Attention Deficit is another one of magna cartas 'super-group' thingys with Skolnik, Mike Manring, and Tim 'Herb' Alexander. This is a *very* jam oriented cd. It pretty much sounds like they jammed for hours, and then took out the parts they liked the best. About half of the songs are like that. The other half are somewhat composed, in that they play a theme, jam, and then repeat the theme. This CD has the best playing I've heard from Skolnik in years (although I'm not crazy about his sound). He's melded his metal and fusion backgrounds into a very unique sound. Of course, Mike and Herb play superbly as well.

Hampton Beach last night...it rocked...and Derek played Tarkus during his keyboard solo. Aw yeah, aw yeah.

Ern's gonna go listen to some ELP now.

Hey guys, Although it is not exactly as cut and dry as this, I must say Brian Hansen gives one of the better descriptions I've seen about the neverending KM vs DS debate. Mike Portnoy

For those of you that missed it: <<<OK, with all of this talk about Derek vs. Kevin and LitS vs PMU, I thought I'd throw in a different twist on this.

Now that the Chroma Key disc has been released, I have been comparing it to FII. My conclusion: The "Baby" that was Dream Theater (I&W, Awake) has been split right down the middle.

The Dream - This is Kevin Moore. Chroma Key is filled with mood, imagery and feeling. The abstract lyrics only help to create the mood. Aside from some nice piano playing, there is no "wankery" here.

The Theater - This is the other half. The pyrotechnics, chops, and insane playing are all here. The long songs, time changes, solos, and general prog mayhem that have always been a trademark of Dream Theater still remain.

This may describe some of the different opinions out there about Derek vs Kevin, and FII vs earlier DT. Fans who loved DT because of the chops will like the addition of Derek. He's a chops/jam kinda player.

Those that were drawn to DT by "mood" songs like WFS, Space-Dye Vest, LSoaD, LTL, and Surrounded may miss Kevin.

I think you are nmissing a very important point. If JP hated the idea of Derek using the guitar sounds in the Trinity or the Z1 ro whatever keyboard he pulls them from, he would stop that. But he doesn't. This means the band likes some aspect of that. Now we don't have to blindly follow the band, but I happen to like it. How many keyboard players do that. In 6:00 and Scarred, kevin uses a distorted sound that could pass for a guitar and nobody complained. Again, they knew what Derek was all about, and if they didn't want that, they could've passed on him and went with me. :) But they took Derek, and I am poor. :) tehn againk, I am not as good as Derek or Kevin, (although i am good). :) But that's neither here or there.

Rob, it will take longer than a month for Neil to be anywhere near normal again. It takes two years to get over a loss like a child or spouse. Neil has barely come to grips with his daughter's death, (speculation here), and nowhas to deal with the loss of his wife, the feelings of being totally alone, and his own mortality. Neil will be KO-ed for a while.

I have been in tons of bands where the guitarist gets so offended when I whip out the distorted guitar patch. Why? I have attributed this to insecurity. Just like the drummer who gets pissed when he can't understand a concept and I pull out the drums patches to show him what I mean. Or the bass player who gets bent when I whip out a bass sound, even a synth bass. People gotta get over it. And it goes farther. How about the guys who get offended when I go beyond piano, organ or electric piano. Or even better, the guys who write my parts for me, down to what sound i should use. JP isn't like ths, and if we care so much about what sounds Derek uses, we should get him to play in our band so we can control him. That's like telling JP not to use t 7 string, or not to use so much distortion, or tellig MIke to only use five drums.

For you Belgian and maybe Dutch, French and German, there is a prog store in Leuven, Belgium, located in the Tiensestraat, but I don't remember the exact adress. Anyway, they're called Pumpkin records, there only open in the afternoon and in the evening and they have or can get to everything, at quite low prices (max= 580 Bf = 29 NLG= 97 FF = 15$).

Let me start out by stating that Brian Hansen had an interesting post - I just don't fully agree with parts of it.

from the mind of Brian Hansen: > This may describe some of the different opinions out there about Derek > vs Kevin, and FII vs earlier DT. Fans who loved DT because of the > chops will like the addition of Derek. He's a chops/jam kinda player.

Sure, Derek isn't a slouch when it comes to chops and jamming - but don't dismiss him as a shred only guy. The main thing I believe Derek added (or amplified) to Dream Theater is groove. FII by far has the most BAND TYPE feel of any DT album. This groove added a whole new dimension to DT. Lines in the Sand has the most "grooving" feel of ANY DT song I have yet to hear. AND I LOVE THIS GROOVE. The cool grind and headbanging is still there - it is just mixed with some groove to give it a bit more soul. And it isn't like the groove necessitates a 4/4 feel - the main riff to LitS is in 6/4. If you need further proof that Derek is responsible for this groove feel finding its way into DT - listen to Platypus.

    > Those that were drawn to DT by "mood" songs like WFS, Space-Dye Vest, > LSoaD, LTL, and Surrounded may miss Kevin. LSoaD and LTL - well those are mainly Myung compositions. But I do agree that Kevin has a very cool brooding sort of feel. But hey - now I have Chroma Key AND DT to listen to - so I haven't really lost a thing. What is missing is the very cool intervallic soloing of Kevin. But then again - even Kevin doesn't do that anymore now does he. BTW - I love Kevin Moore's playing.

Dan, I don't recall any "goat logo" on any earlier Testament albums... They've always had that kickass name logo though, unless they've ditched it... The Legacy, had some type of demonic type face on it(someone stole it), but not a goat. The New Order had that the earth with a skull above it or something(too lazy to look) Practice what you preach was a stone(or dirt?) figure standing with arms spread, Souls of Black had the druid looking fellows with the one in the center holding the heart, and The Ritual was just there name in a cool ass design on the front. I can't remember the cover for Low, I threw that album away(it sucked), and Return to the Apocolyptic city had a screaming head on the front(I'm tired of elaborating)... So, where's the "goat logo" on all the Testament albums?! Nowhere... Unless I'm completely wrong, and I'm not... If I am, then prove me wrong :)

Hi all, Beavis (Wes Foll) here, just letting you all know that I have finally made the move down here to California. I live in Loma Linda and I'll be continuing my geology degree here at the university. I had fun on my summer field research in Wyoming that I had told some of you about, but damn, I'm glad that's over and now I can finally get back on the computer and talk to my ytse-friends! I want to make some new ones here in Southern Cali so email me!! A big WADDUP to some online friends I haven't spoken with in awhile: Paul Cashman, Mark (Bigswifty), Syrinx, Chris Ptacek, and all the people from the irc channels that I talk to! I have (for now) the same email address as before, but soon I should have a new one to use. If anyone knows of any cool concerts in the SoCal area, let me know! Also, are there any weekly newspapers I can get that list all the concerts in this area? I live just 1/2 mile south of San Bernardino. Paul Cashman: if you read this, I still can't send you mail from this GSU address, 'cause your net company thinks I am a spammer. So, how the hell are ya doin!? Say hey to Tim for me man, soon I might get to call you guys and see what's up. My summer USA tour is FINALLY over!!!!!! HURRRAYY!!
