Unfortunately, the entire European tour, including the Netherlands, was
cancelled last week. Joe told me this on Monday. Sorry! He said there was a
possibility of rescheduling it for September.

<<<To all Joe Stump fans in Holland: The guy is playing three gigs in May.
Pretty small places, which is pretty good because that means an intimate
gig (I still dream of seeing Joe or Steve play in a 200-people club).
Anyway, locations are Bakel (De Fuse, 21 may), Zeist (De Druppel, 22
may) and Leerdam (Jungle, 23 may).
Does any of you know where De Druppel is in Zeist, exactly? Because
that will be the concert I'm going to.>>>

Respect for Petrucci and his late father? Sure. Respect for this song?
No way, not I. I don't care if it's "not heavy or it's not played at 90
miles per hour", but I do care about the cliched thing. DT has always
been a band that has been far above normalcy and cliches, IMO. I don't
know where you get off thinking we have to "respect this *song*". Now,
disrespecting JP and the situation leading to this song is a different
matter altogether; but, as far as I've seen, no one's done that. I
respect what he was trying to do in this song, I simply don't like the way
he did it. It doesn't appeal to me in the least, and if I want to say I
    think it's crap, I will.

I guess I really missed the part where anyone on here was disrespecting
    the death of JP's father...
Again, just because we respect what happened doesn't mean we have to
respect the way he wrote about it. I just think it has been done better
many times (aka Hetfield). But, that's just my opinion based on my
personal taste and preference. If TAMP is your style, more power to you.
But don't tell me what I have to like or respect. Thank you.

I suggest checking up on band-history before putting your foot in your
mouth with a ridiculous statement like that one. Ian Anderson bought a
flute at a pawn shop because it was cheap, looked interesting, and would
serve as a mighty fine gimmick for his *blues* band, so as to make them
distinguishable. (This band would later be known as Jethro Tull.) Anyhow,
his reasoning did not include anywhere in there anything about ripping off
the Moody Blues, who weren't even commercially successful yet (their most
popular albums weren't around yet when Tull was a flute-equipped barband).
Not to mention the flute styles of the two bands aren't anywhere close to
    being similar.

C'mon, I'm sure find yourself a better conspiracy theory than that one.
Like how the Eagles ripped off the tune of "Hotel California" from Jethro
Tull's "We Used To Know". Maybe it was subconscious, being that the Eagles
opened for Tull back when they were playing WUTK (the year before HC came
out), but the two songs have a disquieting similarity...

Having been in the front row for an Extreme concert (he preened), I can
say that it was a 6-string acoustic. At the time (III Sides to Every Story
had just been released) the solo was called "Midnight Train", and it
sounded a bit different, but it was played on a 6-string. Very impressive
    live.

          ProgEst '98
The ProgEst festival in Quebec will be held from
    June
25 to July 5. Bands already on the bill are
    Pendragon,
Discipline, IQ, Peter Hammill and Spock's Beard.
    The
organizers are awaiting the word from one more
    band
and the full line-up will be completed by May 10.

Ok.. I've heard of SB.. I will pick up an album from them.. but what about
the other bands? does anyone have any info about it... cuz I'd really like
    to go...

    Greetings ye 'jamanoids...

I wrote the following about Alex Masi's "Attack of the Neon Shark":
    >> just lots of notes jumbled together at high speed. It doesn't even have
    >> the real melodic quality of many neoclassical shred albums

    and then Per remarked:
    > You say Masi is neoclassical? Eh, I don't know about that... maybe one
    > track or another is, but on the whole, the album shows no influences to
    > me, it just stinks. Just think about track 4, "DFWM" - oh me oh my! Just
    > a lot of notes, one guitar alone with a delay, 32nd notes almost all
    > over, and no melodic content whatsoever.

I said that Masi's work doesn't have the real melodic quality of many
neoclassical shred albums. I didn't say he *was* neoclassical -- for that,
you have to have some melody in your shred, and I don't think this album
    does for the most part.

BTW, your complaints with "DWFM" were almost my exact ones. "Where's the
melody?" I was thinking. Yeah, the speed was impressive, but after hearing
it once or twice I stopped finding it interesting.

The album does have one redeeming feature. Masi listed Holdsworth as one
of his big influences, and I think Holdsworth plays a solo or two
    someplace.

    Ta,
    Phil

I can't believe how many people actually prefer You or Me to You Not Me.
I will admit that there are some parts of You or Me that I would have
    kept, such as:

the synth bass intro <really techno...cool>
the interlude <the keys sound TOTALLY KevMo here>

but that's it. the chorus is MUCH stronger in YNM both musically <with
the key change> and lyrically. the lyrics are just better throughout. I
don't think there was anything WRONG with them before, but the song is
MUCH MORE COHERENT as YNM. I am personally glad they:

changed the words and key of the chorus, and put the break in
                    there
shortned the "jam" section <the extended one on the demo is
cool if you're live, but in the studio it tends to
                    drag>
eliminated the silly "I need som pencils..." sample at the
                    beginning

I really like YNM. the first time I heard it I remember my gf called me
and said she just downloaded it, listened to it and cried because it was
so bad. The first time I heard it I just said, "Enh, this sin't so bad.
It's a single." And it gradually grew on me. When I heard YoM, I
IMMEDIATELY knew which I liked better.

    Just some thoughts...

    Hey 'Jammers,

I thought of something extremely humorous here. I think that DT should
make a JLMB video, and if eMpTyV actually played this video (unlike other
DT videos which never get played by them) it would be extremely humorous.
I would love to see some eMpTyV bashing on eMpTyV itself. I just saw the
lamest thing about that "wonderful pop culture" station recently. You
know the Daily Show section on the new VJ, and now eMpTyV has its first VJ
that was a product of their cultural vacuum. Speaking of pop "culture", I
just don't see how so many intelligent people can get sucked into its
vacuum. There is so much out there that has to be explored, what is the
fun of having culture pushed in our face. Now, I don't expect everybody
to worship DT, Rush, etc., but I do expect an understanding of the talent
of the bands and how they defy the status quo. No thanks to all the big
wigs in the music industry, almost no one can think for themselves. What
we need is more independent thought. I think that if everyone would think
for themselves and define their own culture (culture as a way of making
sense of the world around us, which it is supposed to be -- the very
definition implies independent thought, but it is often stifled by an
overwhelming "culture machine"). Just how does this relate to DT might
    you say:

    1. Dream Theater is not part of the huge juggernaut that is our pop
culture machine (although, oddly signed by a major label, but they don't
get much promotion or attention from the company, imo)

    2. If more people got an interest in Dream Theater and other progressive
bands, the world could rid itself of such blights as those five "wannabe"
she-Beatles, those cocaine snorting Beatle rip-offs, that band that should
"Push" itself into a pit, and those she-boy teen idol bands. Figure them
out for yourselves, because it would put a jinx on me if I wrote their
    names here.

    3. Dream Theater is just better than all of these "pop" losers.

Well, that is just some food for thought (hopefully independent thoughts).

Must return to my exciting work.
