed change. This section is necessary to take the song to the next level. Very nice change up that leads perfectly back into the vocals. Ah - the infamous "baby" line. Although the melody that envelopes "baby" is great, the lyric is definitely detrimental. For all I know Mike Portnoy could have slaved over changing this lyric but felt it was necessary. The word "baby" in the context is perfectly fine, but we all just hate songs with the word "baby" in them :o) May I suggest "The tide is turning IT WILL SAVE ME." Actually, I should be the last one criticizing lyrics :o) I can't write lyrics to SAVE my life :o) Overall, this song floored me. It was definitely the perfect choice to lead the album off because it shows DT is PROGRESSING. DT is steering more into the realm of texture while retaining their VIRTUOUSITY approach that created their fan base. THEN: A+ NOW: A+
2) You Not Me - Fuck yeah. What a kick ass opening. And the verse is perfect. It reminds me of The Mirror (in a strange way). Instead of a low - one chord heavy metal guitar driving "a quietly building tension", it is the INDUSTRIAL/DANCE low bass groove backed by some very cool toms and the subtle keys providing the chord changes. Then the Pre-chorus kicks in. Oh-oh, the song is losing the cool tension vibe but still maintaining the necessary BUILD UP to explode during the chorus. But then, the chorus arrives It has the RELEASE that the Pre-Chorus and Verse needed, but it is all wrong. This song had a very non-commercial vibe going , so to release into a VERY COMMERCIAL chorus killed the song for me. This is only heightened by me finally hearing the demo and saying to myself "YESSSSSS, That's the chorus I was expecting." What the hell happened? The song had so much potential to be one of my favorites until the CHEESE WHIZ chorus kicked in. Well the guitar solo definitely revived my interest. I love the guitar solo. Could not have possibly been any better (unless John Petrucci wants to prove me wrong May 17th and 18th :o) The song actually was hurt by me hearing You Or Me. My listening of the demo made me want to burn it over You Not Me. I will say the chorus was my ONLY REAL complaint. Everything else had a cool vibe. THEN: B NOW: B- DEMO: A-
3) Peruvian Skies - Very obvious Pink Floyd influence. I love the way DT uses the Pink Floyd influence because I don't particularly like Pink Floyd - but I love this. The same vibe never really changes until the distortion comes in, but it never gets boring. And as far as the distortion raging in, very nice. Very good choice for Derek to sit back and let the guitars take over. Heavy texture would have detracted from the heavy guitar. And when long key chords are held, they add color without stepping on the guitar. I don't quite understand Bahr's feeling that this song doesn't pull you in. I have to listen to this song when I put on this album. It may not be the height of the album, but it definitely isn't as unthrilling as Bahr lets on. THEN: B+ NOW: B+
4) Hollow Years - I think this song is what I would call filler material. It is no Surrounded. I like it better than TSM, but I have never liked TSM. The song by no means sucks. I just usually hit skip when this song comes up. Some nice acoustic passages, but nice passages don't make a song. THEN: C NOW: C-
5) Burning My Soul - I liked Hollow Years much the same way I liked TSM. TSM created a nice serene feel so that when the Mirror begins, it seems that much heavier. HY does the same for BMS. The whole intro and verse were signs that DT are still very much METAL. The problem comes with the Pre-chorus "Twisting, Turning". I felt the "Twisting, Turning" part was already projected through the music, so there should have been NO VOCALS for the Pre- chorus because they are REDUNDANT (albeit simultaneously redundant) to the music underneath. Instead, Derek should have gone ape and taken the forefront with a very HARSH keyboard texture (not line; texture). This would have allowed DT to be METAL and keep the album's feeling of EXPERIMENTAL PROGRESSIVE at the same time. Instead the Pre-Chorus vocals give the song a "heard it before" feeling. The feeling that the musical side creates is "TWISTING, TURNING" but it goes further than what any lyric could have illustrated. ONLY music (harsh keys IMO) could have added to this feel. And the chorus is great, so the instrumental pre-chorus would have only helped the chorus CLIMAX. What can I say about the keyboard solo except phenomenal. Very liquid sounding to bring contrast to the staccato rhythm. AMAZING. I almost wish Portnoy would have had more vocal interplay - perhaps lead in this song. He did a great job on the Mirror. I will admit the song has lost a little of the initial magic, but it still is a great song. THEN: A- NOW: B+
6) Hell's Kitchen - Spectacular transition into Lines in the Sand. I don't know what other people are talking about as far as this being one of their least favorite instrumentals. I can't listen to Lines in the Sand without atleast starting on this track. It sounds more a part of Lines in the Sand to me than it does BMS. It sounds like anything but a simple jam. Majestic :o) would be the word I would use to describe this song. Erotomania is great - but it sounds more like pieces taped together. This instrumental sounds like a song that just keeps building and building while seamlessly flowing. 3:18 is the beginning of the height of the song. This song actually climaxes at the end, as opposed to the middle like most songs. Nothing sounds redundant. Perfect composition. THEN: A+ NOW: A+++

7) Lines in the Sand - Great intro that brings everything to a lower level while not destroying the beautiful lead in from HK. That had to be a very hard task to bring down the band while not sounding like a lull in the music. I only hope to master it to the degree that DT has. This intro (before the pounding guitar) reminds me of the end of Erotomania (which incidentally is my favorite part of Erotomania). Beautiful texture that sets up the big HIT at 1:13. From here the feeling is kept, yet brought up to lead into 1:52 which then just keeps to keep building until the song is established at 2:38. The funky feel is very reminiscent of the feel of the Take the Time verse, while at the same time being TOTALLY DIFFERENT. The chorus may very well be my favorite DT chorus with only the Voices chorus in competition. The chorus almost sounds "theatrical". As far as Doug Pinnick, I've always loved Doug Pinnick's voice and this song is no exception. It was almost too good to be true. Doug Pinnick could NEVER FRONT Dream Theater, but damn he can sure ADD to it. I could listen to this song on repeat for a week straight and still not grow tired of it. Great solo. If you think of all the hills and valleys that go on musically from the beginning of BMS to the end of Lines in the Sand, you can only appreciate the song that much more. To have so many changes while keeping continuity is nothing short of GENIUS. Petrucci's guitar work at 8:32 is breathtaking. Very inspiring. And it once again provides the foundation to build the song AGAIN. THEN: A++ NOW: VOICES (that's my grade for a song that goes beyond any "A")
8) Take Away My Pain - I like the cool muted guitar, but overall I don't like this song. I could barely listen to it all the way through the first time, now I just skip it. I even tried to get into because of the content that it was derived from, but I couldn't'. I don't think the music really matches the lyrics. This of course is just me personally. This song almost gives a feeling of resolution as opposed to what I would feel if my father passed away. I would feel anything but calmly reflective if my father passed away. I would feel violently distraught. I would feel the need to lash out. The last thing I would feel or even want to feel is calm. I would instead have this feeling of restlessness that someone who I loved like almost no other (brothers and mother being the only ones that could tie) was ripped away from me. Even if I got to say everything I could possibly ever wanted to say to my father before he passed away, it would still feel unresolved. If anything, I wouldn't want my pain to leave. Instead I would latch on to it and use it to drive my life. All of the feelings I have discussed were brought about by contemplating the meaning of this song - so it did serve a purpose. And of course it brings to light why I don't care for this song. That is because I would handle my father's death very differently. Perhaps the way I would handle it would be less positive, but that is me. And because it is me, I understand I don't like this song is because I can't relate to it. The song I would write in relation to my father dying would probably sound more like The Mirror. THEN: D NOW: D-
9) Just Let Me Breathe - I love the intro. Excellent drum work. I love the funky (or more fire) feel that Dream Theater seems to have incorporated into their sound on this album. 0:55 is heavy and funky at the same time. Definitely cool. It almost sounds like it had a small hint of Chili Pepper influence (as far as the 0:55 riff goes). When the verse repeats, Derek really shines. Great little distorted key fills. It reminds of what Kevin Moore tried to achieve on the second verse of 6:00, but Derek's fills seem to have more flair and really nail the feel. The instrumental section is very good, but it doesn't really start to fly until 3:42 when Derek and Petrucci really work with each other. And then at 3:56, Derek and Petrucci duel and complement each other at the same time. Amazing. THEN: A- NOW: A
10) Anna Lee - Cheese? Out of Place? What the hell are you guys talking about? I compare this song to Space Dye Vest. Space Dye Vest was so disconnected to the rest of Awake, but I think the fact that it was so disconnected is why I love it so much. This is the only "ballad" song on the album I like. I think Kevin Moore was the "ballad type writer" in DT, and now that Kevin is gone - JLB is the perfect successor. JLB is credited with the lyrics, but how much of the music is from him? I definitely hear the Queen reference to the guitar, but the progression reminds me more of the Beatles. It is removed from the Beatles, but the falling chord progression is very Beatlesque. The vocals aren't Beatles, but I still hear a little bit of Beatles in this song. Beautiful song. THEN: B NOW: B+
11) Trial of Tears - For being such a quiet guy, John Myung sure has quite a bit to say :o) Songs like this and LtL let everyone deep into Myung's inner thoughts. I don't know Myung at all, but he strikes me as a person who chooses his words carefully - which can be mistaken for being shy. His thoughts are probably so deep, it is hard for him to participate in "small" talk because that just isn't his character. If anyone really knows JM, please tell me if I have interpreted correctly. Back to the song. The melody and the music matching the lyric "It's raining" is probably the best on the album. It all comes together perfectly for this line. While the other writers of the band seem to write in terms of "themes", John Myung writes in terms of "themes" supported by a larger story and great imagery. JM's imagery comes from his structure - rather than from individual words. It is hard to pick apart the first section because it all flows so well that one section doesn't take center stage. Instead, all of it is relevant to the overall picture. At around 6:14, Section II - the Instrumental begins. Some of the other reviews have called this the lull in the song. I find it to be a continuation of the "story" without using words. The solo from Petrucci is beautiful. The tradeoff to Derek at 8:10 with a new rhythm and feel is a bit awkward at first - but recaptures ground at 8:57. Section III enters at around 9:53. The wind effect is perfect. There is a very good image of despair supported by both lyric and music here. I'm very bad at interpreting lyrics, but this song seems to be very inspiring and upsetting to me. Not in a happy, accepted way - but rather in a Shakespearean way in that you purge yourself with tragic thought. "I may have wasted all those years, They're not worth their time in Tears" and "I know the streets are cruel, But I'll enjoy the ride today." show a turning point in someone's life that they are looking at their past and swearing the future will be different. He won't spend "too long in darkness, In the warmth of my fears." The instrumental section is that change, but Section III is the upsetting (in a good way if you are taking it personal) part. After that someone tries to make this change - he finds nothing but "wasteland" and "I look for a way back home." If this "home" is the "warmth of my fears", then this is a very sad ending. But like Shakespeare, it takes a tragic ending for something to be truly reflective. Happy endings make people content and motionless. Tragic endings make people want to get off their ass and change. I have always used this theory in my own life. I use negative feelings to help push me towards positive production. Happy feelings just make me lazy :o) THEN: B- NOW: A+
This album has definitely shown DT in a whole new light. Besides HY's, TAMP, and the chorus to YNM, this album is a masterpiece. This reflection has been very helpful for me personally. I always love to analyze because it helps bring a deep appreciation. Thanks Mike Bahr for starting the thread.
In conclusion - Favorite to least favorite song is as follows:
Lines in the Sand Hell's Kitchen New Millenium Trial of Tears Just Let Me Breathe Peruvian Skies Anna Lee Burning My Soul You Not Me Hollow Years Take Away My Pain

Hi jammers,
There are some true shredders around on the shrapnel label today, some = names:
Scott Stine (Haji's Kitchen), Eddie Head (Haji's Kitchen), George = Bellas, Derek Taylor and more, but some of the fastest guys I have ever = seen are definately Michael Angelo, Shawn Lane, Paul Gilbert, Scott = Mishoe (He's incredible) and Greg Howe.
By the way, does anyone here on the Jam know what happened to Josh = Christian (Guitarist for Toxik in late 80's, begin 90,s) ? He also is a = brilliant guitarist and after the Toxik period I never heard anything = from him.
Oh, my solodemo (also a lot of shred included) is still available, I = sold more than 100 so far, so if anyone is interested, view this site:

Hm, August 9th, you say? I feel a sudden need to schedule my beach trips this summer...
>>Damn, that's a shame. :~( We'll miss you guys. Me and Bafu will try to take up the slack for you ;~)

Do that. ;)
I'll be going freaking wild at Irving Plaza. That is, if I figure a way to get around these 400 miles or so...

The words we are looking for is somone we all know, but not by name. David Gilmour of Pink Floyd. It's not really a gituar, it's funny looking arm making a great sound.
Other words to remeber is Mark Knopfler, the plays with his fingers, not with a plecter. How about that.
