    Agreed 100% I play bass normally, and it's a pain to compose anything
    delicate on a bass because of the octave difference. Once I took up piano
    (I suck royally, but I know where middle C is) and guitar (I'm muche
    better at this than piaon, but still...), my compositions took a turn for
    the better in a very major way.

    Seriously, I don't see what the difference is myself; it's all a matter
    of context. Since prog is generally defined as music with esoteric
    lyrics and lots of time changes, would a keyboardist that plays in odd
    times automatically be considered prog? I think that notion is ridiculous
    myself. Labelling bands/music for the sake of description is OK since you
    may not have any other way of describing the music to someone that hasn't
    heard it, but splitting hairs over what defines a musician as prog or rock
    is kinda pointless if you ask me.

    And to address the whole Derek/Kevin debate...in the infamous words
    of Hank Hill, "SHUT THE HELL UP!". He's here, the band likes him, end of
    story. If you think he sucks, get up there and do a better job yourself.

            I think (but I'm not sure) that Bruford joins for their second
    album, that is, he is not in "In the Court of the Crimson King". I know
    that he is on "Red" (really fucking heavy music -- approach this with
    caution if you're being introduced to progressive rock by softer bands). I
    don't know if he's on "Discipline".

            I think that "In the Court of the Crimson King", "Red" and
    "Discipline" are worth getting. I must point out that I don't know newer
    KC, unfortunately.

    Actually, the best key players can be found in the prog section of rock. You know - Emerson, Wakeman, Rudess...

    I couldn't care less if Derek's a rock keyboardist, a prog keyboardist, or semi-hard punk with bits of techno. He is a good player, and that's all I care about. He plays good, he plays the Hammond (a thingy most nowadays keyboard players seldom use) which I very like.

    NO NO NO... you've gots it all wrong...

    Pertrucci and Portnoy... both evil sorcerors obsessed with world domination were nearly finished with their weather control device when Moore snatched away the final component and moved to the desert to live amongst the underground dwellers or Arizona. Unbeknownst to the "Twins", Myung who is a double agent sorceror of sorts and is actually a shimmering essence of magic encased within a huge head of black hair hanging from the back of some poor Korean guy cast a protective spell on a Piano before he split with the final component. He then gave this piano to Kevin....

    Kevin has to play the piano to reinforce the protective spell that keeps Portnoy and Petrucci from locating him with their third eyes. This is the reason he released DAFR and risked being found out by the evil twins.

    He is not only being aided by Myung the Magical Hair...!

    KORG (Krimefighting ORGanization) is really a top secret organization that is fighting the world domination schemes of John and Mike also. When Moore left the band Myung contacted the KORG factory and they built a completely cybernetic being from parts of various old keyboards and the mainboard of an enhanced Trinity. In the dead of night they kidnapped some of rock's greatest showmen and renowned; Gene Simmons, Elton John, the frozen brain of Liberace, Ted Nugent and Several really horney men they picked up at a strip club. They then downloaded these personalities in the the DEREK unit and sent it to audition for the opening left by Moore's escape. So through the eyes of this being is transmitted directly to the KORG headquarters everything that the evil twins do or plan to do. They in turn warn Kevin so he can continue to evade the twins.

    Now the reason that you seem to hear Petrucci and Portnoy popping up on all sorts of recorded projects is because they also had their instruments inchanted with a magical spell. Each time the sound of their instruments is played the protective magic of the mystical Piano is further drained. Hence each time that you play Age of Impact, Liquid Tension Experiment or FII you are weaking the forces of good and working to bring about armageddon!!!

    ..or maybe I just watched way too many bad cartoons and read way too many bad fantasy novels when I was younger...

    Um, I happen to think that classical stuff played on electric instruments rules. Witness, if you will:

    -- Gary Hoey's smoking rewrite of Bach's "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" as "Desire" on his album "Bug Alley"; -- Glass Hammer's "Felix the Cat", an adaptation of Felix Mendelssohn's 4th Symphony, 4th movement, on their disc "Perelandra"; -- Savatage's "Prelude to Madness", which adapts one of Grieg's Peer Gynt Suites ("In the Hall of the Mountain King"), from their disc of the same name; -- Savatage's "Christmas Eve (Sarajevo 12/24)", which adapts "Carol of the Bells", an old Christmas tune, from their disc "Dead Winter Dead"; or the Mozart themes played in "Mozart and Madness" on the same disc; -- Vitalij Kuprij and Greg Howe tearing up "Opus 1" (theme by Paganini) on Kuprij's solo disc "High Definition"; -- practically anything by Vanessa-Mae or Linda Brava (electric violins played by goddesses. Interesting stuff to say the least) -- the bits of Vivaldi that Angra throws in during "Evil Warning" off of their disc "Angels Cry"; -- the albums "Ho-Ho-Hoey", "Ho-Ho-Hoey II", and "Merry Axemas", all of which adapt "classical" Christmas tunes to electric guitar pieces.

    I know that ELP was very big on doing this sort of thing as well, but I'm an ELP neophyte so I can't give specifics.

    These are just a few examples; there's lots more that I can't remember offhand. These are all well-arranged and well-executed interpretations of the music, IMHO. They don't cheapen it and they don't profane it; they just make it sound different. And cool.

    And lest ye think I'm a classical hater, I suggest you look back about forty 'jams or so ago when the "classical music recommendations" thread was raging and see how many posts I contributed to it. :)

    Kevin vs. Derek: Believe it or not, I did not know Kevin had left the band until I bought = ACoS,,, I really didn't mind (or notice much) because FII was not out = until much later and I was already pretty well settled with DT as my = favorite band. When I finally bought FII, (which cost me roughly $20.43 = here in Mexico) I must admit I was a *bit* disappointed because of the = new writing style... Why?: No orgasmic soloing or enthralling accompaniments like in Only a Matter = of Time, Take the Time, Learning to Live, Erotomania, etc. etc. No more Kevin Moore lyrics (probably my favorite). What happened with You Not Me? It's pop rock! I really didn't LOVE Derek's contributions in Trial of Tears, Lines in = the Sand and Burning My Soul. and Anna Lee (anally) will never be considered as emotional as I think = of Wait For Sleep or Space Thy Vest. I'm really sorry but that's just my opinion, flame me if you want but I = really admire Kevin and is one of my favorite musicians (at least better = than Derek, whom I STILL respect for being part of the band that created = my perfect music) ..which leads me to the topic

    Favorite songs: WDADU: Only a Matter of Time. This song totally, completely kicks some = very serious ass... I mean, just listen to the keyboard solo,, its = fucken' amazing... and the lyrics are *really* deep and artistic too, = it's actually one of those songs I can relate to and adapt to my life = soundtrack (y'know, some guy mentioned something like that a long time = ago). I don't mind Charlie at all y'know... (Seconds:Status Seeker, The Killing Hand) I&W: Take The Time! By far, my greatest song in the history of my = life... you can really feel the unity and musicianship of DT throughout = the whole piece. Catchy tune, great solos, nice chorus, excellent beat, = hey, even the lyrics I like... (close Seconds: Learning to Live, Surrounded, Under a Glass Moon) Awake: Erotomania. Simply marvelous... It's actually a shame there are = no vocals,, that's why I'd like to tie this with The Mirror, which intro = is a dick and its variations in singing style complement perfectly the = heavy guitar parts along with the keys. (Seconds: Space Thy Vest, 6:00, Lifting Shadows of a Dream) FII: New Millenium. Why? Damn, the counterparts (keys, chap stick) rule! = Who else but DT? (Seconds: Peruvian Skies, Hell's Kitchen, Take Away My Pain)

    and now, chicks into DT: Well, at first there was my sister. I had just bought I&W and I thought = I'd let her hear it... and she (liking alternative bands like Nirvana = and Garbage and stuff) inocently asked me 'Why haven't I heard them = before? You know, maybe if the singer guy sang a little less pitchy they = could be famous and appear on MTV' So I simply gave up... Then there was my girlfriend (now my ex) and SHE (liking poppy singers = like Mariah Carey and Celine Dion) simply blurted out 'Stop that noise! = It's too loud!' on loud songs and 'That's boring' on soft songs. So, I = let her have it her way... Finally there was my cousin. She knows NOTHING about music, and has all = sort of music for herself (stuff that's recommended to her) she = typically asked me 'How do you find out about all these weird bands?' so = one day she listened to DT in my car and asked me to make her a = compilation of 'good songs she might like' from my cd's (she specified I = include stuff from that band she heard in my car) so I went right ahead = and did that... only to make her one of the only chicks I know who digs = prog. Cool huh?

    and finally, MORE worthless comments: I was looking at a school textbook and read this: 'The ordeal of the = Cherokee Indians, who were forcibly moved from their homeland in the = 1830's is remembered as the Trail of Tears.' Any relation? You think?

She knows NOTHING about music, and has = all=20 sort of music for herself (stuff that's recommended to her) she = typically asked=20 me 'How do you find out about all these weird bands?' so one day she = listened to=20 DT in my car and asked me to make her a compilation of 'good songs she = might=20 like' from my cd's (she specified I include stuff from that band she = heard in my=20 car) so I went right ahead and did that... only to make her one of the = only=20 chicks I know who digs prog.
