Since we were briefly talking about guitar instructional flicks, I was
wondering if anyone actually picked up the JP guitar instructional
flick. Could someone perhaps provide a small review of it, the content,
subject matter, etc? I know it's much cheaper in cost than the John
Myung and Mike Portnoy flicks, so I was curious what it was like.

It's dropped D, I have several videos if Nuno playing this thing and he does it on dropped D...sometimes he used play More Than Words after that song and he had to retune the guitar.

You know, I never thought about how I contradict myself in my own sig. Yes, I do play for money, but when it comes to original music, that is where Rush's quote comes from. I still plan on doing a prog thing sometime in my life. But when it comes to making money, then I am a slut, musically.

The definitive two words: Kirk Hammet.

    BWAHAHA ; )

    Jon

What the fuck is up with dissing Kirk? By all of your reasonings, because he plays tastefully, he sucks. That really doesn't make any sense. "Oh, no! Kirk Hammett doesn't play as fast as John Petrucci! His band isn't prog! What a bunch of assholes!" I don't really get whats so funny about saying a guy who obviously doesn't play as fast as many others sucks. Here's something on a positive note....What does anybody think of Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman from Slayer? I know they are not as technically adept as DT, but ya gotta admit, their songs are pretty fuckin fast (which does not necessarily make them good...)! chris

Whoa, hold up a sec there, Tex! Nobody ever said anything in disrespect towards the song or the content! I personally might have cracked a few jokes about it, but if you haven't figured it out by now, I HAVE A SENSE OF HUMOR, and tend to do those kinda things. I merely stated that I like the demo version of the song a whole lot more, in my own style of writing.

    > JP > wrote this song about dealing with the death of his father. WHO GIVES > A > FUCK if it's a cliched song or it's not heavy or it's not played at 90 > miles per hour? Don't you have any respect? TAMP has more feeling and > emotion than the majority of DT's songs. And as far as the music goes, > I think it's some of Petrucci's best playing ever.

And I agree, Petrucci is just a bad ass on this track. If it's one thing that impresses me it's when somebody can more or less shred and be subtle about it so that it runs through the song w/o the listener being immediately blown away by the guitar. And the solo is just beautiful.

    > I'm not saying you have to love > the song, but have some respect for it. Petrucci was nice enough to > share a topic with the fans that obviously is very disturbing to him, > and saddens him a great deal. So the next time you hear TAMP, think > for > a second about what the song really means. Think about how it would > feel if one of your parents died, and then make your judgments.

In November of '97 I had two close relatives die within a span of two days. I was listening to FII quite a bit too, since it had recently been released right before all this happened. So I tried to listen to TAMP, and although I understand Petrucci's feelings for his father were probably much stronger than my own family ties, I understood the whole message in this song.

It just didn't hit me as hard as the demo version did. I actually listened to Anthrax's Bare off of Stomp 442 quite a bit to clear my mind of everything that was happening within my family. Go figure.

BTW, new Anthrax is finally coming out...AND I CAN'T WAIT!

    a-fuckin-men, brother graham.

BTW, somebody asked awhile back about whether or not the new Stabbing Westward album (Darkest Days) is worth buying. All I can say is, get to Best Buy and get it. Its only $11.99 right now, and its one HELL of an album. Its not as catchy right off the bat than "Whither..." of "Ungod", but I think this one's gonna get alot more plays.

Pendragon and IQ are neo prog from England. Peter Hammill is the lead singer/leader of an old English prog band named Van Der Graaf Generator (VDGG). Right now he is a solo artist. His style is pretty mellow but his singing is so emotive. He is one of the best dinosaur prog singers from the 70's era. Discipline is a new prog band from the east coast. I think someone can explain this better than I do.

No, not really.... I just wanted the attention of the Chicago jammers. := )

Here's the deal. I just tossed up a quick generic wwwboard forum at:

    http://www.prognosis.com/chicago

for the use of anyone planning on attending the Chicago show. This way, = we can try to coordinate rides, parking, food, arrival times, and pre/post show activities in one convenient location, without having to deal with a whole lot of e-mail. =20

Yes, it looks really bland and boring. I'll fix that. :) I urge EVERYO= NE who reads this and is going to be at the Vic on May 13th to go right now, to that url, and bookmark it. Please post, if only for the sake of letti= ng us know you'll be there.

If any Chicago locals want to get together beforehand (days beforehand) a= nd combine efforts to make a Chicago Jammer Banner, that would rock all nad.

Catch ya later... and go POST, dammit!

(p.s. if any other jammers want a wwwboard to do something like this for their area jammers, mail me privately, and I'll set it up, or help you se= t it up on your site. This should be pretty helpful to all area jammers!)

Six words: You have got to be joking.

    >Certainly these guys like Yngwie and Angelo can play FAST, but that's on= ly ONE element >to mastering the guitar. Emotion is another very important aspect, whic= h was the point

Just because these guys can play fast doesn't mean they can't play with emotion. Listen to the opening lines of Angelo's "No Boundaries", now don= 't tell me that isn't emotion.

And the TAMP thing: Am I one of the only people who likes this? I have nothing against clich=E9s in music. I mean, if there was a law saying you can't use *this* certain harmony, or *this* certain melodic idea because something similar has been used before, then musicians would be trapped i= nto the 'now that melody would be excellent here, but I can't use it because that guy's done something similar before' frame of mind, which would be awfully restricting. TAMP is a wonderfully emotional piece, I don't know = why most people don't like it.
