Whoa! Well Derek, it seems like you are reading your digests, so,
let me say one little thing:

Why do you play your keyboard with a distortioned tone in the
instrumental part, before the solo, in Under a Glass Moon?
I think that if you play that part with a clean tone (like on
I&W), it would sound much cooler.....
            Just a thought........

Yes and no. After the first UK album, Eddie Jobson/John Wetton
decided to drop both Bruford and Allan Holsworth. Bozzio, from what I
know of it, was simply (at the time) a session drummer - that they took on
tour with them. I don't know offhand if Bozzio's doing the drums on the
new UK album, Legacy, but I'd be suprised if he was.

    ok....i got a question here.

i was looking on the music blvd. webpage the other day, and noted a listing
for the "hollow years" german single with certain bonus tracks. this one was
listed as having BMS (live) and killing hand (live). rather aroused at the
prospect, i ordered it, and was rather disappointed to get the "plain" version
    of the single.

so IS there a copy of HY with the two live tracks? please respond privately.
    thanks.

vernon reid tonight, and jones beach sunday. whoo-hoo!

Sorry if this is redundant, but CDnow lists both Age Of Impace and
Liquid Tension Experiment on their Top 100 sellers list. Good job!

I find I have mixed feelings about AOI. On one hand the musicianship
is brilliant (of course), but I don't feel that strongly for the style
of some of the material, the actual construction of the riffs and some
of the melodies. Plus, where the hell did they bury Terry Bozzio, and
why? The singing is great though, throughout IMO, but I feel some of
the soloing is a bit noodly... like the moody sound of the sequenced
opening (+ the rest) of Impact 2 particularly, and James Murphy's
    soloing.

Anyone have any details on whether he is on the Death record that is
going to be released in October. Or is it going to be Vinnie Moore as
    rumoured some years ago?

BTW, I'm planning visiting NY in two weeks time and might either stay
there for a week, or eventually travel to California/LA/SF. Therefore
I'm looking for concerts, places for shopping, and other cool places
to go + tips on cheap places to stay. My main focal point is NYC, so
anyone who want to help me out and point me to nice places, prog
record and instrument stores etc, I'll be very grateful. I'll try to
see DT somewhere, but I think it'll be hard to fit in with my plans.
What's the best and cheapest way to travel across the US? Take it to
private email so we won't bother the jam.

Derek, thank you so much for ending that really pointless debate. I think
it's really stupid when people try to downplay your abilities and character
while you are doing what they all want to be doing...playing music with the
best band in the world! Anyone who talks trash about a true musician is just
plain jealous, and they obviously haven't any other way of expressing their
    jealousy.

Damn straight I'd love to play for DT. Damn straight I'm jealous of his
situation. But. (hehehehe... he said "but") But Derek's downplaying the
whole "I'm playing for DT" himself. Read his post again. He's "living my

mention playing for DT, or else I would have thought he just like screwing

I mean, Jesus! Derek can play like a sonuvabitch. His work is great.
But man, what kind of post-sixties sexist drivel was he spewing, anyways?

Professor Korg dusts off his Ph.d. in forensic psychologly and thus spake...

Derek, it does appear that although you proclaim yourself to be
heterosexual, it appears that your indulgent proclomations of
heterosexuality concludes that you would like to sleep with Eckie. He is
tow-headed just as you claim to like and is everything you could ever hope
for. You're not happy with your current occupation as a keyboard player and
want to take up sculpting, whether that be with clay or human hair, and fly
down to Arizona and get some Eckie-lovin'. The fact that your name ends
with a K and Kevin Moore's begins with one displays your neverending feeling
of hopelessness in fulfilling his shoes and fear of coming up last. That
explains the name Nicky Lemons that you use as a false identity. It's a
facade you use to hide your fears as Kevin's name ends with an N and it's an
attempt to hide your self-imposed inferiority to him.

You don't fit in with the other members of Dream Theater, obviously as you
refer to yourself as "playing with" the band rather than "being in." Either
that or it rather confrims your homosexuality by inferring that you have a
secret desire to "play with" John Myung and the others. John Myung's
insecurity seemed to develop more after you'd joined the band. It is also
rumored that John is an intense homophobe and your presence repulses him.
Either that or you stole his woobie (his security blanket) thus redeeming
    you of any homosexual accusations.

Conclusive therapy required: At least 20 hours a week of watching Perfect
Strangers re-runs. Object of idolization should be Balki, a symbol of true
masculinity. Try to develop yourself into a being who shares his compassion
for his fellow man, his patiotism of the soul, and his love of sheep. After
that, marry Eckie and fulfill your dreams. Possibly change your legal name
to Neville or Norton as Nicky is a rather effeminate name symbolizing your
internal struggle with homosexuality. Most of all: Be proud of yourself!

    >Yesh Damon it is him...and Damn somebody put Damon in Digest mode? I love
    >your posts man but please......one word love:

    >Consolidate!

Actually, when I think about it, I could imagine you'd have a hard time
using cut and paste if you couldn't see what you were doing. :)

    >I didn't know that he's been the drummer ever since. When exactly did he
    >play live with Genesis?? After he left Yes and before he entered KC??

That was after Petey left the band, which means late 74 or early 75, I
think. After Red, in any case.

    Now here's a ramble:
You know, for a long time the only DT album I've listened to has been FII
(and a little Awake), and recently I went back and listened to WDADU and
I&W and some tapes, and I'm listening to the TDoE version of A Change of
Seasons, and I'm listening to Learning to Live, and it hits me, "Who the
hell is this keyboard player? He's incredible."

You know, I've been missing it with the later albums. I get used to DT
not having keys, and forget that they used to be one of the
    hyper-keyboard groups.

Most of the time I notice Derek is that irritating buzz he lays under
most everything the band plays. It drives me UP the WALL on the album
version of ACOS, and I try to imagine what it would sound like with a
nice string sound. It's that buzz-buzz-buzz you hear on You Not Me. Or
he holds down faux-Hammond chords in the background or plays some widdly
bit that gets lost in the production. It's all atmosphere (sometimes
well-done atmosphere but not nearly as cool as, say, Ten Seconds or David
Sylvian) and mostly solos so short as to make me angry (ACOS being a
prime example, part I of ToT being another).

It's not that he can't play. Listen to Willy Brown from the Platypus
album we're all waiting for (or should be). He freaking shreds on that.
He gets his own parts. There's a sense that everyone in the band is
equally involved. This is what DT used to sound like.

With Platypus, Derek seems to *fit in.* It sounds like it will be a
great album for Derek lovers. It's bluesy, as Ty Tabor tends to be, but
people have noticed that Derek sounds bluesy. Yes he does. As does
Lines in the Sand, a bit (is that just Doug, tho?), which Derek wrote
a lot of (and is my fave on FII). And even then, that Hammond doesn't
jump out and hit me in the face like it does on Willy Brown.

So here's what I'm guessing: Derek is a kickass player, but he's either
choosing, or allowing himself, to be in the background, rather than
interacting. Sort of like Trey Gunn on Thrak (though live he plays a lot
    of Fripp's leads).

BTW how do people get "jazz" out of Derek's playing? I don't hear any of
it. Heck, to me, I&W has always sounded more like jazz to me (band
trading fours--make that fives, sevens, seventeens--and soloing over
chord progressions). I miss that, but then I love jazz.

BTWTW I'm surprised at Myung on Platypus. Doesn't seem his style. Yet
I suppose maybe the man can play anything, cause he rocks on it. If
it weren't for the lack of Doug's thundering and scary bass tone, I'd
    think it was King's X.

looking for a really prog industrial band for years and almost think
the only way one will exist is if I learn to play keyboards).

    Derek (aka NckyLemons@aol.com) spoke out:

    >Hi, this is Derek

    >A lot of you have been trying to put me in catagorize >with no success so let me help you out.

    I have a category: Hedonist.

    > ...I'm living my dream on a daily basis meeting > beautiful women across the world....

Now that's a new thread! Rub it in now Derek. So where's the best hunting grounds? My guess is Europe...women always love foreigners. Now I know why DT is in Europe all the time.

As far as side projects go, I might recommend touring with Sabastian Bach. You should see the crowds when he plays! More chicks than an Alice Cooper show!

    I better stop now...

Well, it's happened. A member of our prestegious mailing list (hi Matt) has flamed a member of Dream Theater.

    Cool. =)

I'm actually not sure what to think about this. On the one hand, I think this list is at its best when all the fans communicate as if nobody in the band is listening. I doubt I'd stay subscribed to a list that was dedicated to continuously kissing band members' asses. On the other hand, it's just so cool when Mike or someone else chimes in with information or additional input on a current topic.

I've often wondered what would happen if a band member posted something here that was disagreeable with some list members (and I agree with many of Matt's points...Derek's "coming out" came across as rude, arrogant, and against many of the ideals that we would like to think a member of Dream Theater would aspire to, as presumptuous as that may be; like Matt, I too noticed how the womanizing seemed to come before the music, although the wording of the sentence may have been unintentional).

It's fairly obvious that in Mr. Portnoy we have someone who knows enough to stay above all of the irrelevent bickering (as interesting as it may be) about I&W vs FII, Kevin vs Derek, prog vs non-prog, James sucks vs James rules, etc etc ad nauseum, and not take any of our comments personally. As more and more band members gain internet access and start to check us out more seriously, I would hope that they would use Mike as an example and simply ignore all of the controversial topics that pop up here (again, unless they feel they have something interesting to add to the discussion, and don't mind getting down and dirty with us).

Now if somebody does decide to participate in a heated debate, as Derek apparently decided to do, then I would simply request that they take to the table with them a thick skin and a grain of salt, and not take anything too personally. Maybe I'm not giving the band members enough credit when it comes to experience participating in internet discussions, but it's fairly certain that neither John Petrucci nor James LaBrie will ever participate in this forum. They've both made comments to fans in the past about how it's hard to hang out here because people can be so rough.

Personally I think people should continue being rough if their opinion warrants it, but at the same time I'd love to have as many band members as possible participating here. I would hope the two are not mutually exclusive, but maybe that's naive.

I've rambled here, and I'm not really sure I got my point across (if I even had one), but I guess I'm just trying to tell Derek: you were being a dick, but please stay. 8^)

It seems that this list is growing up to include active band participation, and I'd be interested in peoples' thoughts about how the list should evolve as this becomes more common.
