Deedlit, you know I respect you, but judging from your post, you've obviously NEVER heard Symphony X. Symphony X is MUCH heavier than Dream Theater. This is not a power metal band. As far as just plain "heavieness" is concerned, Symphony X, IMO, is on par with bands like Slayer, Deliverance, Pantera, and Tourniquet. Just because they're neoclassical doesn't mean they're "cheese" or "light". Thank you.

hahahah!! Russell Allen is a baritone :) He sounds more like Dio or Zak Stevens (Savatage). Once again, you've never heard Symphony X.

    > I think it's because I play a classical instrument (oboe) but playing >classical music on electric instruments makes me want to burn things...it >totally irks me. Am I the only person who feels like this??!

So classical should be old, played with old instruments? Why not play classical music with electric or even synthesised instruments? Is it no longer good? Is it no longer technically challenging? I don't agree with you here, but everyone is entitled to their own tastes.

Erica, don't take offense, but please listen to more of something before bashing it, thank you.

In Jam 4135 (yesterday or 7 jams ago), Joe DeAngelo wrote, referring to Testament's "Low":

    >Hey, does anybody know if Dave McKean is the artist who did the (very >cool) cover for this CD?

Indeed he is. McKean also did the cover for "Demonic" (somehow I doubt he's responsible for the stamped-on devil-goat thing), as well as tons of CD covers for tons of other bands from all kinds of genres (mostly metal and industrial, though). He most recently did the covers for the new albums by Stabbing Westward and Fear Factory.

Many of you probably own CDs with covers by McKean. He's probably most famous for doing all the covers for the late great comic "The Sandman," and he recently illustrated Stephen King's "Wizard and Glass." He's one of the coolest artists around right now, and he's got sizable followings among gothic types and graphic-design wonks.

Furthermore, since I happen to run what's basically the most comprehensive Dave McKean website on the net, you should all go take a look, it's right up your collective alleys:

    http://watt.seas.virginia.edu/~sdh9b/mckean/

McKean would be the PERFECT choice for designing Dream Theater's album covers. Hint hint to the powers that be.

And also about that email bug thing, I heard somewhere that the bug was something about how the programmers didn't include a size limit on the names of attached files, so the actual *name* of an attached file could be an executable file in and of itself, millions of characters long. Weird shit.

Also if you haven't bought the album "Sennsucht" by Rammstein, you're missing out on one of the best metal albums of the year. Great production, kickass beats. Reminiscent of Broken-era Nine Inch Nails, or Prong's newer stuff. I.e., that burgeoning genre known as Dance Metal.

Plus there is no better language for metal vocals than German.

I didn't mean to say that the bands I mentioned in my previous post were not technically talented...they are...I will not dispute that. My OPINION is, of the neoclassical prog genre, that I don't like it, but I know you all are writhing flames at the moment I write this, soooo...keep in mind that I only express my opinions, like I said, about classical vs. neoclassical.

I don't want do compare songs or players, because I think it's nuts, the basis for discussion being only subjectivity.(I think both can play almost anything the other does) One thing that hasn't been mentioned I think is that KevMo is the more relaxed, cool guy. On LiT he is fucking cool an d funny. I imagine that's the part the other guys miss most. But on the music I'd like to appreciate anything they have done and will do (which does not imply that I'll love it right away, because they did it) and enjoy how they rock. I hope they get back from infinity...

    To Bassicrob

    Hiya fellow bassaholic,

I've checked out a recent bass&guitar buyers guide. The Carvin LB-75 you are talking about is listed for only 699 bucks, I think it is not a good thing to buy a 5-string for less than 1000$. Because for the B-string to sound as good as the rest of the strings, the bass should be made out of fairly good wood and should be constructed with a little attention for the extra string. I don't know much about American-made basses, but I myself own a Bass Collection 5-string fretless. It's a Japanese bass, wich would list for about 1000 to 1200$ in the US, I think. (If It's available overthere) This bass sounds like it costs about 500 to 1000$ more, it even looks expensive, and it playes very nice. It has a wide neck, wich I prefer on a 5 or 6- string.I'm only guessing this, but doesn't the Carvin have a narrow string spacing?

Well, good luck finding a bass, See ya and play 'em low,

Hello everyone, it's BABS. After posting the other day from my long absence from the 'jam I got itching for more. This may have been previously discussed a long time ago, but here goes. I was listening to a classic station the other day and they were playing some Supertramp - I think it was called "Coming Along or School", I really have no idea if that's the title or not? It's the tune that starts off with "I can see you in the morning when you go to school..." Anyways, while listening to it I was reminded of Marillion - the early days with Fish. So I was wondering if there was ever any relation between the bands. Like either Supertramp being influenced by Marillion or vice versa. I'm not good with the history - seems to me that Supertramp was around long before Marillion. Does anybody out there have any feedback to give - or is it just a fluke?

    Thanks, BABS

    Erica uncharacteristically ranted:

Now I'm not saying that you can't like S-X and all those bands, but to me they a) all sound the same (neoclassical wankery) with even SINGERS who sound the same (everyone really likes to imitate Geddy Lee, huh), and b) don't necessarily shred, but just play fast riffs (tho Angra's guitarist is pretty good). I think it's because I play a classical instrument (oboe) but playing classical music on electric instruments makes me want to burn things...it totally irks me. Am I the only person who feels like this??!

Ooooh. Well, I must love guitar wankery lots. And unless the singer sounds like Dio or Labrie, I don't even care about vocals much. I got all the Tony Macalpine and Vinnie Moore albums, I'm acquiring the George Bellas and Joe Stump stuff gradually, and I can tell the difference between them.

I get what you're saying about PURE classical music. When Vinnie Moore plays 'Air on a G string' on electric guitar, you just think...no, not good. Ditto Ritchie Blackmore on Rainbow's Difficult to Cure with Beethoven's Ninth. But neoclassical shred as a whole...gimme gimme gimme.

I don't study oboe like Erica, but I did a few years of cello, and I often preferred the studies I had to learn to the full-blown pieces. I liked the chord progressions, counterpoint, harmonics and such. The first music I got into was DP/Rainbow (Ritchie Blackmore was considered to be classically inspired, though it's a stretch). So when Yngwie hit the scene, followed by all the rest, I'd found my musical home.

MORE WANKING!! You know it makes sense. It's making it with someone you'll respect in the morning.

It's funny...I always interperated this line as JP turning on the TV, which has taken the place of a religion. Tells you what to think, who to respect, who to loathe, and almost every other controlling factor. As to "These demons in my head...", I suspected that was in reference to the more dramatic televangelists you see on TV.

It always seems like JP has strong views on Christianity, but hates the Church. "Love, just don't stare...reveal the word when you're supposed to..." This seems like he's being told "Love your God, but don't think about it very deeply. You're not supposed to. Questions deny faith. If you needed answers, Hell, God'll give 'em to you when He wants to."

Anyone else see this in JP's lyrics? Or am I just seeing things?

And there weren't even any references to DT members being diseases. Sigh....

    Hi all

yesterday saw my weekly visit to my CD dealer to listen to some new stuff and put back a couple of cold beers. Morby (for such is his name) indicated that I should put the headphones on for a 'blind test', i.e. I didn't know what he would put in the CD player. I didn't have a clue who I was listening to and I simply couldn't work it out - it was one of the least inspiring and dull albums I'd heard for a long time. When he gave me the case (after about 15 minutes) you could have knocked me down with a feather - Chroma Key. To call this album disappointing would be flattering, so be warned if you are thinking of buying this. This is one to buy if you simply must have everything that is connected with Dream Theater and Fates Warning in your collection, otherwise go spend your hard-earned cash (or whatever the student equivalent may be) on something else.

As a new member to the list, I've found it extremely entertaining (despite the argument about DS/KM. Face it, no one will win that argument. In response to Deedlit's annoyance with "classical" on electric instruments, do Jethro Tull and/or Tempest annoy you? About "shred" bands, I would recommend Strapping Young Lad, another Devin Townsend band that is *very* heavy and not for the faint of heart. Their best work is "City" however the live album is decent as well. One last comment about DS: I don't know what you mean by "jazzy" as he is most definitely not from the Chick Corea/Keith Jarrett/Bill Evans/Gil Evans jazz keyboard corps. I don't know what kind of jazz you listen to, but DS ain't it. Take care all, from a real musician.
