Hey guys I am taking a vacation to Albany New York with a friend. I
was wondering if there's any cool Prog Stores that sell any DT stuff.
Or any cool music stores in general. Also are there any shows going
on? I'll be there from Aug 6, to Aug 11.

email me so we don't waist space on the Jam.

Yes, I'm late to the Conception party, and they've apparently packed up all
their shit and left prior to my arrival (i.e. broke up). I got 'Flow'
along with AoI from CDNow (both for $20.96!!!!!!).

Anyway, I know it's been said here before time and again, but this is a
really great album if you're looking for a) almost unbelievable production
    - seriously, does it get any better than this? and b) fairly straight-ahead
stuff with a slightly 'techno' feel. But it's still metal, no question. I
love stuff that's really synth-heavy, but for the effects and textures, not
necessarily for the traditional 'keyboard' playing. They add a real
thickness to the sound that gives it a very tactile feel - lots of
separation. I talked with Matt Guillory about this once, and he seems to
    really excel at both.

Oh yeah, I second every good thing that's been said about Ray Kahn as well.
He reminds me a lot of Geoff Tate, with the exception that Kahn is never
tempted to wander outside his range.

Don't know about their earlier stuff though - the thought around here seems
to be that it's not really like 'Flow' - much more in the neo-classical
    vein.

    ...on this whole derek/kevin thing.

Kevin is, or was, a progressive keyboardist. his styles were
reminicant (sp) of the Emersons, the Wankmans (heehee!), etc. Even moreso
now, Chroma Key shows how progressive, in the true definition of
    progressive, Kevin is.

Derek is a rock keyboardist. He has, for all intents and
purposes, 1 keyboard solo on FII (BMS), and 1 almost solo (PS). His
pop-influence certainly has had an effect on the band, both in the studio
and live as well. Not that this is necessarily bad thing, but it comes
    with the territory.

Personally, I'm not as much anti-derek as I am pro-kevin. they
both have *very* different styles. The fact that Derek can (almost) play
everything Kevin wrote gives us some idea on the lenghts Derek went to -
to be faithfull to the originals (Ytsejam notwithstanding) - but at the
same time, the keyboard leads that are so obvious on Awake (6:00, for
example) and I&W (Take The Time) are lacking on FII. I'd like to see
Derek, if this is even possible, take a real upfront stance on the next
album. More keybord orientated tunes rather than pop, piano tunes (Anna
Lee). It'll be interesting to see if Derek can pull a song like "Only A
Matter Of Time" or a "Lie" out of his hat.

Hi there. Well, just wanted to let you know that I discovered a new store here in Sao Paulo that is specialized in progressive rock, new age, blues and some guitar stuff. The owner is Helton and, besides being very cool, he knows a lot about the stuff he sells, mostly because he is a fan of prog music in general. The place's got some rare stuff (like PFM, Grandbell, Quaterna Requiem) and some popular releases too (Yes, Jethro Tull, King Crimson, Gentle Giant, Dream Theater, ELP, Bozio/Levin/Stevens etc). And he's got even some heavy metal stuff too. BTW, he has some bootlegs there (I remember that I saw a 2CD set of one of Yngwie Malmsteen's shows). The address is: R. Augusta, 1273 -- Box 35. It's very close to the Consolacao subway station. I have nothing with this place besides being a very satisfied customer.

Oh, his e-mail is: <hbmusic@sti.com.br>. I don't know if he accepts orders by e-mail, but hey, just try and see. Just thought you might like to know of a place that sells some hard-to-find music.

I unsubscribed from the ytsejam for about a week and a half in the middle of July, so if this information was posted during that time, I apologize for repeating old news. Otherwise, I don't believe that the following information has been posted here.

I was looking around at some of the on-line music stores today, and I noticed that Music Boulevard and CDnow each have the German version of the Hollow Years single listed with a new release date. I checked out the description and track listing, and here's what I found:

    Description:

INCLUDES LIVE TRACKS FROM THE 1997 USA TOUR. TRACKS: HOLLOW YEARS (RADIO EDIT),HOLLOW YEARS (ORIGINAL VERSION), YOU OR ME (DEMO VERSION), WAY IT USED TO BE, BURNING MY SOUL (LIVE), & ANOTHER HAND/KILLING HAND (LIVE).

    Track Listing:

    1. Hollow Years (Radio Edit) 2. Hollow Years (Lp Version) 3. You Or Me (You Not Me-Demo version) 4. The Way It Used To Be (Non-album bonus track) 5. Another Hand/The Killing Hand

What is the price, you ask? Only $10.99 at both stores!

Thus, if the description listed above is correct, there is now a German version of the Hollow Years single which is essentially identical to the Japanese version. And of course the best part is that it's 7 to 10 bucks cheaper than the Japanese version!

The only thing that concerns me a bit is that Burning My Soul isn't listed in the track listing, although it is listed in the description. Therefore, it is not clear whether or not BMS is actually on this CD.

Has anyone here ordered this CD? Can anyone confirm the track listing? If it is indeed identical to the Japanese version, then I highly recommend picking up this CD. It's a steal for only $10.99. I paid about $18 for the Japanese version, and I feel that I got my money's worth. The live version of The Killing Hand is extremely cool (quite a bit different from the studio version), and the live BMS is the full original version, with Hell's Kitchen in the middle.

Jordan said that to me as well about the k2500, but I just think the k2500 sounds flat. jordan makes it sound good, but in order to do that, you need to dive into the guts of the machine. This is something I am not good at yet and I am intimidated by the k2500. Its presets suck. Organs blow, and guitars are limp. I love my ex5 and when i can afford to, I will ad the Trinity rack to my plate.

OK, about the derek using guitar sounds for solos thing, so what? I am a keyboard player and I will use guitar sounds and if the rest of you don't like it then fuck off. I think somebody may be getting pissed off that a keyboard doesn't always sound like a keyboard. Look, guys, the sound on the keyboard is similar to a guitar, and if you train yourself, you can distinguish between the two, although when i heard the xmas 2 cd, I was surprised at how much derek uses that guitar sound. It does border on overuse. But for a solo, that shouldn't be anissue. that is like yelling at somebody for using a flute sound. Give me a break. If JP didn't like it, then I would be very disappointed. That borders on insecurity. I think it adds a dual guitars thing that was missing before. Hell, it makes songs sound more ballsy.y

I totally disagree with Syrinx. I think Derek is capable of this kind of playing. just because he came from an Alice Cooper backing keyboardist background, doesn't mean he can't whip out totally out of control shit. Firstly, there is the intro to New Millennium which is very counterpointed and difficult to play, not the bass part, but the beginning. Then, we got the solo in BMS, the solos in TOT, and JLmB. Then we got lines in the sand. Then wegot the concerts, the fact that this guy comes up with some crazy shit live, even in replacing Kevin's solos. Regardless, he is in a prog band now, and yes, maybe they got a little poppier, but we'll see what happens with Metropolis II. And let's not forget the solo in A Change of Seasons. That is prog from hell. I have yet to hear Kevmo's solo stuff, but I don't think it is proggy, and I doubt there are any solos in it, based on what I have already heard of his stuff.

Everyone should check out The John Petrucci Page at http://www.users.skynet.be/JohnPetrucci/index.html and go to the Sounds section. The tune is incredible. "Take Away My Pain" (both versions) is cold, but "Lost Without You" is the solo for anguish.
