Out of lurking to post on note on getting 'tickets' for the Maritime Hall
show in San Francisco, Saturday, May 16 at 8:00 PM. You can get them ONLINE
with a credit card number from www.ticketweb.com <http://www.ticketweb.com>
Check out the listing for Northern California. You'll get your
confirmation number in just a couple of minutes. Make sure to print out a
copy of your confirmation. It cost me a grand total of $19.20. I did the
same for the Palo Alto show last fall, and had no problems getting into the
    show.

    Greetings,
I never thought Satch was a technical God, but Flying in a Blue dream
and Surfing really do things to me emotionally when I hear them. I think
Vai has totally surpassed Satch, but Satch can sure put feeling into what
he does. My teacher said it best when he said he plays with a lot of
    class.
Kirk Hammett got me intersted in playing fast leads. I do loke a lot
of his early work from Ride the Lightning and And Justice, as well as the
black albom, but I think it's true that he's going way down hill. I do
think most well-respected guitarists we've been talking about can outplay
    Kirk in any asspect.
As for improvisational solowing in TOT, listen to the fan club CD. I
think that entire solow was rehearsed. If I'm wrong, I totally will chew
on my foot for a while, but I don't think Petrucci has the tallent to
totally improvise a solow like that. Comments? Wellness.

i didn't know this, this would actually make sense, especially if it were Burton they were handed down from. since his playing style changed completely at the black album, i think he still had the style he was using during Justice though, but maybe he still had some burton left in his playing then..

    > But I really am interested in what you find good, bad, intriguing, > boring, tasteful, wanky, etc about bassists. Discuss. :)

Well, lemme start by saying...I *used* to be a musician. :)

Basically, I think a lot of people brush off musicians for copying the styles of others. You see a lot of peolpe who think Player X originated a style, until someone corrects them and says that Player Y was already doing it when Player X was still in diapers. Stuff like that.

I try not to be like that. My big thing is not hearing things that are "new" to the world of music, but things that are new to *me*.

The bassist in a band (to me) was exactly what D-Man said: The guy who stands off to the side playing quarter-notes. The first guy I heard who blew that mold apart was Steve Harris. Suddenly, I could "see" a whole new role for bass players. Is Steve Harris particularly gifted or innovative? Not neccessarily to the world of music, but he was to me. There's a couple of other players (Stu Hamm, Les Claypool, John Myung) who do something suimilar, and I enjoy them for the same reason. Not for huge solo work, but for doing something "different" within a band framework.

Chris, Sorry to be so blunt, but anybody who's heard their share of rock and metal guitar players over the years has figured out by now that Kirk Hammet is way overrated. At the beginning he was innovating but I think his solos reached their peak on Master. The solos on Load and Reload are pure shit. Anybody who knows anything about metal guitar should be able to transcribe them and they're all just minor pentatonic and variations of the minor scale. In fact, they're great for beginning players to learn. The Four Horseman and Master of Puppets were the first two solos I ever learned. But I've been playing guitar for almost 7 years now and that was probably between 5 and 6 years ago (I started slow but I was only 10 at the time so gimme a break).

The Slayer guys are the same shit except probably even worse. Every solo they've ever played has been the exact same thing. Sorry, but again, maybe after you study guitar playing for a bit longer you'll realize why I don't consider the guitar players in Slayer and Metallica to be at the top of my list. Also, I'm not speaking from any special technical standpoint. Sure, JP is technically better than these players, but he also plays with much more taste.

Sorry if I seem so pissy about metal players in general but I'm really getting tired of all these guitar players that play the same shit over and over again. People say guys like Michael Romeo or whoever are the next generation of prog-metallers, but all I hear in his solos are a bunch of licks strung together. The songs that Symphony X write kick way more ass than Romeo's wanking. The singer is the real star of that band, I don't care how fast Romeo plays. Technically it kicks ass but I don't get much out of it. I guess after so much listening over the years I may have almost exhausted my taste for this genre of playing. Oh well...I must be getting old :)

Now....back to listening to some Sonny Rollins jamming on his tune St. Thomas. Now that's a tune that you'll find yourself whistling for the next WEEK after you listen to it.

One of my favorites, for the same reasons stated here, is Peter 'Mars' Cowling, who used to play with Pat Travers. He definitely introduced me to how much more a bass player could be, within the band framework. Anyone else?

That IS Nuno playing that solo called "Flight of the Wounded Bumble Bee", which THEN segues to "He-Man Woman Hater". You would see that if you would take your own advice and read the liner notes- besides, why would a band put a guitar solo piece on their album that was played from a different guitarist?! Duh. The solo you're referring to is the improv jam/solo that is being played during the intro of "He-Man Woman Hater", after the whole band kicks in, and again for the outro solo at the end of the song, both of those were played by Dweezil. Do your homework my friend. Other Nuno highlights are the string skipping shredfest during "It's A Monster", and the string skipping-tapped arpeggios during the MIDDLE solo of "He-Man Woman Hater". (Which IS ALSO played by Nuno.) O.K., I'm done venting now. As you were. Justin

Well, I know that the pre-SitA solos weren't exactly melodic, but they were interesting, in many cases. And they replicate all of those solos fairly closely live.

On a much more important note, I've received three emails from idiots in the last few weeks wanting to buy bootlegs from me. They specifically mentioned that they wanted to buy them, not trade for them. Has anyone else been contacted by total strangers asking you do something similar to this? I mention this because of the recent stink involving the Springsteen fan that's in trouble, even though he supposedly didn't sell his stuff.

Any feedback, private or to the 'jam, will be much appreciated.

What Dweezil plays is indeed the improv solo that starts when the band kicks in I always liked that era of Extreme and Dweezil where both of them contributed with each other, Dweezil recorded Confessions and it was produced by Nuno, Extreme did some killer background vocals there, Nuno sang lead vocals on "The Kiss" which is great, he played cello on "FWAK" and even played a guitar solo on "sataying alive" that song has zakk wylde, steve lukater and the guy from toto doing solos there too....Ozzy was supposed to sing this one but his label didnt let him release that version (I have it by the way and it's hilarious to hear Ozzy saying "Im the Disco Man")

Confessions is a killer album and Im still waiting for another Dweezil album like that one, it was like a dream team in music, Dweezil, Keneally, Nuno and the guys from Extreme, Scott Thunes, Josh Fresee (it is true that he is the new Guns and Roses drummer?) and many guest stars....

Shampoohorn was ok too but music for pets just didt make it in my good reviews book (the extra album called "bone-us CD" was great though")

Other memorable Dweezil appeareances are: with Winger on Purple Haze, with Spinal Tap on Diva Fever, with Vai and keneally on Dirty Love, and now he's touring with Lisa Loeb (that's what Im talking about)....

someone asked Dweezil on one interview why didnt he work with Nuno again and he responded that he didnt see him for a long time, that the reason could be that Nuno married his Exgirlfriend....

is sad that Dweezil is better known as a celeb than as a musician...

Nuno on the other hand has made some great music...when I first heard of his solo album I read that he was playing all instruments and I though "allright!!!" then he said that it wasnt another Extreme album, that it was going to be "different" that he was going to have rock songs, funk songs, rap songs and even polka (I have never discovered if this was just a joke) but I was even more happy I though he will be using different instruments (apart from guitar and piano) as he did on Dweezil's Confessions (with the cello) and I though it was going to be a pretty weird album but after 2 or 3 years of waiting I discovered that he did an alternative album, I bought it anyway and I really like it....even when I expected something different...

I think Nuno is very good writing catchy melodies and choruses, and I think he needs to write better lyrics (now I understand that Nuno wrote the music for extreme and Gary did most of the lyrics...I thought Nuno did everything there...just kidding)...I havent heard the new Van Halen album but I guess it has a deeper content in lyrics that Schizophonic had...

anyway, my point is that I really would like to see Dweezil and Nuno working togheter again....and that I really like Schizophonic and I loved Extreme. thats all --- Alan Estrada Adler http://www.geocities.com/CollegePark/2025 "You've got your whole life to write your first album, and six months to do your next."
